Topic: Introducing Team Metroneige

I'd like to officially introduce our team. We're a bunch crazy canucks based out of Ottawa planning  run the Lemons in Detroit next Fall.  With what you ask, well we plan to run a mid engine 2 stroke Geo Metro we like to call the Metroneige.

I could write for a while about the car, the plan and how we're going to pull this off but it's simple if I just refer to our build blog (http://metroneige.blogspot.com ).   We plan to post on it often so don't forget to follow our progress.  This project is bound to finish is some kind of HUGE disaster to it's perfect for the Lemons.

Let me know what you guys think.

All motorcycle engined Metros should use plungers for trans/diff/whatever seals.

Re: Introducing Team Metroneige

The engine come out of a 1992 Suzuki VMax4 750cc, so we have about 140hp and more torque then we know what to do with in an engine that one person can lift by himself.

Actually it's a I4 that rev up to 9000rpms.  The pictures in the blog was just to show the sheave not the actual engine.  Pictures of the engine coming soon.  As for the noise we'll figure something out if it's an issue tongue

Re: Introducing Team Metroneige

As we were pulling the engine out of one of the cars on the weekend in the snow we had a discussion about first.  We tried to determine if our project was going to a first of anything for Lemons.  We came to the conclusion that we're not the first team to run metro, not the smallest engine to ever run nor the first mid engine swap.  We however couldn't think of any team that ran a CVT or a 2 stroke engine.

Are we the first team to have a 2 stroke powered car or a CVT?

Okay, I'm pushing my luck by posting this image again, but hey, at least it's on-topic.  Yes, I imagine you'd be the first team to bring that combination to a race.  No, you won't be the first to bring one to Lemons, for some definitions of Lemons.  This is the drivetrain of my KV Mini 1 from the inaugural Concours d'Lemons:  it's got all that and more, from the factory.  One-cylinder, two-stroke, 125cc of raw power.  Belt-driven CVT to rollers rubbing against the rear tires.  Um, it's French.  You probably could have guessed that.

By the way, your plan strikes me as all kinds of wonderful.

Re: Introducing Team Metroneige

WOW that thing as a serious case of French engineering.  Has it ever run a Lemon race or just the concours?  Wait is the concours event an official Lemon event or just a name knockoff?

Just the concours; it's got a top speed of around 35 mph on level ground, so although it is street-legal, it's just for putting around town.  I suspect getting it through a tech inspection would be a bit tricky anyway.  The concours is an official event, though there's only been one so far (more scheduled this year)-- check out the listings for 2009 and 2010:

You may very well have the first snowmobile engine.  If so, you've raised the bar for the next team, though this is an intriguing juxtaposition of car and powerplant:

We had the same idea but our outboard specialist persuaded us that it was going to be a very hard conversion.  The engines are designed to be mounted upright with the crank pointing straight down.  This means that all the engine mounts are on the bottom.  To attach it to and car it would have to be counter livered which is a big no no with the amount of torque 2 strokes produce.  Not to mentioned that we'd have to modify the open loop cooling system to a closed loop and the fact that outboard motor hold their value very well with makes its in the Lemon world unattainable.

For these reasons and million others we decided that going with the snowmobile engine would be a better proposition.

If anyone wants to try using a boat engine to power a car go for it, I would LOVE to see it done.

Though the Gnomes have not won yet with the mid-engine setup.  They were front engine/FWD when they won in '08.

Good luck on the build!  Looks sweet!

I've been waiting for a two-stroke. Less parts=more reliable!

Exactly what we were thinking the only issue we have is overheating. Which in a 2 stroke causes then piston and cylinders to melt.  On the bright side we won't have oil starvation issues, melted valves, warped heads or rods grenading out the side of the engine, just pure simple reliable 2 stroke AWSOMENESS.
