Depends on what you're looking for...

Downtown Joliet has Harrah's Casino plus some local pubs/restaurants.  Several of them pretty classy.
Over by the Louis Joliet Mall (Route 30 and I-55) there are lots of chains - Outback, Lone Star, Texas Roadhouse, etc.
Over by Tinley Park and Orland Park you have similar chains.

I did find this special event in downtown Joliet:
FRIDAY, JUNE 8 / "NEW ORLEANS NORTH" in Downtown Joliet in front
of the Rialto / 5pm - 11:30pm . . .BEER TENTS, GREAT FOOD, LIVE BANDS. Must be 21 or over - $5 Cover charge

Sounds like a fun time...

My parents live in Shorewood, so I grew up around the area... so here's some places to check out.

If you're looking for really good mexican.... Try "The Front Street Cantina" in Plainfield. It's a little bit further from the track but worth it. It's a nicer place too, but you don't have to dress up. Polo and jeans or whatever.

If you're not from Illinois and have never had a good hot dog, you need to try out Portillos (Shorewood), Babe's Hot Dogs (Joliet), or Joe's Hot Dogs (Joliet). Lots of people prefer Portillos... it's a big chain now (although still family owned), they've got a ridiculous selection of other stuff. Personally, I like Babe's better.... Real Beef Hot Dogs, french fries are air cooked vs oil cooked. Joe's Hot Dogs has been around for ever. Everything is salted (so high blood pressure people beware), but if you order a large fry, it's cheap and they literally fill up a brown paper lunch bag with fries so you get a ton.

Portillos - Shorewood

Breakfast Joints...

Check out "The Crispy Waffle" in Shorewood (Off of IL-59 aka Route 59)

Old Fashioned Pancake House - Joliet
2022 West Jefferson Street

Fancier Places (Places you need a pair of slacks for, and a dress shirt)

Try Syl's in Rockdale.... (It's about the closet nice place to the track besides the casino). Steaks, Good wine, Italian, Their chicken is awesome, lots of good stuff.

829 Moen Avenue
Rockdale, IL 60436

Bars I would stay away from......

Sammy's in Joliet (By the Louis Joliet Mall) -- Most of the time a very young crowd, cops patrol that bar quite a bit, there's usually always a cover charge for something, drinks are over priced

City of Champions - STAY AWAY! This bar is NOTORIOUSLY known for fights, there's been stabbings (recently), this is known as the "UFC Bar" because the only people who go there are the one's ridiculously addicted to UFC in the bad way (as in... they think they're a UFC fighter and want to kick everyone's ass in the bar).

I'm sure there's others, but those are 2 I would primarily stay away from.... unless you feel like getting in trouble or going to jail.

Great weekend, actually I can even update my signature! Between two teams, I got into an accident (they did not come to our paddock so I guess it was my fault), had a tow truck ride twice, got a flat tire & lost power steering (to my great excitement. turned out you actually see the difference in how fast the engine revs with and without that accessory.)

It was a great weekend of racing. I'll send out multiple thanks in a post once Phil updates with a results thread.

Precisely.

Just glancing at the timing sheets, there are eight teams that disappeared before Sunday, not including anybody who didn't get to the green flag on Saturday. And the field wasn't that large.

Anyway, it was a great race, fraught with drama at the end with Clueless earning two black flags in 20 minutes with less than 90 minutes remaining and a three lap lead. They made a mandatory driver change and the time it took to do that put them down to Subliminal Racing by a minute. They worked it down to 30 seconds by the last lap, but Subliminal had it all together and took it.

And I know there will be a lot of attention on Marc and the Kinner MR2 (and deservedly so), but Class C was insanely deep. FIVE Class C cars finished in the Top 20 and they were all legitimate C entries (Metro, VW Squareback, Mercury Bobcat, TR7, and Monza). There were only four Class B cars in the Top 20.

Bravo, Class C cars!

Re: Showroom-Schlock Shootout 2012 - roll call!

We had our last hurrah in class C.  We were as good as we could ever be in the Metro as it sits this weekend.  The field overall was smaller and weaker than usual for an Autobahn race. Some heavy hitters broke early or later or both.  We ended up 8th overall, so pretty pleased to get our first top 10 in the Metro. It just so happened we also got 4th overall in our 325e, so pretty pleased about that too.

I'll say it in other threads too, but Bucksnort and Subliminal racing were generous in offering support and tools when needed. Thanks guys!!!  We want to be able to repay that and/or pay it forward to other teams.

It was great to talk to Keith of Byte Marks and Marc of world renowned radial-MR2 this weekend. As usual, the lemoneers are a great group.

Re: Showroom-Schlock Shootout 2012 - roll call!

First of all, hats off to Keith and the rest of the Byte Marks team.  Well done guys.  I didn't get the final results and don't know how you actually finished, but it looked like you guys really stepped your game up and were kicking class-B ass.

I didn't get a chance to roam through the pits and socialize with other teams.  I did make quick appearances at the Buck Snort and Skid Marks trailers and reminded myself why I use them as examples of how to run a team, even as the Skid Marks team looked equally as defeated as us with their (even less) under performing Dodge.

The Euro trash VW was a top notch team and they definitely had their shit together.  We kinda chuckled when we saw them unload a box that contained an entire "spare" engine.  Our laughter turned into tears when we later smoked our own engine.  Thanks again (Euro trash) for the generator Friday night.

Our other neighbors "Supra Troopers" were about as green as green could be, and I loved watching them.  It was a heart felt reminder of how we all got into this in the first place.  Just a bunch of buddies out having a good time... and completely in over their head.  smile

So anyway, we took a lot of heat from people about pulling out early on Saturday and not doing more to get ourselves back on the road.  We tried all night to repair the motor with a new rod bearing and polishing up the crank and rod journals, but the damage was too severe.  Besides, the spun rod bearing was the effect, not the cause... we still had a sudden major oil consumption issue that was TBD.  We did find a replacement junk yard engine that was half an hour away, but the cost was immediately out of budget (more than $500) and we were tired.  After getting our asses kicked so relentlessly in April, we really weren't in any mood to drop another ~$1000 for a ball-busting weekend that may or may not get us back on the track.

In the end, we decided to take the motor home and fix it "properly".  Spun rod bearings can be repaired for ~$100 all day long.  We wanted to race this motor again, not grenade it within the first hour of racing.

The #1 Neon seemed to be off the track regularly, but I think it finished mid-pack. Not sure if they mechanical issues or they were black flagged. The car finally called it quits in Turn 2 with about 10 minutes to go in the race, if I recall correctly.

My #76crx story... My stint. 90 degrees+and i was over tired.

-nausea for 2 hours on track
-steering wheel comes off. Got back on stayed on track. Literally a miracle.

-cool suit loose fitting drenches me. Out of water almost immediately leaving me cooking.

-lost drink straw. Fuck.

-again....nausea whole time.  Bad reaction to Gatorade.  Happened day before but wasnt driving.  Figured ate too much garbage food then and later realized it was Gatorade not sitting well. Completely queezy feeling.

Car starts starving in hard lefts.

Get call they are ready for me..... then i throw up in my moith. Pinch lips and swallow.  Happens 3 times in one lap. Then massive VOMs behind trailer wheb i finally get parked. Holy crap.

And i ran cars fastest time up to then.

Top10 finish in a B car that lost a valve and ran on 3 all day Saturday and got a semi-fresh 29 year old honda engine swapped in overnight.   Wow what a weekend.  Then i went and saw radiohead Sunday night.

Team B.L.U. here (Bomb cart #51). Big props to you guys and the team next to us (the team name escapes me now...) for helping us out over the weekend.  Amazing display of camaraderie.  Car ran perfectly Friday (most of it with the bomb attached) and took the green flag Saturday.  Had some early overheating issues during our first stint and a loose bomb bracket so we took her down and ran for a few more hours with no complaints.  Then we ran into a bunch of overheating problems the rest of the day that really hampered us.  Sunday we took the green flag and ran flawlessly for about 30-40 minutes and then after the first full course yellow the car overheated and spewed a bunch of oil and water over the engine bay (I now think this is what caused my snap oversteer almost spin at a very slow and calm corner under yellow...Apologies to whoever was behind me at the time!  I think it was the Yellow Submarine CRX).

We hit the pits and noticed a lot of clanking and rattling (more so than usual!) and after filling the radiator with water again, watched as the water pump gleefully pissed all over the grass.  With lots and lots of help from the aforementioned teams and a dizzying parts run, we returned with new water pump in hand and ready to be installed, but unfortunately she didn't want to last much longer on the track.  Various signs point to a blown head gasket.  Thankfully we were able to get on track for a couple laps and finish under the checkered flag, but the car died in the final procession and had to be towed off track.  We were informed by the safety truck team, however, that our misfortune allowed them to put in one more lap and beat the other safety truck crew!  Grats to you guys!  You can now buy us a round in October. :-)

Winning the Judge's Choice capped off a day of frustration with a long lasting moment of smiles and joy coupled with beer and dogs.  There were some great teams out there and some wonderful themes and many other deserving of the recognition. Being my first Lemons experience (I was mainly a gentleman driver, the rest of the team put in most all of the hard work and hours to get the car and theme ready) I was blown away by the overhanging spirit throughout the paddock.  Thank you for making this a memorable experience and restoring some of my faith in humanity.  Well, at least until Road America!  See you all then.
