Topic: my build story

I'm Riley, and this is my story.

I figure I will document my build, show all the steps I take along the way. Might be mildly entertaining, as I have what I would call only a little experience, and even less time. It's going to be a build from scratch, the car is still street legal. I've been involved with a few other Lemons cars, but they have already come pre-caged and pre-raced, or were built and run by others. This one will be all mine, so I'll get to own the mistakes (hopefully not too many) and the successes (hopefully some).

I'll cover my car acquisition in a later chapter. For now I want to focus on "build", so, like Adamthewoo says, "Join me, shall you?"

First, after having done some research into the costs and time involved with having a cage built by shops in my area, Hanksville Hot Rods primarily, but also from talking to lots of folks, I decided to go ahead and buy a pre-bent kit. To my surprise, it turns out there is a company making a kit for my model of car, and it comes up when you put in the right internet search terms. The company even lists their cages on ebay. It is Rhodes Race Cars in Illinois. They list the cage kit as "Lemons and Chump" legal, and at first the price seems like a bargain. Add in the $250 to upgrade to DOM, and the $125 for shipping, and the total came out to right at $700.  So I ordered it this past Friday and FedEx dropped it off on the porch today.

Hmm, it looks okay, impressive in fact. I'll want to lay it all out and take some measurements, count all the pieces and so forth, but for now I at least have a bundle of steel to play with. Oh yeah, I don't weld either -- we'll be looking for help in that arena for sure. O.k. so can't leave all these pipes up here on the porch, neighbors will think I've started yet another project or something. Gotta hide this stuff quick. So, head out back to the garage, where hopefully we'll be able to get some work started. What the - Oh jeez who let all this stuff pile up?
http://i62.tinypic.com/1pbgrb.jpg

Okay so have to do some work cleaning out the garage so we can lay out these cage pieces. Looks like I'll be busy a few nights this week. Oh well, let's go tinker with the car. I don't drive it every day, it's older, but it still (sort of) runs. Already started in on it awhile back with having a few friends over and tearing out the interior, now it is sitting in the weeds behind the garage. But a little bit of coaxing with some starter fluid and it does fire up. It won't hold idle though, so obviously going to need a good going over before much else can happen. Here's a pic of the engine bay from when I started her up tonight.

Summit sticker = racecar, naturally. I'm guessing someone on here will know the make/model/and year. We'll see if someone guesses it before I say it. Anyway, that's it for now. Let's see how that garage looks after a bit of organizing....

Where are you located?

Re: my build story

Lets see, that looks like Japanese sheet metal, but not Toyota. Carb/Radiator shows its not modern like maybe late 70's. I'm guessing American branded, but Japanese made - maybe a 1978 Dodge (Mitsu) Colt?

How'd I do?

PS, Vise grips are a nice touch wink

It looks like a Chevette, possibly diesel based on this picture.

Hey balls, I'm in Littleton, Colorado.  Where it has been raining this evening, pretty much eliminated the chance of working on the car. But I did work in the garage and made some progress, we'll see how it looks by the weekend.

Mighty strong showing for your first attempt, Spinnetti. Scotland Yard will send a hansom over to your place on Baker Street any day no doubt. But it's not the Dodge Colt.

I don't want to even give you a hint as I suspect you don't even need three guesses to hit the bullseye.

You're right, looks like they have tons of variety, including even mine. I didn't come across this place when I was doing my research. Thanks for adding that, if anything it increases the knowledge base for anyone else out there doing the same kind of research I was doing to find out about these pre-bent cage kits.

Re: my build story

It's definitely NOT a chevette.   We run a Chevette, and Riley62's pictures aren't a Chevette.

Chaase's first picture is a chevette, looks like maybe a 78 or 79.

I'd love to run a Toyota Starlet, because they're stupid light.   But, they seem to have a cult following, and command ridiculous prices.

Fourteen time loser. You'd think I'd know better by now.

Re: my build story

o.k. so last night my wife came out in the garage and said something along the lines of “yeah, I can see something happening.” This is actually high praise for me, as I am an inveterate hoarder of worthless miscellanea – one man’s trash is another man’s treasure , and all that– and it is a rare day that we are able to actually use the garage for parking a DD.

So progress, and now the weekend is here, so should be able to get the car out of the weeds at least, and see what we’re working with.

Spinetti got almost all the way there with his Sherlock-like deductive reasoning, but Maverick74 got it right, it is a Plymouth Arrow. It’s not a 1980, but a 1976. The earlier years had the better looking grills in my opinion, but then also, the 1976 was among the last of the non-catalytic converter cars that were sold in America. The later years of these Arrows all had cats. This just means I’m legal to do pretty much whatever with the exhaust and it will still be perfectly street legal as long as not too loud.

So with cleaning the garage I have come up with the following prizes. These are some of the extra things that get added in with the good stuff I buy at auctions, then I get it home and don’t have the heart to throw it away. Seriously I think I need to order a dumpster for this garage cleanout. So Maverick74, then Spinetti, then chaase, get dibs in that order of your choice at one of the following:
a) .44 mag shift knob thingee (looks kinda cool actually)
b) plastic pedal cover set (these look pretty sketch, suggest installing only on your mother-in-law’s car, or maybe your boss)
c) HF brand code reader

Not sure if these pics are gonna come up, I might have to try again later tinypic website is confusing me at the moment and my family ready to head out to Lowe's etc. Let me know and we’ll figure out a way to get it to you. Maybe at a race but I don’t mind mailing it if it comes to that. I’ll try to get some pics of the car up later today.

Re: my build story

Those pedal pads are super-sketchy.  The mazdarita had them when we bought it.  Judges didnt notice them so it kinda was a waste to leave them on there.  They ended up falling off and sliding around the floorboard.  They "secure tightly" with tabs that bend around the back of the pedal.

All this stuff still in package no less -- perfect for regifting!

Yeah Spinnetti I could tell you were plenty expert about the mitsu/mopars -- great job.

So I worked all damn day yesterday on the garage. Very near completion now, should be able to get the car in there soon. For now here is a teaser shot of it still sitting in the bush.

Hope these pics are going to work this time, I gave up on tinypic and now trying to load from imgur.

Re: my build story

So this first pic is Sunday night, round midnight or so. It took longer than I thought it would but finally got the garage bay where some work can be done.

Then last night I was able to nurse the car in there.

We have a 3 year old and my wife is out of town for work next couple days, so I won't be able to get much done until the end of the week. But I'm pleased with having the garage back to where you can actually walk in there and walk around!

Steve Nowicki ran a privateer Fire Arrow in the SCCA's rally series in the early 1980s and beat the everloving crap out of factory teams with it. He had it (or possibly another car) restored and has occasionally run it in American rally events.

Hi, yes the Fire Arrow is the best of these, with rear disc brakes instead of the drums, and a five speed, plus the four cyl. engine was upped to 2.6 liters displacement. Quite a package in such a small car. I'm shooting for that as part of my plan, as much as I have a plan anyway, we'll see how far it'll get.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. If you look hard enough at the picture of the garage when I started, you can tell I hadn't even finished out the walls yet, I was still looking at insulation and stuff on that one wall back there. As part of this project already I had to get some sheets of plywood up, plus I put up a tire rack and some shelves. All sorts of work went into it but it was worth it.

Hi Eric, I know about Steve Nowicki. I have had this particular Arrow for many years and kind of have a thing for them. At some point a few years back I was searching stuff on internet and ran across Nowicki. I reached out to him through LinkedIn, he accepted, and we exchanged a couple emails. Very nice guy. Can't remember if he sent them, or he had them on some site like facebook maybe or something but I remember looking at some pics he had of what suspension and all he was running in the car. It isn't his original car from back in the 80's. He found a well preserved model from Washington state and bought it, IIRC.  Thanks for that article too, I think I might have read it once before but I'm adding it all to my knowledge base, every little bit seems to help. Here is another pic of the same car that I have on my computer. I think he is still racing it fairly recently?

Man then Jeremy is freaking cool -- looks like in that pic he is running with the original equipment wheels for that Arrow, just kerazy, I think they might be 13"s

Re: my build story

So the latest on the Arrow build. Well it was our daughter's birthday on Sunday so had family over the party, so that meant cleaning the house and setting up the yard for the party on Saturday, plus it was Fourth of July on Saturday as well so in other words -- did not get a great deal done on the build. What I did accomplish was, I bought and set up one of those Harbor Freight tent garages, as there are too many project cars here and Michelle wants to park her Subaru in the garage (so rainy so far this summer, weird).

But rewinding even earlier, on Wednesday last, I had a meeting with a guy who is probably going to do the cage weld. We looked over everything and I still have some research/decisions to make, like for doing the door bars bent out to make ingress/egress easier aka "nascar door bars" and a few other considerations. But overall I feel pretty confident that this guy will do a great job. I had seen other welding that he and his brother had done on caging their own cars and I was impressed with the welding. The weird/cool thing was, I met him when I went to go help out with the axle delivery for another Lemons racer -- http://forums.24hoursoflemons.com/viewt … p?id=30255  So I guess Lemons karma is pretty strong because this guy, Kevin, was the seller of the axle. When I went to his place to pick it up, I got to check out his, and his brother's, mid 80's Celica builds, and they are also caged cars. I mentioned how impressed I was with the welds, and then I talked about this project of mine. Anyway Kevin is a welding instructor, and has tons of experience, and likes these smaller Japanese 4 cyl. cars. So he came over and we talked it over, depending on the few details we have yet to nail down, we are thinking I'll pay him $1000 to do the cage install.

I have previously been part of a team where we paid to have a car caged and it was $2,300 so going this route is saving me around $600. Plus, Kevin is going to let me participate as much as I can, which is also important to me, I'm trying to learn.

So, I am prepping for when I will be able to get the car over to him, and free up the time to spend over there all weekend. I did a little test fitting and laid everything out to make sure it is going to work. Here are pics of the cage pieces all laid and labeled. These are all the pieces I got with the kit from Rhodes.

As you can (sort of) see, I have the main hoop, the halo, then the two front down bars, with a dash bar in between. Then the two rear strut bars, plus two door bars on each door. Then there are 6"x6" plates for the bases of the main hoops, the front bars, and the rear struts. I laid out where I believe the main hoop diagonal goes, along with the little bar for the seatbelts, not entirely sure I have that one right. But then, after all that, I still have two bars left. one four foot, and one 1 foot long. I am not sure where those go. Maybe the four footer is going up above, in the halo, so the halo gets a diagonal as well? I might have a couple of the bars mixed up. I'm hoping some of you will chime in here with instructions that are more useful than the ones that came with the kit. They are just generic instructions that offer a generalized guide as to how it will go, but then the specifics are up to each individual application. So, that is where I'm at with it for now. Not much, but once we start the welding grinding, it will go quicker.

That's all for now, I'll post more as it develops. Really digging the tent though, the car can store in there with the windows down and work-in-progress and everything. It's not a big tent, but then the car is so small, that the tent seems plenty large.
