Topic: Any Lamest Day volunteers for BumperCam II installation?

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/jalopnik/2009/09/PillarCamMounted-800px.jpg

Remember the BumperCam I bolted onto the Mustard Yellow Volvo at Buttonwillow? Well, BumperCam II, which uses a reasonably modern Canon A460 with CHDK intervalometer firmware, went onto the C pillar of the Tunachuckers' Amazon at CMP and it worked great (examples below). It uses a sophisticated shock-enhancing mounting system ($1.99 L-bracket and sheetmetal screws), and now I've even got a 12V power adapter for the camera so I don't need to keep swapping batteries during pit stops.

So, who's willing to screw or bolt this thing onto their C pillar at Nelson Ledges?  I'll make sure you get copies of all the photos before I leave the track.

Re: Any Lamest Day volunteers for BumperCam II installation?

We've got a periscope on top of one of our cars that is about 3-4ft above the roof of the car, if you want an anti-bumper cam.  It's already rigged to have a camera screwed to it, too.

Car #571, it's a gray civic with black rectangles for 'vents'.

Car to Pit telemetry (OBD2, GPS, and analog inputs) with little more than a phone, router, and laptop.  It's not MacGuyver, it's WifiLapper (forum | facebook)

Re: Any Lamest Day volunteers for BumperCam II installation?

We'll do it.  If we can figure out what we did wrong with our 12V outlets, we should even be able to provide a power socket.

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

Re: Any Lamest Day volunteers for BumperCam II installation?

The power adapter for the camera has a lighter plug, but I'll probably just cut off the plug and wire it right into a 12V source in the car.

I'd love to have it on the Property Devaluation Mustang.  I've got a 12v distribution block just inside the passengers door.

Re: Any Lamest Day volunteers for BumperCam II installation?

I wonder if leaving the camera on the car after dark, with flash enabled, would be a blinding safety hazard...

Re: Any Lamest Day volunteers for BumperCam II installation?

As fun as the photos would be... you might be onto something there.  Blinding flash mid-turn while braking behind a camera-equipped car could be troublesome.

Do you think you could get reasonable photos without flash by mounting the camera on the front and relying on headlights?  Experimentation may be in order.

Re: Any Lamest Day volunteers for BumperCam II installation?

Headlighting ain't gonna work very well. At best, you'd wind up with a well-lit but slightly-blurred bumper. At worst, a giant, smeared blur.

I'm not sure how taking pics at night is gonna work out for me, if at all. I'll probably just drink heavily and sleep, because my lenses aren't fast enough. And I'm pretty sure that even in full manual mode, my little A530 rear-facing cam isn't going to be able to catch much of anything.
I should probably try to set it up on the back bumper of my truck for the ride up, just to see what it can do. Lots of zip ties will be necessary to ensure it doesn't come off en route to the track...

I understood what you were talking about.

"This is the scene where I get shot," Bronson said. "I have these little squibs that explode to make it look like bullets are hitting." "Fascinating," said Bergman. "I never knew how they did that." "You mean," asked Bronson, "you don't use machine guns in your movies?"

Oh, that would be awesome! And you would have about 500 photos of what you actually see at night while racing: totally nothing.

Re: Any Lamest Day volunteers for BumperCam II installation?

We tried taking pictures at night last time we took the car out to the track.  At 8pm when the sun was still partially up, maximum flash on our camera didn't reveal a thing.  We decided we'd need a large strobe light to properly illuminate the car and get a non-blurred picture.

We're totally in!  We have your 12 volt power and we'll raise you in race commentary from BumbleBee himself.  We're fast enough to pass some cars, and something tells me you'll see some smokey burnout pics.

No drinking while the race is going on... and that means 24 straight hours with no booze!
