Re: What are you listening to?

My iRandom sequence often mimics Ronman's. My "office" is staffed by nearly 100% women (yes, let me tell you how much suck that entails :)and a dozen pairs of plucked eyebrows used to raise at the oh-so-common sequence of Erasure to Dwight Yoakum to Mos Def to Little River Band to Rilo Kiley to KMFDM to...etc. Now I just let them choose the first song and just let it ride...until someone has another request. Patients seem to dig it, too. Of course, I try to have a quick finger on the Sade mix if things actually quiet down for a minute.

For roughly 80% of my music-listening life I will have one of the following artists stimulating my stapes:

Neko Case
Oingo Boingo
kd lang
The Mavericks
Yes
Beastie Boys
N.E.R.D
The Boss
Dwight
EBTG
Elle Fitzgerald
Bebel Gilberto
George Strait
Jesus and Mary Chain
Ice Cube
Thievery Corporation
REM
Hank Williams (Sr)
Swing Out Sister
Mocean Worker/Ursula 1000/pizzicato 5
Smithereens
Federico Abuele
whatever is streaming on KROQ2

And, of course, Jimmy Buffett.

At this very moment: From a Distance.

Yep, Bette freaking Midler. Party on, Garth.

Oh yeah, FUCK SPRINGSTEEN. I swear I'd rather listen to dubstep while getting my teeth pulled than listen to his crap, which a lawyer friend of mine so succintly summarized thusly:

wink

I freaking LOVE the Mavericks, though. Raul Malo is seriously underappreciated as a vocalist.

Re: What are you listening to?

Yes yes. "So Long I'm Gone" and "Tell me Who" are on the rotation, too.

Dwight's version of The Blasters' "Long White Cadillac" always gets me, every time I play it. Anderson's guitar at the beginning is just spot-on.

"This Broken Heart" really shows his range.

The fact that they were a pretty successful country band that had its roots in that C&W stronghold of Miami just makes them that much cooler to me.

Okay. Thread hijack completed. Sorry.

Re: What are you listening to?

Killswitch Engage. Not too crazy about it though. The kids are all into Skrillix right now, and I saw that Korn has a collaboration with them. Might have to check that out.

Re: What are you listening to?

My random shuffle pulled up "Can't Stop the Rain" by Los Lobos, followed by the "Adversity" chapter from Garrison Keillor's "Never Better".

I wonder what it will come up with next.

Re: What are you listening to?

Oddly enough, I find myself lately listening equally to sludgy prog metal and droning shoegaze stuff

Sludgy prog (Zebulon Pike)

Droning shoegaze (Bedhead)

I was born about 15 years too late; all my favorite bands peaked in the mid-to-late '90s.

Last year, three of the bands that were favorites of mine when I was a college radio DJ had documentaries made about them. Tribe, Fishbone and Thelonious Monster. THAT will make you feel old.
That and teaching radio at the same station to kids that weren't even born yet when you started as a DJ at said college radio station.
One of my students was conceived at a Dinosaur Jr. (Opening act: Nirvana) concert I was at. Yikes.

Yep, that makes me feel old.  But having an 8 year old that listens to and enjoys much of the same music makes me feel better.  Has no interest in the verbal diarrhea that passes for music these days.

You are correct sir.  Ever since it made it back into rotation, I've listened to it probably 30 times in the last couple of weeks.

Awesome cover of Talking Heads' "This Must be the Place" done in the style of American Psycho

Putting this up because Mavericks.

These guys are pretty cool.

Between Dave's IAMDYNAMITE and Parkwod's Old Man Markley recommendations, I would call this a sonically satisfying day. Thanks, guys.

Old Man Markley are currently on tour opening for Drop Kick Murpys, not sure exactly where they are at the moment. Did I mention that they were nice enough to lend me their truck as our tow vehicle for several races last year?

I have a YouTube playlist of... "special" music videos that I listen to sometimes:

In a totally different vein, Johnny Cash's cover of Trent Reznor's "Hurt" is a great song and a better video:

Re: What are you listening to?

I listen to classical, but it's kind of limited to what I've performed... probably why the only opera I like is The Marriage of Figaro.

Don't like rap or country; listen to classic rock, art rock, world music and little oddities like the Battlestar Galactica Orchestra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxUk-37h … 8C05DAC512 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-tUbTU0jIA

and themes from Game of Thrones, Vikings, etc..
