Re: What is the oldest car entered at a Lemons race

So, if I can pull it off the '54 Metropolitan would be older?

Or this one! Yes, Corvair fans, you are represented by two Lemons race teams.

Yes, and it's also older than any of the vehicles that we know to be in the works right now.

A Metropolitan would go pretty good with a Volvo B23. Though I think you should keep it British and drop in a Triumph Slant Four.

Only if it is the 16v Dolomite Sprint version... I'll start looking.

Re: What is the oldest car entered at a Lemons race

We were the oldest at '62 until the caddy came along and beat us by a year. At least we can say we were leading in SOMETHING for a while... smile

Re: What is the oldest car entered at a Lemons race

I was all set to run this 1962 Studebaker Lark VIII for our first race last spring. It even ran, original engine and everything, 3 on the tree, the works. I think the doors each weighed something close to 500 pounds and the entire body was made of .125 thickness steel. It was going to happen until the seller found out what I was going to do to one of his precious rusting hulks and refused to sell it to me. But it would have been awesome and it sure wouldn't have gotten cleaned up more than to put the required numbers on it. I told the guys that we could probably even hot rod it and tube frame it from shock tower to shock tower all the way around and still make it through tech, but they were a bunch of nattering nancies, so we got the MR2 instead. We coulda been contenders!

Damn, that dude has alot of Larks.  I've got a 63 here...well till tomorrow when I take it to its new home.

They are lighter than they seem and take a SBC with ease.

We'll be bringing a 1958 to a Lemons soon but it sounds like someone's already trying to outdo that with the metropolitan.

Re: What is the oldest car entered at a Lemons race

Yeah, and there were a couple more around the corner of the barn, plus a couple of trucks. And he had a '49(?) Chevy cargo truck that I was trying to work him out of to refurb and use as transport for the race car. But once he found out what we were going to do to the Lark, it was "no sale." Something about desecrating sacred Studes, these are rare, yada yada yada. Never mind the fact that he has like a dozen Studebaker engines and transmissions in various states of dissassembly inside the barn. Dude has an acquisition habit but can't get to the point of getting any of them to even run, let alone restoring any of them.

There was so much room in that engine bay that we could have fit a freaking V12 in it if we'd wanted to. But the SBC was a candidate too. Oh well, maybe some other time...

Re: What is the oldest car entered at a Lemons race

I still maintain that Kaiser is far too straight and clean for Lemons. My Caddy wasn't clean at all, and I caught grief just for building it. I told everyone it would be fine, and I was gonna tag and drive it afterwards. Yeah, nice idea, but an inattentive driver and a tire wall changed my plans. Don't count on it on still being straight and driving it on the street after a race, like I did.

We won't hold the oldest record for long. I just wanna see Jim run the Wartburg before we bring out the Prefect, so he can have the record for a minute.

I say go for it, Serj!  Even if it gets biffed on track that would be better than sitting in that guy's backyard for all eternity.  Hell, it's probably better than driving to Sonic once a week with a time-out kid riding shotgun.

Re: What is the oldest car entered at a Lemons race

I picked up the Metropolitan today...    its pretty sad, and therefore a perfect candidate for a Lemons car.      It doesn't have a hood, other than that its complete, I even got an extra top and engine.

I hope to have it ready for Sears Pointless in March... We'll see.     This one will be my car, not a car I help others build, so I'll be recruiting team members as I see fit...  stay tuned.

I know where I can grab a 48 studebaker dirt cheap if running the oldest was really something I craved smile

hahaha, okay, you'd win, and I think you'd win Organizer's choice just for showing up if you did that one. I could totally see a Mobster theme going down. Nickname it "UnSmooth Crimial" ? or maybe "Keystone Coppers"

Yeah, Stude guys can be rather protective of their flocks.  I have weaseled my way into the local stude club as the resident "young kid" (Im almost 40)

Send someone else out to talk to him and pretend you love and appreciate his cars like no other.  What you do once they are in your posession is an whole other story.

You dont happen to know or wish to share the seller's name do you?  Just wondering if I know him from the National club or not.

Too bad you weren't closer, my 63 sold for a very Lemons friendly price complete with the V8 adapters.  Although it takes considerable money and/or effort to get anything resembling real brakes under them.

Re: What is the oldest car entered at a Lemons race

If you can find a '66 I think they came with SBC engines, 283's as I recall. Built in Hamilton, Ontario after South Bend closed, but you Stude fanatics know the real story...

Quite correct, at the end of the run they switched to chevy motors rather than spend development money on an updated motor.

However the frames stayed the same from 1951 to the end of the run so a set of 66 motor mounts will let you drop a SBC in any Stude.  Or you can get front mount engine cradle (was a 50s/60s hot rod part that bolts to the front of a SBC and is now being reproduced) that particular setup lines up with the earlier stude motor mounts fairly well.

Im only a mild Stude geek, this is my "good" stude
