Topic: How to value a 'free car'

Our hopeful entry is a 2001 Ford Escort.

It was sitting in my friends yard for a number of years.
It is SO UGLY that my friend's wife refused to let anyone have it if they were going to be driving it on the street.  ( She didn't want to be known as the one that gave someone such a ragged looking car! )

My 'regular' track car blew it's motor, so my friend gave me the Escort so I could still  play on the track. It's gutted but runs good. I've logged about 1200 track miles between TH, Laguna and Sears, as well as a couple autocrosses.

The only money I've put into the car are brakes related and cheap-o sway bar.

The car is unregistered with no plates. I have the title.
How do I proceed?
It really was free!!

Re: How to value a 'free car'

if it was free, it was free.  that's a value of $0 to start.  try to get some documentation confirming that fact.  if it looks as bad as you say, that helps.

BTW, good for you!

Re: How to value a 'free car'

Yes, it's dented *everywhere* and has a poor fitting replacement hood.

The front valence is all scratched up and is held with zip ties...

We want to paint it in Gulf livery and pretend we're in the '69 LeMans in a GT40.

Re: How to value a 'free car'

Was it a race car already when you "got it for free?" If not, we're going to have a lot of pointed questions for you if it's chock full of tasty suspension upgrades, etc. Bring all your receipts!

If it was a race car when you "got it for free," you're going to get sweated REAL GOOD in the BS Inspection. You might get zero laps, but we're mighty skeptical of ex-race-cars that come with The Ole Enraged Wife Story as an explanation for the zero on the price tag. Yes, we've seen that more than a few times.

Re: How to value a 'free car'

Never a race car. Just a DE car while I got my Porsche back in shape.
Just something to beat on without regard...

When I got it it hadn't run for about three years.
Stuck a battery in and that's it!

It has no suspension mods except the $50 junk yard rear sway bar.

We call it 'filthy'.
It's pretty well known in Nor-Cal.

I say run with it man.  Bring as much documentation as you can and then some.  And get your story straight!  Then you'll be fine.  Besides, nobody believes that car has a chance anyway.  wink

My wife is driving the DTM "Red Reck" at the Chin event this weekend at Watkins Glen, lol.  It's actually a great DE car and gets lots of inqueries (especially in full Lemons regallia).

When I was instructing at NJMP Thunderbolt in the wet, I had 2 Vette drivers in the advanced group come up to me and ask me what was in this thing as they couldn't get rid of me.  They weren't happy when I told them it was an E30 318 with a 4cyl, LOL!  I guess they had a hard time comprehending that 130hp is a lot easier to put down in the wet then 405hp.  lol

Re: How to value a 'free car'

Mebbe the penalty can be avoided if you leave the masking on for the race (front and rear windows excluded) wink

Naw, leave half the windshield taped up....they did this at a driving school I attended once. Taped off the windshield below eye level. Scary at first, but it helps train you to look up track.
