Some subaru nerd can chime in but I'm 90% sure they didn't make a turbo in the US for those years.
I'm pretty sure the first turbo wagon you could buy from Subaru stateside were the bugeyed ones from 2002 or thereabouts.

How sad, but I believe you may be right.  I was living in Germany when these caught my eye and I thing the 1996 a neighbor bought was the real deal.

I just assumed it had a real engine.
