Topic: Need Way to Close Door

While "decluttering" the 95 Toyota Camry I'm running in Houston in 2 weeks, I threw out all the inner door workings thinking I'd just weld the door shut and ingress/egress through the window.

Well, there's not enough room to do that with the seat and cage in place and I already threw out ALL the inner mechanical pieces on the door, the handle, everything.

I thought about using a gate latch to hold the door closed. Will this pass tech and if not, anybody got any ideas? The door is naked and empty and all the parts are long gone.

Re: Need Way to Close Door

nothing a sawzall can't fix......just take the whole door off......you don't have to have doors-hood-trunk...only fenders....

eye and hook from the hardware store? You will be asked to get out quickly in tech, so plan for that.

Can you cut the door sil out and make room?

Re: Need Way to Close Door

how about a gate latch?

Re: Need Way to Close Door

Screw that. Make sure the cage is working as a structural member and take it topless! I don't think we've seen a denuded Camry so far. Just think of the weight savings!

A gate latch with a pull cable run across the door will make for an easy exit after running out of talent and setting the car on fire.

Re: Need Way to Close Door

thanks all. gate latch it is.

we may nude it out for the next race if we survive this one! the cage is solid, so this would actually be a nice touch.

It also adds to the theme for the right car.

The hood latch on the Snoopy Van were $0.50. But 100% functional.

The tailgate latch cost nothing, we had the rebar lying around, a little welding and you have a ghetto tailgate latch. Either option would work on doors.
