Topic: Cage Question

I've got a question about the diagonal on the cage. Our car came with a horizontal bar on the rear of the cage. Can we run a two piece diagonal, or do we need to cut the horizontal bar out?

If you really want to know about roll cages you should read this SAE paper. It's a decade old but the engineering is still valid.

Re: Cage Question

We left the horizontal and installed a diagonal in 2 pieces.   Tech didn't say anything about it. <shrugs>

I pulled a tape from corner to corner and made sure my 2 pieces were exactly on that straight tape when welding, so if there was load on the diagonal, it would not be as inclined to flex off at some angle

Re: Cage Question

Our diagonal is a tiny bit offset at the horizontal bar (maybe 1/4"). Jay has seen it and said it was OK. It has passed tech twice. I think they prefer the diagonal to be one piece, but they don't require it.

Re: Cage Question

congrats; I think i now need a tetanus shot just looking at the inside of your car :shudder:

on the subject of the Diagonal, a 2-piece is fine as long as it forms one continuous line.

Re: Cage Question

For now, the diagonal can be two pieces.  Nick posted about it somewhere on this forum.

For anyone building a new cage, use a one piece diagonal as a defense against future rule changes.

Re: Cage Question

Yeah, an "interrupted" diagonal is fine, but as mentioned the two pieces should form a straight line. In your case, I'd advise a general rust cleanup. Don't worry about your safety equipment looking pretty--we want your car to look like 500 bucks, but the safety stuff should be nice and neat.

Next time someone tries to sell you a Florida car think about our Camaro.

Re: Cage Question

You win the rust prize. Our rust bucket was bad but this is great! Be careful welding anything on this car. On ours, every time our guys hit it with a welder it blew a chunk of metal off the opposite side of the surface.
