Topic: Hat throwing into the ring

Howdy everyone. As you can see I've lurked long before opening my mouth, which is rare for me. The same lilwillie you see on Jalopnik or Hoonivrse or any other auto related website we may have bumped heads or into each other.

As of right now, we have four drivers and no freaking clue. Our mission is to make the Oct race at the Chicago Autobahn. One of us has extensive road racing experience. Two others have autocrossed for years and one can tie his shoes properly.

I've crewed for road race, circle, drag racing teams and normally am the guy doing the logistics and building/repairing for Shawn, our road racer. He has the money so hey, works for me.

What car are we bringing? We haven't got to that point yet but our choices are narrowed down to something under $500. We haven't gotten very far, once the 2010 schedule was released I was making mad dashes and calls to everyone to let them know we must race next year, at least once.

We have the facility to build a car, we have the funding for safety, we like cold Beer and really like watching cars race each other so I think that should make for a Lemons team.

Our theme, we did come up with that. Hey, important stuff first. we will be "Hunting for a Win" and our car will be Blaze Orange, should be some gun racks, bulls eyes and maybe a fake Whitetail carcass on the rear. We will be decked in our hunting gear and since it is going to be October it will keep us warm. Three of us Hunt Whitetail for filling the fridge. Hopefully the Judges like Venison steaks, we plan on bringing some.

So....anyone in the Western Dane County of Wisconsin, Mazomanie to be exact (we do have a nude beach if you need some sun) let me know if you'd like to try and reach glory with us. Or stop in and have a Cold beer. The fridge is always stocked.

It could be real.....it would be the right time of year for a Bow Kill. Might stink a little riding all the way down there though smile

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

Always good to hear about another team from Wisconsin!  Not sure how much help I can be (we have our own car to fix!)  but if nothing else we might be able to share tools and equipment after we get to the race.  Keep in touch eh

Team Sucker Punch: Winner Class B Doing Time at Joliet 2023 Autobahn ,Winner Org Choice award Were the Elite Meet to Cheat 2015
Chevy Camaro (Tiger striped #38)  (1989-2017 RIP old friend)
Chevy Corvette 1984......and still racing!

Excellent. Yes, always willing to help at the track with anything and everything. Glad to know there are many other Wisconsin teams around.

Road Kill escorting? Too much road killing on the track you have to haul around road kill?

Glad I could be of service smile

This oughta be a good start right here, too bad the seller's description is a bit scanty:

Punishment right there, but enticing.....

I do have a line on a Bandit Series Neon for $200.....I cringe at wondering what backyard welding went into the roll cage that was in the picture. A possible CRX torn all apart and the seller still wondering about his selling price.

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

I have relatives in N. IL so I read your post with some interest.  Up there you no doubt will have some rust buckets.

Advice would be get as late model of car as you can, maybe a wreck that has running chassis some thing that handled somewhat well to begin with, unless you guys like a big challenge.  The reason I said a late model is my first two races with a Lemons team we blew up our engine after completing a total combined 14 laps, and that REALLY sucks to watch others after buying all that stuff and making roll cage, etc.

Fuel Injection goes a long way, modern brakes (4 whl disk pref obviously), etc.

Get something out of ordinary if you can, easy for me to say now on a team with a @*$@ mustang!  LOL    I see lots of lemon potential cars, like wrecked gran prix, chevy caviliers, etc.  If RWD is a must-have, decide that early on in the car screening process - as the money guy.

AFter my experiences, obviously a running drivetrain is worth a lot of points, regardless how rough the rest of the car may look.  A car that was rear-ended can be made servicable with a fuel cell and a rear tail lamp, cut off stuff with a sawsall.  Around here flood damaged cars are good if you can trust the engine/trans.

Good luck

Thank you for the advice. Veteran racers always get my attention when they speak.

We are at a crossroads with our car choice. Our veteran driver, Shawn, who I have built car for and helped at the track prefers Honda. He has raced them for years and it very good with FWD. I and my brother prefer RWD since it is all we have owned and autocrossed. The driving styles of both are dramatically different but not something you cannot learn. Mike, our fourth driver, won't know the difference but since he drives a Jaaaaaag he will think he is experienced enough for whatever we get.

Rust is a horrible issue in these parts as many know. I have started calling local yards I buy from for wrecked or slightly damaged cars. So far no luck, the salvage car market is tough in this area. Most late model cars are picked apart quickly and end up crushed very fast.

My Brother, Troy, does work for the UW so he is watching their auction block closely for a high mileage auction car we can get cheap.

Personally, I do like a challenge. I've resurrected the dead many times and our families collection of classic cars is not without its stories. Our first team meeting will come up soon and the opening discussion is what we will drive.

Again, thanks for the advice. It is appreciated.

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

If you wanted to come south there are plenty of very clean cars as far as rust.

I know a little about rust, my '00 olds was from Ohio and I had some brake lines rust through and ps line rust through, and the car was clean!

Here's one I saw with potential, and there's an accord for 800 ish, etc etc.

I have contacted him, and have pictures. It is a strong possibility right now.

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

Remember its much easier to take a vehicle that engine runs and make it a race car than it is to take a junker and make it run.  But if your team is energized, mechanically gifted and have access to tools and time to work it, those folks are heros in Lemons, the ones that find a covair in a field rotting away and make it run....

Good advice.

We gained a possible 5th driver and thankfully he has a nice, 30 foot camper trailer for us to sleep in. One of the reasons I was so happy to have him join us smile He also likes Beer, which is a perquisite with this team.

We have a full shop to build it in, all the tools, welders and equipment to do it. I myself won't have a problem with the mechanical but I have teammates that aren't experienced wrenches. Shawn, our road racer has some, he was the owner of the IT and Spec Miata I worked on. So I have one wrench in the trench with me.

I am also a tad bit crazy, obsessed, odd about cars, I took our Edsel Restoration this far down then back to life.

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

The pair of Simca 1204's linked to me in this post turned out to be parts cars....

In reality the blue four door we looked it may live to drive again, but it hasn't moved in years and the engine is toast. The blue two door that came with it was wiped. The underside was rusted gone, the body panels had so much bondo I think the cars weight was doubled. The brakes where gone hadn't run in years but the owner said "It ran ok when it did run"

Parts for them.....non-existent it seems.

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

Howdy from a fellow Lemons newcomer. Our team is also in the rust belt -- specifically, right between the Mississippi and Rock rivers. We promise a POS rusted hulk!

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

Well, I am still looking for a "odd" car for Lemons but if all else fails, I scored a $400 90' E30 today that runs and drives.

So we got something, even if it is like a asshole (everyone has one).

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

My frustration has reached its peak...

I don't believe a I will be having a team for the Chicago race. Drivers not committing, people dropping out, wives not pleased.

It is down to my brother and I and then he went and decided to set his wedding for this October.

I will be attempting to make the race regardless, volunteer to be someones bitch in the pits, corner worker, whatever. I'd just like to enjoy the weekend someway.

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

Welcome to Lemons (the other side of the fun and running a team).

When our team started we had no less than 25 people who were interested...  That came down to ~10 for the first race.

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

Yep, been there, done that.  I tell all Lemons noobs that you will need to start with at least ten people to get four PAID drivers.  Everybody wants to race, but actually opening up the wallet and getting the spouse to agree to months of eating dinner alone are two very different things.

I must have asked everybody I know multiple times if they wanted to join us and all I could get was a bunch of "I'd love to, but..." answers.  Once you figure out a way to get through the first race and show pictures to your friends, it's easier to get comittments the next time around.

Try to buy an arrive and drive seat.  It's the easiest way to learn and is way cheaper than starting your own new team.

Re: Hat throwing into the ring

Thanks, to both of you.

I had a gut feeling it would end like this. Most that had said yes don't have the auto bug like I do and eat, sleep, breathe all things automotive.

Then of course the money involved started getting people nervous. I still have my E30 I scored for $400. I think it will be stored and slowly readied for....something. I've had a Madison area group that has been talking about racing. Trying to get in touch with them.

I have gotten messages about seats and offers of needing help. I am weighing my options now. I am going to the race. In what capacity I have yet to figure out. Thanks to everyone who has sent messages. I appreciate it. Once I decide what I am ready to do I'll get back to people.

If you are interested, take one of the people who offered a ride up to you.  You should be able to find a team that is close and needs someone.  It's a lot of fun.
