Topic: full 24 hour race

I know this came up when the 2010 schedule came out, but I never saw an answer. Since Nelson Ledges was not included will there be another 24 hour race east of the Mississippi? Are there any tracks that would get away with it? I know Summit Point does night training sessions for law enforcment agencies but that might get a special pass because of the participants.

Re: full 24 hour race

There is the 25 Hour race at Thunderhill this weekend.
It's doable there.

It's more than a year away, but the Dec 30-31 24 Horas de Cuba del Norte at Palm Beach Int'l Raceway looks to be a true 24.

UsedCarRacing is reported to be running a revival of the NL race but their website hasn't been updated lately, so I'd say that one's up in the air. But I'd love to run NL again and maybe even finish the race smile

I have been working on my wife about this race. Her birthday is on Jan. 1 so she seems to want to schedule the whole weekend. She seems to be softening though it may require a week at Disney.

Re: full 24 hour race

Not much east of the Mississippi. No 24 hour races either...

I kid, I kid.

Reno (May 3-4) is scheduled to be a true 24.  However, there is unsubstantiated evidence that the track may be shutting down, so there is a cloud on the horizon for the race entirely.

but you seem like a risk taker to me, otherwise we wouldn't even be talking about Reno.  Therefore, based on the shaky possibility that a true 24 will take place in northern Nevada, coupled with your inherent hatred of both humidity and trees, you should probably uproot your family now and begin the move to the area.  It will be quite an adventure for both you and your loved ones and need not even involve the mention of your true motives for upwards of 2 months!

We're already planning on attending that Chump race.  Plus it would be insanely miserable for my girlfriend and I to be on Miami beach on New Year's Eve.  Sounds awful compared to being here in frigid PA.  tongue

Yeah that would be fun especially if we don't give everybody a 12 hour head start.

Re: full 24 hour race

so anyone going to nl in the spring?

Re: full 24 hour race

We would love to, but it's just too early in the year for us.  Due to Michigan winter storage issues, our car is trapped until April and then we need to hit a track day or two before racing it to fix a bad miss we picked up at the Lamest Day.  If all goes well in the April race for Usedcar, we will race the Labor Day NL Usedcar race.  It's too bad that Lemons couldn't work something out for NL in 2010, but I'm glad to see Usedcar putting on its own race(s).

Moroso Fl can do a 24 hour, but they charge 2k an hour to keep the track open in the dark..  So its not cost effective . I dont think it will fit into a Lemons type race.  RE budget.

There is the Chump event at Sebring that will be 11.5 hours.  Running to dusk. So it will be a race requiring lights.

We have signed up for the Palm beach event and will be bringing out our new car.
I think Palm Beach is the new name for Moroso track?

Dec is still in the 60s here in FL so the weather would be perfect.

Re: full 24 hour race

Ever consider doing one in TX or surrounding states?  I think it would be well received down here.  I know our team would abs. love doing one.  Just not interesting in a crazy long tow to do a 24 with the likelyhood of breaking down.

Re: full 24 hour race

Funny enough, I have zero interest in running a 24 hour race.  Personally I love the 2 day format that Lemons runs.   Tech on Friday, party that night, race on Saturday, party that night, race on Sunday, go home.   A perfect weekend.

the biggest drawback to a full 24 hour race as i see it, is no cold adult beverage and a Cuban as I traditionally enjoy once i'm done with my stint.  so yes i see your point bro.

i'll let you know how i feel about it after the Chump event at VIR.  that is if they pull enough entrants to run a full 24.

Re: full 24 hour race

24 hour races are different.  The focus on running non-stop makes it really hard to enjoy the shenanigans that are the Lemons trademark.

Re: full 24 hour race

I agree there is less partys and fun. But I have yet to run a true 24 hour. I think it allows a slower but more dependable car to win. Since there is no stopping at night to bleed brakes or swap tires.  Or having to do fast pit stops to change tires  etc.

Its just something I have to try.  Then decide if it worth it.

You should definitely try it once.

"This is the scene where I get shot," Bronson said. "I have these little squibs that explode to make it look like bullets are hitting." "Fascinating," said Bergman. "I never knew how they did that." "You mean," asked Bronson, "you don't use machine guns in your movies?"

Re: full 24 hour race

The 24 hour Lamest Day race was a real hoot.  From 8am Saturday morning until 1am Monday after I got home and unloaded everything, I got zero sleep.  Add that to the 3-4 hours of sleep each night for a week leading up to the race while trying to finish building the car and I was completely exhausted.  I was WIDE awake all the way through without even feeling tired...  until I had to drive the rig home.  The adrenaline wore off and my body shut down.  Luckily, I had a bag of cookies in the truck, so I kept myself on a sugar high for 5 hours.

The 24 hour format makes for a different strategy.  You can't limp the car until the break and then do repairs.  All fixes are costly.  Even prepping the car is different.  Adding lights doesn't seem like a big deal, but to get enough lighting requires a large draw on the alternator.  In the case of our 35 year old Z, we only had a 50amp alternator (when new) and we had no idea if it would keep working with a large draw.  Add wipers and the defroster needs and it was nearly maxed out.  It did eat a few belts for some reason, but it stayed alive throughout the race.

Looking back on it, we probably should have run a two day race first so we'd have time for repairs and wouldn't have to wire the lights, but it was fantastic fun.  I'd love to see more 24 hour races on the schedule.
