Topic: Gingerman 2014, weather issues???

Good morning gents,

Just checking in to see if anyone has heard about weather issues with the coming Gingerman race? Mainly, as it was -2 degrees in the morning, and I had to jump start my jeep before work and plow through a foot of snow in my driveway.

Last year was awful cold and it snowed. I don't understand why the powers that be continue to schedule a race in Michigan in April.

I'm just curious how well people will take to driving through inches of snow in the pits, and wearing scuba tanks when they go off track into the lakes formed by melting snow. Last year, when we had almost now snow by Michigan standards, parts of the track were flooded. This year, if we can even race, will be insane...

Not tying to be a grumpy guss here, but I'm already crabby from prepping our truck in the -20 weather we've had here in Michigan, and to think I have to now race in this is, well, depressing!

Help cheer me up! (or smack whoever keeps planning the ginerman races in April, haha!!)

All the best,
Eric

Re: Gingerman 2014, weather issues???

In Michigan, you can't even predict the weather for later today based on this morning's weather but you're basing the weather a month from now on today's?

More seriously, the reason you get April races is probably because that's when the track is available at a price Lemons can afford.  Same reason they end up with the hellishly hot summer races in the desert.

Re: Gingerman 2014, weather issues???

I live about 100 miles from Gingerman in Illinois and I will go on record that that weekend will be first cold!
With lake Michigan being covered with a layer of ice that is much larger then in a normal winter.
This will most likely result in the weather that weekend being similar to last year.
I think you could almost count on it!
Expect cloudy conditions, with the chance of rain/snow/sleet depending on wind direction and air temperature both over the lake and inland.
The wind in that area is mostly west to east which means that the wind will be cooled by the lake waters and will pick up moisture from the surface.
Now once that air gets over land it can then drop it in the form of the above listed rain/snow/sleet.
It's a known fact that when the lake freezes over like it has, spring like weather is delayed  until the lake warms up to what it normally is.
All that surface ice can melt but the water below remains COLD.

You guys are doing a horrible job of cheering the original poster up.

UglyBoost, it will be 80 at the track that weekend.

They put the races on at this time of the year because we go, we go because it sure beats not racing regardless of the weather!

I've raced in four Lemons races, and at every race but one ( in June ) it's been below freezing at night.  I'm beginning to think that maybe it's me.

Look at the bright side -- less chance of your car overheating in 40 degree temps!  That thought always cheers me up.......

It will be butt freezing at Gingerman in April. It always is.

Re: Gingerman 2014, weather issues???

I will assure you it will also either rain, sleet or snow.  But we will race regardless.  Unless of course, it's snowing so hard the corner workers can't see the cars.  Not that I've ever seen that.  Not at Gingerman.  No.  Never.  Not for at least 2 years anyway. wink  We got an IOE at Gingerman... I love that race.

That's nothing it was a full on White Out in 2011 wasn't it?

At least this year there's a chance the lake will still be frozen up enough to ward off a blizzard.

Re: Gingerman 2014, weather issues???

I think we had it pretty good back in 2012.  It was rainy, cold and miserable on practice day.  The rest of the weekend was just cold.

Every single race I've run with Lemons EXCEPT Gingerman, I camp at the track.  I don't know whether I'll try that this October.  But I sure as heck won't in April.

We've experienced a few days of nice weather at April Gingerman races, but those were just to soften everyone up for the blizzards. Anyway, it will be tough to beat the sheer freezing misery of ECR March '14 or Southern Discomfort '10 or Arse Freeze '07.

1) Bring handwarmers
2) Bring more handwarmers
3) Tape up vents in bike helmet
4) Top off propane
5) Bring everything warm in my possession, including the heinously too large fleece parka

And more handwarmers.

Re: Gingerman 2014, weather issues???

I've found that dry socks are the key to surviving cold/wet Lemons races. For races between October and April, I bring extra wool socks.

Re: Gingerman 2014, weather issues???

Yep, warm feet make for happ(-y, -ier) folks.  Think I'm going to break down for some insulated boots, my forward part of my feet feel cold/clammy no matter my sock combo in the current ones.  Mondo sales going on right now.

This is good advice right here.  Having learned the hard way at my first Lemons races, I always bring extra shoes & socks.  At Gingerman 2012 I completely soaked two pairs of each within the first 30 minutes of arriving on Friday due to standing water in the paddock (there's a low spot where lakes form).  Fortunately I brought 3 pairs of shoes.  Waterproof boots are be a good idea.

Yeah, Dave speaks the truth.  I picked up some 'muck boots' at Farm & Fleet after the all-weekend rain at the fall Autobahn 2012 race. $22 well spent.

Impossible to walk in this muck. I should probably get some golf shoes.

The sad thing is, that picture does not do the conditions at that moment any justice.

Looking at that picture, I'd be willing to sign up to do it again....
