Topic: Bush find 89 Fox Mustang

Just dragged an 89 GT out a Northern Ontario forest on Sat....if I remove it, it's free. Is this a sub-500$ car per the rules? Body is not bad but chassis is pretty rusted. Interior has a strange white mold everywhere...not very fragrant. Engine won't move with a flex handle on the crankshaft pulley, but I don't know if it's seized or just stuck....how about it Men In Black?  How do I post pics? I have some Web-ready GIFs of this gem...

Re: Bush find 89 Fox Mustang

You've posted a link to files on your hard drive.  Since we can't access your hard drive, that's a non-starter.

Upload them to a site like imageshack.us [choose the file, the press upload], then it'll give you the bulletin board codes needed to post them here.  They should look something like

Car to Pit telemetry (OBD2, GPS, and analog inputs) with little more than a phone, router, and laptop.  It's not MacGuyver, it's WifiLapper (forum | facebook)

Re: Bush find 89 Fox Mustang

Jim,  Good luck with your moldy pig. I raced one of those back in the old Escort Endurance series.  It was the worst understeering and worst oversteering (all in the same corner) car that I ever competed in.

The front end dives under braking. You've got to do some serious cheating to move the A-arm pivot points to eliminate the dive.  After you get it to keep the front bumber off the ground you then need to cheat with the rear trailing arms to keep the rear from wheel hopping under throttle.

Best way to drive it is to dirt track it and drive with the throttle right up until the front brakes melt then the run really starts!!

Lots of HP. not much handling, no brakes.

Good luck!!!!

Been there, done that.

Re: Bush find 89 Fox Mustang

So basically, this is a perfect Lemons racer?.....Actually, I'm considering it because cage kits are plentiful and cheap, as are parts.....Spud, I may have watched you in the Escort Series....did you do a round at Mosport? I certainly remember these doing well in the Firestone Firehawk series. I pulled the plugs and filled the cylinders with WD-40 then oil so we'll see in a week if it budges.....I'm guessing there's 300 pounds of weight that could come off with nothing more than a Crescent wrench.

Re: Bush find 89 Fox Mustang

Jim,

I ran Mosport in a grey / blue Mustang coupe. We ran at the same time as Saleen & Kaufman Racing Mustangs.   Took LOTS of cheating to try and stay up with the Camaro's.

I also did 24 Hours at Mostport with two bright yellow 2nd Generation Mazda RX-7's.

I'm guessing sometime around 1989 or 1990'ish.

Yup, I was there, on the hill at Turn Two. Nobody can drive turn two. I've seen Scheckter, M. Andretti, Hunt and from inside the car, me, screw up royally in that mother....must have been an experience in a Fox Mustang!

Re: Bush find 89 Fox Mustang

First off, you FAIL at the internets. Linking pics isn't rocket science and it pwnd you. I can't wait to see your race car!!!

Second, we're all on to your cheat.

Here's a plan guys. take my 89 GT DD and park it under the pine trees for a spell. Don't wash it for 3-4 months and occasionally throw some dirt on it. For good measure, we'll spray some water on the interior and motor, dust it with flour or cornstarch and snap some pics hoping to pull the woll over teh Judges eyes.

Bring a "Free" Fox 5.0 to a Lemons race and it's getting crushed after receiving 1200 lap penalty.

Good luck!! big_smile

Yeah the "internets" owned me....I guess 35 years of spinning wrenches left me a little behind....as far as "cheating" on the car, the rest of the pics are on Picasa (see above)...plenty of rust as well as cracked tire sidewalls, etc....since it hasn't been on the road for 8 or 9 years, I suppose a DMV check and the VIN should mean something to the judges too....wish you were there on Sat to help me winch it out of the dirt. Make it into a Lemons car? Maybe, but if I can't free up the engine or I find too much more chassis rust, this a parts car. I doubt I'll have much trouble proving this is a 500 buck car. The stupidity of hauling a POS Mustang out of the back of beyond to fight rust and age for Lemons?  That's another matter.....

Re: Bush find 89 Fox Mustang

Good job on hiding that Liberty prepped T5 in the pics.

Ever seen a People's Curse Crushing? Youtube that and picture this car in it.

Re: Bush find 89 Fox Mustang

Well, the pictures are about as clear as mud.  I can make out the odometer and 5.0 on the motor.  After that, they're kinda useless.

Our race car, which should have been a parts car, only needed a few not so swift blows with a hammer to shed a ton of weight due to rust.

Our parts parts car was even rustier and wouldn't roll.  First car I had to go back a second time to make a pick up.  When I tried to winch it onto the trailer, I started to pull the car apart.
