The Roadrace Jones boys just acquired another $500 '92 se-r.  We even have a name for it...The Red Barren....it's barren of tlc, good paint, good motor, good interior and good mechanics to work on it.  The Joneses will have to do.  It does have some real classy chrome fender eyebrows though.   Think we should leave the brows?  We'll start stripping it out next week.

You are obviously a Ford guy. After 1957 all the big Chevys had coils on all 4 corners, except the 1971-76 wagons. I just replaced the 60 year old springs in the back with Moog springs intended for the 9 passenger wagon, and it raised the back end up nearly 4 inches. I'm going to let it sit for 2 weeks, then start cutting. I think 1/2 a coil will do it.

That's a cool look, but my bikes stay on pavement, so it would just be a waste for me to build one like that.

Yamaha has stock wheels. Actually the Yamaha has a cool story. It was first released as a TX500, which was one of the first mass produced bikes with 4 valves per cylinder. However it suffered from head gasket and overheating issues that would often crack the heads. Yamaha fixed the issue and started selling it as an XS500 to try and get away from the bad reputation, but it didn't work. As a result the XS500 sold poorly despite being a fairly advanced bike for it's day. Makes my life fun trying to find parts.

The yamaha is going to stay about how it is. It will get new electronics since the stock charging system is tired, and I'll clean it up a bit, but I like it how it is.

Both KZ400s have right around 5000 original miles. The red one will stay stock and my brother will ride it during the warm months at school. The blue one I have is in poor shape, so it's getting a full overhaul and will be moderately modded with cafe influence. I love the KZ400s. They weigh nothing, and are great to chuck around back roads.

Yeah, all my bikes stayed on the pavement too, but when I realized the safety gear to go road racing would cost as much as any of the bikes I had at the time, I learned to ride off road. After years of riding as a messenger in L.A. (after a year as a bicycle messenger in Boston), there was no real challenge in street riding anymore at the speeds I wanted to be going on the street. But it is amazing how much fun 20-40hp can be in the dirt when you are sliding everywhere. And so my most dirt worthy bike became my entry into the Elsinore Grand Prix, though folks still give me the look they gave me the looks now reserved for Lemons racers. Vintage dirt bike racing is abotu the closest thing to Lemons on 2 wheels.

Re: What the helll are you building?

Wow, as I sit here, my back still a bit achy and stiff from surgery 7 weeks ago, I think of my '71 Bultaco 360. Its patiently awaiting me in the shed. Can't wait to see the look in docs eyes when I ask when I can go ride it... That bike still screws me up every time I (infrequently) ride it. Its old enough to have the shifter and brake levers swapped side to side... but  ya get used to it.. It rides like a old lumber-wagon. There's got to be some ways to make those old bikes a bit smoother. I hadn't even looked yet.....perhaps I will..

About the best you can do is call Works performance and have a pair of shocks made for you. Then hit the gym and build as much muscle as possible to protect the more fragile bits, like you spine. You think a Bultaco rides like a truck, have you ever ridden a big Husky? The only way to ride my 71 CR400 is to throw it into the corners and steer with the rear wheel. Its got the front end geometry of a chopper. Something like 30* or rake and 5.5" of trail. Its a lot of fun to jump off the right side shift Husky and onto a left side shift Honda for back to back races.

Re: What the helll are you building?

I have ridden those....I dig vintage bikes....but this is the only one I have now.... After being spoiled on a Honda CR250 which is half as heavy and 4 times as powerful oh, and is plush like a couch.....is hard to want to ride the 'ol 'taco....but it is a cool ol piece...

Building this by piling up good (less bad?) parts all around the shop for it.  So far none of the parts have spontaneously installed themselves.

Anyone in Southern California who is into bikes, the Hell On Wheels motorcycle club run what you brung events are very much like Lemons races. Last year they had a motocross, a flat track race, and a hill climb, with classes for everything from actual prepped race bikes to old street bikes with a set of dual sport tires spooned on them.

Neighbor kid wandered over last week talking about wanting to build a go kart. Last weekend, we bought a 212cc Predator engine and some wheelbarrow wheels.

Looks like I'm building a go kart. smile

A Sears-catalog-special 2000-ish Harmony Stratocaster with old-ass 1960s Harmony single-coils and a mid-70s Ibanez humbucker that I've yet to figure out how to wire into the existing harness. Maybe I'll take pictures some day, but probably not so no one has to see how awful my soldering is.
