Topic: Phoenix Firebird Event

I am looking forward to running the Phoenix race in January, but am interested in finding out what treack we will be using, and if we will need lights for night running.

Does anyone have the info?

Thanks,
Mike

Ya I just saw that. Crazy!! Hopefully some more show up, maybe everyone is just scared because they know the Z's will dominate this race?

heh, I raced with almost 50 cars on a 1/8th mile track (anyone remember FlatRock 07?)

that was before door bars and tail lights were mandated too. You felt like a goddamn hero if you FINISHED that event.

Bah! You guys were racing under super-safe, nanny-state conditions compared to the very first Altamont Lemons race. Why, in that race you could use a rubber glove ziptied over your crash-damaged fuel filler pipe to keep gas from leaking! Naturally, drivers didn't have to wear fireproof gear.

Re: Phoenix Firebird Event

The second Altamont race was pretty hairball also. The 'slalom in reverse while a bunch of people are standing around for points' was a good one...

There was so much gas leaking from one of the Pintos that I had to turn the wipers on and stay on the inside line so as not to spin on the constant spillage.

Plenty of body contact and cages that were pretty rudimentary.

TWO rollover and continues; the ZZ Uber gti and an Integra.

Flaming arse driving, the super-slideways Camaro (People's Curse!) and the insanity that was Altamont.

Re: Phoenix Firebird Event

hehe, basically any pre-Mad Max Altamont (oct 07?) race on a circle track has made every race thereafter in Lemons look like a kitten in a freebie box in comparison. great stories. In many ways I'm glad i was so lucky to be in on one. In other ways, it's practically a miracle i wasn't in a wheelchair...while on fire, after one of those races.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. We're glad we did that; we're even gladder that we're not doing it anymore.

Re: Phoenix Firebird Event

2008 Altamont was pretty much the end of the school of "hard knocks". Since then each race we have been in has gotten better and better. Now the drivers even wave at you as you go by, without the usual fender kiss to let you know which finger they were waving.

Re: Phoenix Firebird Event

Detroit '07 was brutal. The tiny track didn't help, but I still remember the amazing ring of cast-off parts surrounding the track like a soap scum ring around a bathtub.

By the end of the race it looked like you could build a car from crash parts out there.

Our faithful Cavalier got rear ended by a Caprice and folded up at the C pillar (again) That was the second trip to the frame rack; by the end there wasn't anything but rust and filler plates holding the back of the car on...

Lurching back towards the subject, Phoenix looks like a fun layout- actually a bit in the short track style of Altamont, but with a real straight. Can't wait to hear the stories braking for Turn 5, looks like more than a 90* corner...

Re: Phoenix Firebird Event

I can't imagine any Lemons race coming close to the carnage of the "Demolition Derby Lemons" race of October 2007. Bumpers all over the infield, every single RX-7 knocked out with broken control arms, and a chorus of Sawzalls and sledgehammers all night long. That damn hearse probably took out 15 cars all by itself. Know why Jay finally outlawed nerf bars and Mad Max-grade wheel cages? Altamont.

The races are much more fun now, in my opinion, but Altamont veterans should feel proud that they were there. How about an Altamont Vet patch?

Re: Phoenix Firebird Event

Oh yes please, we did all the post-'06 Altamonts and have the embedded Central Valley dust to show for it. Lemons was finding its way, and I'm proud to have been there.

I'm trying to talk Jay into going for this design for the Altamont Veteran patch (a patch showing Sonny Barger holding a gun to Keith Richards' head was deemed inappropriate).
