Topic: Cheating bar raised at CMP

The Lemons Supreme Court just had a stroll around the pits at CMP, and the whole place reeks of CHEAT! We're gonna be handing out some laps today... in fact, we're considering giving everyone 5 penalty laps, just as a starting point.

Anybody that claims they're not cheating gets the Joe Wilson response: "YOU LIE!"

How about some details? Suspension? Engine? What did you find? Gotta figure out where to mount the NOS system...

+1 Yeah that would be fun.

All I have to say is THANK YOU for the 'roll through' ZERO lap reward during BS inspection.  Going into a ditch does have it's privledges.  smile

Re: Cheating bar raised at CMP

Details? OK -- how about the near-critical mass Ford Probe with the home made gas shocks. Jay and I were going over the car with a fine tooth comb; the front end was jacked up and we noticed a tire valve sticking out of the damper. Hmmmm.

"Oh that... yeah, we made our own gas shocks."

"Oh you did -- why'd you paint them black and try to hide them? The paint's still wet."

"Uh..."

"Also, when we asked you if we'd see anything suspicious if we jacked your heap off the ground, why didn't you mention the shocks?"

"Uh...."

That sort of cheatin'

"This is the scene where I get shot," Bronson said. "I have these little squibs that explode to make it look like bullets are hitting." "Fascinating," said Bergman. "I never knew how they did that." "You mean," asked Bronson, "you don't use machine guns in your movies?"

Re: Cheating bar raised at CMP

Yea there is a new base line. Do you have a Rotary engine that can walk away from any car down the striaght?  Or a Stroker 4 cyl that can take on a Turboed 6 Z car and win? I dont recall seeing any pentaly laps.
No problem, oh BTW both these cars finished 1 and 2....

So now we have something to Base the next event on.. Its going to be faster and fun.

Re: Cheating bar raised at CMP

I don't doubt that the McQueen VW has a stroker, but the car has been extensively lightened, well set up, and well-driven... maybe they get a pass?  (that said, they DID get my curse vote for cheating)  Something tells me that particular car might see a head removed during BS judging the next time we see it.  I'll chip in for the new head gasket.

I'm not sure about the RX7.  Given that I diced it up with that car on track and wasn't knocked out by the prowess of the driver at the time (not bad... but very choppy and uncertain of his lines), and I was able to pass it with a crappy 3000GT.  (I later let the RX back ahead of me and opted to follow him for a good long while just because I didn't want to drive as agressively as he was just to stay ahead of him)  That doesn't reek of cheater car to me.  As always, reliability, clean racing and good pit strategy won the race.

Face it, we're all cheatin' bastids to some degree... I challenge anyone in the top 20 to deny it.  (and even if you do, I certainly won't believe you!)  It's all in the degree of the cheating.

I got a kick out of the class-winning Saab that got towed home Saturday night (we followed it as we were going out for dinner) and apparently received turbocharged power for Sunday that it didn't have Saturday.  If that rumor is true... now THAT is cheating!

Much like the white RX-7 that finished 2nd (I think) in the first Lemons South race... back in the pits changing the grungy stock manifold and carb for trick performance parts immediately after BS judging.  THAT is cheating!

But, to compete in the race from start-to-finish in the same car that you somehow bluffed your way through tech with, without adding go-fast cheater parts (ahem, notice I didn't say anything about belts and hoses)... while you still might be cheating... is all part of the game.

Challenge accepted.

OK, Stafford had only 55 entries, so our 12th place would be more like 24th place with a pack of 110 cars, but we didn't cheat.

Car was $350. We bought used shocks and springs and rear sway for $150. We didn't use the sway bar, so that's less than $150. Unless you count scrap sheet metal for patching holes (old shelving), some scrap stock to put the rear bumper back on, oil/filter, or theme expenses (and I don't think anyone does), our car is absolutely under $500. 121hp, 5 penalties, and a couple of mechanical stops put us in 12th. Had we simply avoided the penalties, we would have easily been top 10.

You may have to cheat to win or be one of the top few cars, but I don't think you have to cheat to do pretty well.

Of course, if your car is cheater-fast, you can avoid penalties by just passing on the straight and staying out of fight in the turns. I guess that's what the curse is for.

That said, I don't care if you cheat. It's all for fun, and if sneaking cheater parts into your car is fun for you, go for it. If you get busted, then that's part of the fun too.

I Agree Loren Every one is playing the game. And the top 2 cars were very well driven.
When the Lap times are posted we can get a better idea of their stratigy - IE pits stope etc.

I  would like to see how long the Rx 7 was in the lead and by how much.

I'd call that a very accurate description.  I diced it up with them as well and after a few corners I pretty much knew what to expect.

Acutally, they had a blown clutch seal--- which if you know about SAABs with the engine sitting on top of the transmission, backwards... it's a mess.  Anyway, with the blown clutch seal, they were getting oil onto the flywheel/clutch--- and couldn't put down any power.  They left, went and pulled the clutch, found the blown out seal,  fixed the seal, then put it back together.

They had black flags like most other teams as well, for various things, etc.  They were surprised as anyone for winning their class.

Yeah, both those cars are SMOKING fast, and then get out of crush free. That said, both drove well, and were well prepped, so its kind of a mixed bag. I don't understand how they get through BS with the strength of both those motors though.

Re: Cheating bar raised at CMP

Our Escort isn't a cheater, now anyway.  Might be next year.  As far as the Probe goes, it is always good to know who your competition is:

We chatted with Bill Riley for a few minutes after we noticed the insane brakes they were running.

We also noticed the large number of teams with NASCAR connections.

Re: Cheating bar raised at CMP

Not whining, just getting some things out in the open.  Perhaps if people realize that, yes, other people do notice their OBVIOUS cheats, maybe they'll be less inclined to do it?

As for the suspiciously powerful cars... how do you propose they get caught in BS inspection?

And for those non-cheaters out there... are you sure you're accounting for everything?  Even the crap you have laying around the garage has SOME value.  Sure, most of us don't count a lot of stuff like that, but realistically... you should look at it as "I bought this car for $200, brought it home to an EMPTY garage, and had to buy EVERY part that I put on it".  I you honestly take that approach, I suspect that anyone who even FINISHES the race is cheating at least a little.

The Probe guys with the self-rebuilt shocks... in their mind, the Schrader valve and any other parts they may (or may not) have put into those shocks were "free" because they were available in a pile of parts in their race shop.  Is that REALLY any different than the home-builder putting a piece of scrap steel or a spare bolt that they happen to have in their garage on their car and omitting it from their budget?  Did you include all the zip-ties, wire, electrical connectors, electrical tape, cotter pins, gasket sealant and crap like that in your budget?

Good to hear that the Saab was (apparently) not actually cheating as rumored.  Wonder if the new clutch will be included in their budget next time out?  wink

Re: Cheating bar raised at CMP

Our car hasn't even been accepted and we're already 'cheaters'.

It kinda takes the fun out of it for me.
Car is 100% legit. We just want to show up and have good time.

Cheating is not my gig...

But were they REALLY that fast, or was that just your perception?  I can tell you that when I read the Jalop article about the top 5 cars Saturday night, I realized that I had diced it up with 4 of the 5 and PASSED each of those 4 in the "GT30", which is a stock 3000GT.  Never got into it with McQueen, that I remember.

Just because a car is "reasonably quick" and "handles adequately" and is "DRIVEN WELL" (that's the important part) doesn't automatically mean that it's a big fat cheater car.

You want a scary fast car?  If those guys in the Monte could figure out how to make their suspension let them carry some speed around a corner, it would be an unstoppable force.  I ran a 1:04.4 in the GT (on Saturday, would have likely been quicker on Sunday... if I had the chance!), and those guys were sprinting away from me in the straights.  Easily a 1:02 car if it would hold a corner.

Re: Cheating bar raised at CMP

this was our first Lemons and had a blast!  can't wait to do more.  hope they will accept us in the future.  I'm more surprised our car lasted the whole time!  I think our trans had no fluid at the end of the race, seriously.  we had a clean sat, and then sun 2 of our drivers punted 2 folks and got us some penalty time.  cost us some time.  We finished 13th in our clutch chattering, (smoking), dry trans, big time warped front brakes ~20 yr old POS Taurus SHO.  I think we broke a motor mount to.  she was still pulling strong to the checker though!

was impressed with the race pace/intensity, and drivers.  everybody for the most part minded their manors.  I did a 2.5 hr full fuel stint from 4:45-7:15 on sat, and never had contact the entire time.  i tried to give wavs to a lot of folks.

who cares who's cheatin.  just show up with a crap can and run it smile

Only if you let it. IMO, it's all in the attitude of having fun and not really caring too much. So what if you get BS laps? You weren't really planning on winning, were you? So long as you don't get crushed, you'll have lots of fun on the track. (Hopefully cars that get crushed are actual cheaters or actual terrible drivers.)

Re: Cheating bar raised at CMP

I thought we were on to something in our car being able to pass pretty much any car on track except the cheater cops 300hp 2000# Lincoln Mk8. On Saturday, we didn't have much trouble passing McQueen, but come saturday, they let that RCR Sponsored Red Bull F1 engine loose!! Holy freakin crap that car was stupid fast on sunday!!!  they were absent at awards though since Jeff Gordon needed his engine back.

Hell, we have $500 only in zip ties and duct tape in the car already!  (...and we aren't even counting the cheatin' parts yet!)  wink

Trekkor...in all seriousness, we aren't one of the cheaters.  There are some out there but it is fun when you take a legit $500 beater and you beat some of the cheaters!  YOU will have the most fun of your life out there!  Our car ran like crap for about 50% of the race and we still beat most of the cars we thought were cheatin' AND still had the time of our lives!
