Topic: 1989 CRX Si with d16y8 vtec head on a d16a6 block for $500 --Thoughts?

Seller is asking $800:
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ … 95616.html

89 si jdm shell with a d16y8 vtec head on a d16a6 block very clean swap the shell needs a lot of work im practically sellin a whole setup for a swap the shell needs some work paint dents n stuff like that the car could b driveable its got an exahust vafc vtec controller n lot more its pretty fun to drive throw me some offerts willin to trade for somethin else so u can use this engine to swap some other car or fix this shell

I talked to him several times, and offered $500, after explaining that was all I could pay for a Lemons car. He agreed, and we're supposed to meet up around 8pm tonight in Springfield, once I leave work and go get the tow dolly. He says it has a $500 VTEC controller, a d16y8 vtec head on a d16a6 block, a JDM Del SOl Si trans, and stage 3 clutch. Obviously the engine pic is of another similar car because it's in a red car, and his is silver. I'd like to use the drivetrain and suspension in the Prefect, if I don't just throw my $150 Del Sol cage in this and race it as-is. Thoughts?

I need to know ASAP, because I know very little about these Hondas, and I don't wanna blow $500 in a couple of hours. On the other hand, he claims the VTEC controller alone was $500. This thing shouldn't be hard to part out for more if I choose to do so, should it?

The Honda CRX is a great car.  Light, good power/weight ratio, great handling and dead reliable.

But come on.

Look at your team's cars.  You're debating between a CRX as is or putting parts of it in a... what was it... A PREFECT!  Good gawd man!

No good sir.  You are not like so many of us who find a reliable, quick car and say "Well, I guess I can work with that."  No, you are the brave, the daring and the Effluent.

I don't know how this question even came up.

Re: 1989 CRX Si with d16y8 vtec head on a d16a6 block for $500 --Thoughts?

Well, here's the thought process:

Buy the CRX for the drivetrain/suspension for the Prefect tonight.
Put $200 u-pull-it 118k DOHC 4.6 Mark VIII motor/ $150 scratchy Cobra T45 5 speed in the Mark VIII next weekend. It doesn't run/shift properly? Slap the Del SOl cage in this CRX as a backup plan.

We are paid in full for Feb. CMP, so we only have a few weeks to get ready.

that's a steal.  I could sell ten of those here for 2 grand a piece

Re: 1989 CRX Si with d16y8 vtec head on a d16a6 block for $500 --Thoughts?

Dude. This CRX has a STRONG little motor! $400 bucks bought the car, title and all, but it's a real POS otherwise. Mad torquey 1.6, with a header, fart can, intake, Apexi VTEC controller/tuner ($500 by itself), stage 3 clutch, and head work. No real brakes (you gotta pump to stop), one axle clicking (other one is new), right rear wheel noisy (wheel bearing?), and the driver's door held shut with the seatbelt. Looks like death warmed over. Pics to come in a day or two.

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

Haha!  Obviously the owner was fully into the engine build...and nothing else!  Love it!

Re: 1989 CRX Si with d16y8 vtec head on a d16a6 block for $500 --Thoughts?

Pics tonight or tomorrow. There ain't a straight body panel on it. Yeah, the owner obsessed about the engine, and did a helluva job on it. He tried to show me how to operate the Apexi VTEC tuner, but I'm gonna need to download a manual. He guesstimated HP at 160+. I asked how, on a 127HP engine? He said between the header and exhaust, the head work, the intake, and the programmable tuner, it was possible. I dunno if that was just ricer math (adding up the claimed HP gains of each item), or if he knew what the combo really makes, but I was truly impressed with how quick it was. Of course, the dash lights aren't working, the high beams don't work, it wouldn't pass an inspection anywhere in the country, and you need an anchor to stop it. Maybe that's why the driver's door stays open, so you can drag your foot to slow it down...

Re: 1989 CRX Si with d16y8 vtec head on a d16a6 block for $500 --Thoughts?

Hehehehe, no way in hell a SOHC D16 will put down 160 hp, that's some SERIOUS ricer math.  However, you do have a pretty damn nice start to a FAST Lemons car, well until it blows it headgasket.

That swap is known as a "Mini-Me" swap.  I'd guess 120 whp or so in a car that could seriously get down below 2000 lbs, hell 1800 lbs with cage if you really tried.

If that thing has ANY interior that is in good shape, you will turn that into a ZERO dollar car in a hurry.  Seriously, search ebay and see what I am talking about.  The seats, climate control panel, rear storage tray, door panels are all worth good $

Nice find!  DC Craigslist rules.

I told him I didn't want to rip him off, but I just couldn't do more than $400, after driving it. Between the motor lurching, the right rear making noise, the SERIOUS praying when the brake pedal went to the floor on my test drive in the middle of Lee Highway in Fairfax, the drivers door flapping in the breeze, and the heat not working "due to my brother taking out his stereo system today", I figured I was mostly buying the motor.

Yeah, DC CL RULES! Where else are you gonna get a free '96 Sentra? I pick that up this afternoon...
