Topic: Recommendation for tool set for kids?

Can anyone recommend a good starter tool set for a young kid? I don't want 150pc of screwdriver attachments or 67 allen wrenches along with 3 different size box cutters... I want like a crescent wrench, pliers, wire cutters, small hammer, small saw, maybe some basic sockets, open end wrenches...

Ideally they'd be colored something to distinguish them from my tools Not that he'd take my tools-- more like I'd take his.

Any suggestions for like the 7-11 age range?

I could piece something together, but wanted to ask here if someone found something good.

Sadly they do not make a Wally sized one...he could carry the compressor, battery tools, your entire wrench collection and then some.  Luckily they do not make a Wally sized one because the whole tool box would be wherever tSoG is.

Re: Recommendation for tool set for kids?

Thanks for those links. I'm thinking I'm going to have to supplement whatever I find. I really hate how they boost the "tool count" by putting in chromed pot-metal allen wrenches and a cacophony of screwdriver tips.

So far, this is the one I'm leaning towards:

I like that it has a hammer and a saw and is packed in its own case. I can maybe supplement with a socket set and box end wrench set.

I seem to recall there were like blue anodized tools offered through sears not that many moons ago...

I know I'm kidding myself-- he'll probably never touch the darned things, and Legos and Minecraft don't require hand tools...

I have a harbor frieght set that I stick in the back of my car.  Its not horrible(although everything is the low end stuff you kind of expect to break at any time even though non of it has when I have used them) but I would suggest going with something a bit nicer that the can continue to use and add tools to as they go on.

FWIW, I got a small sears kit when I was a wee lad.  I still have some of those tools, but they weren't 'craftsman' brand so as they've worn out/broken out I can't exchange them.  They've moved to the junk drawer.

The junk drawer!  Won't someone think of the childhood memories in the junk drawer?!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

sounds like incentive to hire me "full time" since I can't keep my own shit together.

Re: Recommendation for tool set for kids?

I just bought the green craftsman (evolv) stuff for my nephew.. The loaded tote bag and 101 piece socket and wrench set..

Well, it's mainly for his mom (my sister), but I'll let him think he's the man of the house with the tools..

Re: Recommendation for tool set for kids?

I strolled around Sears for a while yesterday. I was about to buy the Evolve stuff in green as a $17 starter kit, but I ended up buying the red kit I posted the pic of above through Amazon.com. Mostly because it all fits in one neat box.

I'll get him one of the "mechanics tool kits" later, maybe, that has sockets and box end wrenches in a second self-contained box.

But yea, had they had this one in stock, I'd have probably bought it instead and just added a small saw for $13 more:

Re: Recommendation for tool set for kids?

I brought the evolv socket set a few years before I started in Lemons just to have a complete set. I use it all the time now and have not broken a socket and the rachet still works great. Of course I have lost the 10mm socket but otherwise a good buy. Only complaint with my set is that the tube sockets are 1/4 drive not 3/8.
