Topic: Secrets to a $10.00 paint job. Ohhhh Fancy Pants!

I priced out 20 rattle cans and even house paint... This is cheaper and faster.

If it takes you more than 30 minutes (including clean up) you did it wrong.

This is the key to a super high dollar jet black paint job.

I screwed up and bought a gallon of each. You only need 1qt of each. Mix 1qt of paint to .75qt mineral spirits.

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff42/flyhiflylo/2011%20Lemons%20build%20IROC%20MAIDEN/IMAG0124.jpg

Then pour in your habor frieght paint pot. sprayer

So I filled in the headlight holes, mounted the hood, put the required mesh over the T-Top openings, added front and rear tow hooks.

Then scrubbed the surface down with two scotchbrite pads. (more than two and your are doing it wrong)

That does look awesome.  Well done.

Is the paint oil, acrylic, or latex based?  If I'm not mistaken typical auto paint is acrylic.

If only we had that much space in NY!  Would that work with other colors or really only with black?

That looks like way too much effort. Rattle cans are where it's at.

Gloss white on the fenders, matte white on the hood and front bumper. red was already on the car. 3M di-noc on the headlight.

I guess if the base coat is the right shade (light color) it would be no problem.

Paint adds weight, and costs money.

Myself, i actually prefer our "we don't care what it looks like" theme, complete with greasy fingerprints, plasma cut overspray, and spilled whatever.

Function before form.

It adds to the hooptieness.    Not that we need any additional hooptieness in a Chevette, but we add it for everybody's entertainment.

Our car looks like crap in the pits.  but thats ok, because it's usually on the track.    going fairly slow, but still on the track.

Sure, that's a $10 paint job if you already own a compressor (what $200?) and the spay gun. Buy yourself the snap on plastic rattle can trigger and you can spray with the rattle can at least 75% as well as you could with the spray gun. Even better if you are lousy with the spray gun.

Rattle can or roller or air-powered fanciness, Rustoleum is the way to go. High quality, easy to find, & durable. Use the white Rustoleum for parking lot lines for extra sparkle.

My HVLP gun (much fancier than what he used) was only $15 at Harbor Freight. I bought it just for Rustoleum paint (because I refused to spray it out of my good gun) and it works amazing! And who doesnt have an air compressor?? Come on! :-P

Here's my Monte that I sprayed with Rustoleum. I was gonna roll it but it sounded messy and time consuming.Turned out pretty decent for what it cost me. I didnt even prime this thing. Just scuffed and sprayed!

A DAY TO DRY?!?!  I used acetone to thin the Rustoleum when I sprayed the Alfa GTV6 and the Opel Breadvan and it still took a week to cure.  But man is that stuff tough!  M&M's from tire rubs will buff right out..... well, if you're into that whole appearance thing.

Re: Secrets to a $10.00 paint job. Ohhhh Fancy Pants!

The Temco Ford Light Gray tractor paint I applied to the Merkurian Falcon with a $0.90 Harbor Freight (or was it Ocean State Job Lot?) brush STILL hasn't dried totally...nearly four months later!!! Find a thick looking spot and push with your finger, and it moves around...

I probably should've thinned it, but the destructions said not to, so I didn't.

And it's probably bad that when you google Temco paint, my blog post from the build is the first result.

Re: Secrets to a $10.00 paint job. Ohhhh Fancy Pants!

Yea it took that Monte almost a month to fully cure. And I used Acetone instead of mineral spirits too, hoping for a shorter drying time.
