Do you have any kind of a Kafer bar arrangement?

Yeah, we have the frame horns tied into the rear shock towers with some square tubing. We don't have a bar going across between the shock towers, but I suppose we could add one.

It takes some of the strain off the trans since the motor is hanging from it.  It may be one of the things that prolonged our life.

You raise a good point. Maybe we should fab up some motor mounts for the Subie motor!

And solid mounts for the trans.  Although those thing usually just help save the CV joints not so much the trans but limiting all the strain and motion probably couldn't hurt.

We have polyurethane mounts.

Re: Total and utter domination, coming to a racetrack near you in 2014

Not saying they helped or not but we ran full solid mounts and a kafer bar that tied the shock towers together then from the bar to the frame horns, if you are killing transmissions it's worth a shot.

We didnt do a mount for the motor itself but it might not be a bad idea.

Re: Total and utter domination, coming to a racetrack near you in 2014

If you're feeling really froggy, go with a '69-76 big block Eldorado 500 or 472 with the FWD engine/transmission mounted under the front of the 911, but pushing the other direction so it's rear engine/ rear-wheel drive. 911s always looked like they were going the wrong way - now's your chance to fix it. If you decide against the big motor, go with one of those puny Northstars.

Re: Total and utter domination, coming to a racetrack near you in 2014

Eldorado engine/trans in the front! The world needs a FWD 911 with 98/2 weight distribution.

Re: Total and utter domination, coming to a racetrack near you in 2014

As opposed to stock when they were 2/98.  The average driver at least wont spin it out as much....Might push a smidge. Run it! Put 2 911 motors in. One in each end! Added bonus: No radiators to fight with where to put.

600+ degree exhaust exiting towards the driver's elbow? As much as I like the turbine idea, I think the execution puts this in the category of "just because it can be done doesn't make it a good idea".

Type 4 swap that, yo. Type. 4.

That's just too straightforward. I mean, Porsche 912E...

Shhhhh. Let us not speak of the 912E.

Wow. Dare I ask what motor was hooked up to this?

Also, I'm guessing no amount of improved internals would've saved the FRICKEN CASE FROM CRACKING OPEN, huh...

It's a bored & stroked type 1style VW engine that's been punched out to 1955cc. I built it to have enormous port velocity and lots of bottom end torque.

There's a company making gussets for the transmission case that is supposed to help keep this from happening, but the cases are a magnesium alloy, so it's fun to weld.

Magnesium welds like aluminum, the two problems are that castings are inevitably filthy(hello grinder!) and porous and the most common magnesium filler metal is about $90/lb.  I get dealer pricing, 3lbs for $220, lucky me lol

But cheaper than being all assploded, I guess.  S/F....Ken M

Those are gear reduction boxes.  They came on all the swing axle buses.  My guess is so they could use the same trans as the beetle, not to raise it like the 4x4 guys do.  Ya gotta do what ya gotta do to get a bus moving with 36hp.
