Topic: Chihuahua Express 2015

I'm heading to Mexico in April for the Chihuahua Express and trying something a little different than the NSF Barracuda.

http://www.chihuahuaexpress.com/

I have teamed up with Apex Autoworks (They have the 6 wheeled Toyota Hilux and the Montana Mini Van in Lemons) and we are fielding TWO Mazda Miatas.   Of course we wait until the last minute and neither one is very race-car-ish at this point.  Thought I might use this forum to document the progress.

Apex is taking a 90 Miata.

I sold my RX8 and a purchased a 97 Miata.  This is what mine looks like:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a70/ninechaos/1319C147-E931-4694-AEC0-8022AF4BF049_zpsmctnumfq.jpg

It has a hard top but its a shitty aftermarket one.   I'm trying to ditch it and get an OEM top.    You can race open roof in Mexico but I want a top anyway.

I'm going to pull the power steering pump and lines - BUT I think the working AC must stay.    Not for the race so much but for driving around town afterwards.

Anyhoo, at this point I know somewhere between Jack and Shit about Miatas!   If money were no object, step one would be to rip that gutless wonder of an engine out and install a fire breathing turbo rotary!   smile   I would have taken the RX8 but RX8's suck even more!

My plan is to build the car as close as possible to Spec Miata so that when I get done - the car could be sold / raced / or rented easier.    A caged RX8 would have been pretty useless after Chihuahua.

So far I purchased :
Two Spec Miata seats
Two nets
Steering wheel
Wheels -15x7 Momo
Tires - Went with LeMony Direzzas just IN CASE it rains I can use them - plus they aint toooo shabby.   We all run them in Lemons.  Plus Tire Rack had them for 100 each.
Hawk DTC-60 Pads
- and a whole mess of bushings to rebuild the shifter.

To get:
Next purchase is the Spec Miata Suspension Kit but the damn thing is $1600.    Not too any used sets around either.
Cage.   Apex builds them in house and I expect both cars to be caged by the end of January.
Fire suppression
Aluminum Radiator
Shit I'm forgetting

Anyone else feel like taking you LeMon or building a car to come Hoon?

Speedycop?

Model T GT?

Anyone?

The man bought a Miata. I think THIS QUESTION is more relevant.

I have sold enough Rotary Crap to finally order the Spec Miata Suspension Kit from Advanced Autosports.  It was $1600 and one of the hardest Paypal Clicks Ive ever made.

I need an OEM top first to replace it and then I'll unload this one.   I was thinkin $250.

I'll also have stock miata suspension, wheels, interior bits, power steering, and radiator for sale / trade soon.

Re: Chihuahua Express 2015

Let me know if you need any spare 14" rollers with tires. I have at least 8 and probably more like 12 4x100 5-spoke factory Miata wheels, all with tires (mainly if not all Azenis) that are good enough for rolling around/transport but not for racing. The wheels are good enough for racing, just not the tires.

Re: Chihuahua Express 2015

The Miata had a Tennessee title so I had to take the car in for state inspection and title transfer today.   I took it to get it inspected and the ding dong inspector wouldn't give me a break on the tire tread.   Not even for a $100 "tip"

Rather than screw around trying to get another 14" tire for the stock wheel   - I elected to mount up the 15" Momos and tires.   Looked kinda sinister (well, for a Miata) so I took a pic:

19.2 Ground clearance.
It is recommended a minimum ground clearance of 20 cm. (7.9 inches).

^^^ More low = No Bueno in Mexico.

I expect the speed bumps and topes to be a real hazard to a Miata!

Re: Chihuahua Express 2015

soooo..  this race is on our bucket list too..

in the west we have run the cowmaro, multiple engines, gearboxes, clutches and differentials and it's broken right now..  so we ended up with a couple of miata's ;-)  We just ran a miata in our first race @ sears point, except a water in the fuel issue, it ran pretty nice..

There's a chance we may enter this race with the miata.. could be fun to have a couple of Lemons teams there with the same cars/spares.. if we do I will let you know so we could collaborate on spares/strategy/etc.

cheers.

Re: Chihuahua Express 2015

kiwiracer,  Entry for this race is due before the end of the year:  $2750, then it jumps to $3000.   It would be fucking awesome to have a Miata Class!

As it is, looks like there is a 2008 Renault Clio entered so that would put us in the <2.4 liter class.    My car is 1800cc so its where I'll be unless we get some more Miatas.

Apex is hoping for some more 1600cc or less cars to enter so they can run a 1600cc or less class.

Super shiny and too bad you'll never see it.   Came with a cap too.  Probably appropriate to change the hoses now.  Spec Miata requires you retain the heater core so I'll change those too.

YES !!!

Im working on it.. I need buy-in from my team members :-)   Right now our Miata is a 1.6, but we would probably run a 1.8 engine for this.. unless there's a super compelling reason to stay @ 1.6

Don't forget that every driver / navigator will need a license (about $400 I think)

Hotels are expensive if you wait ($170 + tax a night).   I just prepaid for a room 2 miles away for $60/night.

I would run what runs.   I am non-impressed by the Miata but its growing on me.  My goal is to finish all three days and NOT be DNF or DFL.

Re: Chihuahua Express 2015

Def change the heater hoses.  their position in the engine compartment makes them bear a ton of abuse from exhaust heat. timing belt may be due too if you can... and if you go that far hit the water pump...

i've owned my miata now almost 15 years.  picked up an R in austin, neither the seller or myself knew what it was at the time. for $3k.  i dont plan on letting it go.  i feel like i can fix anything that it can throw at me.  rebuilt the motor at 160k just cause i thought it was time.  now at 260k its my DD , i do have other cars to drive (5 at the house now) for other purposes. its not an RX or even a rotary but i think as you go along it will grow on you. now if you want to admit that outloud is another story.

Re: Chihuahua Express 2015

I think I'm overlooking an important part of my build:  HORNS.

I kind of want to install the long retired "Brown Note" horn from the LeMon FC but the compressors and tanks are too much (Brown note wants a 1/2" air feed!).

I have been looking at ebay train horn kits but I think the smaller, lighter ones will be bullshit and the larger, heavier ones will be larger and heavier.

SO, shenanigans aside - what is a good rally horn to get for the Miata.   Ideally it would be relatively inexpensive, light, small, LOUD, and give the little Miata some AUTHORITY!
