Topic: Paint Charged to Budget?

Is paint and other decorative features charged to the $500 budget?

Technically, it is supposed to count.

Typically, it is overlooked.

Rustoleum is $20 a gallon and sprays well if you thin it with laquer thinner.

If it ain't broken, fix it 'til it is.

Re: Paint Charged to Budget?

Rustoleum? Spray? Thinner? You F1 guys have it easy.....five-for-a-buck brushes and a disposable roller....paint from the Habitat for Humanity salvage joint or scraped from the bottom of every leftover can in the garage....guess you're not Cadillac Bob for nothing! smile

Re: Paint Charged to Budget?

Actually, you can buy a crappy spray gun at Harbor Freight for $10 or so... use it once and throw it away.  That's as cheap as brushes and rollers.. and faster!  But let's not get into an "I'm cheaper than you" contest.... smile

If it ain't broken, fix it 'til it is.

Re: Paint Charged to Budget?

Ya, tools are so cheap it's scary....I bought a "2 for 35$" gun set and realized that I'd probably use 7 or 8 bucks worth of cleaning supplies to clean and properly store it, plus time, so I painted my trailer and threw it away...don't know how they can retail this stuff so cheaply...

Re: Paint Charged to Budget?

Our car came out looking great using Rustoleum applied with foam rollers.  It looked like a complete POS before paint and came out better than we ever dreamed.  We didn't do any prep other than wiping it down with degreaser.  It's still a POS, it just looks better now.

To this with a few hours of rolling

Re: Paint Charged to Budget?

That really does look good, Jeff!  Did you do a lot of wet sanding as well?  How many coats did it take?

I've wanted to try the "Rustoleum and Rollers" method for a while, but haven't had a car to do it on yet.

Re: Paint Charged to Budget?

We already painted the car, just wanted to know if it should be included in our budget.  Every little bit helps.

Wet sand?  haa haa haa haa... no

We literally wiped off the dirt and grease from the build and rolled on the paint.  It took a few hours total over two nights.  Since we used two colors, we had to allow the white paint to dry for taping the body line and stripes.  It has a few roller marks here and there, but it shines great and looks good from 10 feet away.

We started with a POS and ended up with a shiny POS.  smile

For 2008 BABE rally we went from this

much the same as troy and friends, a quick wipe down to get any wax off the car, roll it on and enjoy (the graphics are vinyl)  The paint was nice and shiny and looks as good as it needed to for a $250 car.  Shoulda kept that one for Lemons, it was $250 with a warmed over 5.0 and 5 speed and tasty upgraded suspension but the body was severely tweaked.  We managed to buy another convertible shell with cage for $200 and planned to put the 2 together but other things got in the way.

BTW, if you ever go on the BABE rally costume day can get a bit dicey in the south...unless you drive something decorated like the General Lee...then you are just accepted as one of the local crazies.

Re: Paint Charged to Budget?

I just used stupid cheap walmart spray paint on my Lemons 318i.  Total cost for 6 cans of spraypaint was under 10 bucks

Re: Paint Charged to Budget?

I "painted" lots of cars with rattle cans when I was a teenager, but never with only 6 cans!  Then again, they were all lots bigger than a 318.
