Is a free '97 Volvo 850 with 180k on the clock and a suspect head gasket believable to the Judges?

Depends on what you mean by "free." If we think we're talking to Bill Clinton when we hear your definition, we might be suspicious. That means you can't:

• Have one teammate give the car to another teammate
• Create a corporation to give the car to yourself
• Claim some byzantine insurance-buyback scheme that results in a free car

Yes, we've seen all three of those before, particularly the first one.

Also, a turbocharged 850 makes us more suspicious than a naturally aspirated 850.

Re: How to value a 'free car'

It's painfully N/A.
And it's been sitting under a pine tree in a family friend's back yard for the last 3 years - and looks the part.

Well, then it should be fine.

Since when does the car have to start out looking like the vehicle it is supposed to resemble? Since there are very few cars as short as Guido, I'd think that the way to go would be to take an existing small to midsize sedan and make the greenhouse taller. Chop off the trunk, rear quarters, etc. It'd be great!

Re: How to value a 'free car'

You do realize that many Lemons cars haven't even been around the block much less around the very track they're racing on, don't you?

Re: How to value a 'free car'

So because I have about 1400 track miles, means?

I got this free car as a back-up. I ended up driving it way more than I expected.

Re: How to value a 'free car'

It just means that you're not helping your case by showing it on track so much.  Our car for the Lamest Day had been around the block, once, prior to being pulled up to tech.  You have a well sorted car that's been on track many, many times, including the track the event is on.  In what way is it a crap can?

I'm not picking on you, just saying that might have something to do with being waitlisted.  The California races are very competitive so you have to stand out.

Re: How to value a 'free car'

The car is hardly well sorted.

Just about everyone that rides along is petrified.
They grab for something to hang on to that isn't there!

At this point, it doesn't really matter what happens.
I'm going to keep building the car as if we're 'in'.

What ever happens, happens.

In what way is it a crap can?

It was less then $500?
It is 100% Lemons legal... I never cheat.

Re: How to value a 'free car'

Yeah, but you didn't build it specifically for Lemons.   If you built it for Lemons first, then went and used it for your other track events the outlook might look brighter for you.

I don't doubt that it's a completely legal car, but seeing all the previous track time and the Gulf theme it doesn't grab me.  At this point in the game, I'd stop showing what the car has done, work on a different theme and try to amuse the powers that be.

[jerk mode on]Another option is to forget Lemons altogether and focus on getting my Porsche back up and running and do my 2-3 track days a month like I have been for the last 4 years... [/jerk mode off ]

May be you could prep your Porsche and run Lemons with it. It'll be loads more fun than that old free Ford race car that is not cheated up, just ask #44 Dragon Somethin' 944.

Re: How to value a 'free car'

Is there any way to put a poll up for predicting the Trekkor BS lap penalty count?

Options:

A. No BS laps - this guy is clean! FYI - I like crack
B. 10 - Trekkor did not realize the free sway bar had been autographed by Schumacher.
C. 100 - Judges felt some pity (and Trekkor brought the proper octane beverages).
D. Exactly the amount of laps he finishes - true justice is often sweet.
E. Who cares...the People's Curse crane is going to have a lot of blue and orange paint on it.

Aww... come on that thing doesn't look that bad to me. It'll pass for Lemons. Bolt some antlers on the roof... roller pink paint... I can see it! I would bet that Jay will except that one, no problem. Who wants to see another old free Ford anyway! That's your ticket to go Lemons right there. (just don't mention that you're a member of the Porshe Club)

Re: How to value a 'free car'

What does having your car on the track before a race have anything to do with getting in to Lemons?

Write:  We are 4 guys who are going to build a ferarri out of foam and bolt it on our existing VW bug.  We are then going to dress up like Tom Selleck and blast horrible 80's music through the pits, and hand out fake mustaches to the other teams. -- you're in

Write:  We got a car for $400 bucks and are going to paint it blue and orange.  --who cares, you're out

Nick and Jay don't care if your car is an award winning POS with 10,000 track miles, or something that is growing moss from the field you pulled it from.  It's all about the spectacle.
