Topic: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

Jay & Co. have published the layout we'll be driving, and it's pretty much as we'd speculated previously:

http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/sears10/

Track Configuration:
We will be using the the old-school "Carousel" turns 5 & 6, using the extended 7a, and to use up your brake pads even more, the 9a dogleg. Click here for a map of what to expect - follow the black line...

http://www.jagpromotions.com/images/Lemons/SearspointlessRaceway.jpg

Three cheers for getting to use the full turn 11 and not the wimpy 11a!

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

I agree, absolutely the best overall configuration, safe and long enough to spread the cars out and still maintain the best passing area's.  It will be much harder on brakes than Thunderhill.  This configuration has 4 hard braking areas - T4 (may not look like it, but it is downhill / off camber so you gotta tip-toe through T4 else you go off track on exit, a no -no), T7, T9a, T11.

If you had brake problems at Thunderhill, you better do something about it or go real easy on them, besides the hard area's above, T2 takes some brakes too, so better get those brakes up to snuff or it will be a miserable weekend.  Our brakes were fine at Thunderhill and we still did some brake upgrades for Infineon.

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

I like it....as a new to sears driver...I found the high speed section through 9 into 10 quite challenging and I had concerns about high speeds "offs" into the wall HARD outside of 10...even worse with rain...the longer 7a also slows down the run into the S curves a bit too....9a does look a bit tricky I'd guess its more like 2 separate turns....brake then the slight right...then brake HARD before the hard left...with a really late apex...

You will need more brakes than at Thunderhill...I found the run in to 7 quite tricky..similar to the downhill section before 10 at TH...

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

With the normal course the damage in T10 was from people spinning and hitting the wall on the INSIDE of  T10.  It is a fast and unforgiving corner in the normal configuration, Jay and Co are most wise to run this config for Lemons.  That wall on the inside of T10 has injured quite a few people, so the slower you can make T10, the safer it is.

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

No, don't hit them at all.

Just a heads-up: the Lemons Supreme Court will be harsher than ever before on Penalty Box recidivists at Sears Pointless; if we think a driver/team/car is a menace to others, we'll deploy the dreaded Give Us Your Pistons penalty.

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

Judge,

Say you start a pool for the most times a wall is contacted for each day.

I will put my money on the exit of turn 11. It will mostly be slower speed stuff.

You could have everyone who touches the wall there paint the side of their car white with red stripes. It becomes a clear badge of Dishonor.

I think most walls are safe, but 11....

Ah, a policy to encourage rotary engines and mechanical brakes.  Most praiseworthy.

I would imagine that any car that hits a wall will have a hard time getting back on track just from damage....  and the odds of someone hitting the wall is VERY high....I'd say 100% chance....200% if its raining :>)

Doc Brown?

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

First, you would be surprised how few people hit the wall on the exit of 11, even in the rain, not that many. The corner is slow enough for everyone that few cars hit the wall on exit. With this configuration the most sphincter pucking place -especially in the wet- will be the exit of the carousal (T6), it is fast and if you over correct a slide you can go up an emankment and roll, if the rear end comes around and you spin to the inside on exit, there is a wall. RESPECT T6, especially in the wet.

Other than the exit of T6 the rest of the track has runoff room.  If you have never run Infineon it is AWESOME!!

I found T6 to have very good traction in the rain....however the EXIT of 6 where it transitions to the drag strip DID NOT have great traction....once you come off the banked downhill (three guesses where the water goes) onto the flat dragstrip....it tends to be slippery if you are doing anything other than letting the car track out to the exit...

Maybe I'll post a video of one of my rain laps...were talking SLOW SLOW SLOW....50 seconds a lap slower than my best time!!!  Wipers on full blast, can't see anything....car sliding everywhere....

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

You are correct, good grip (especially the rain line) but on exit when you hit the drag strip - be very careful. Pro's have been caught out at T6 in the wet.

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

I'll provide a public service right now by telling you all that the most dangerous spot in heavy rain at Infineon is the straight between T6 and T7.  There is a small river that runs diagonally across the track.  Your left front tire hits it before your right front, and if the water is deep enough, you're going fast enough or your tires are worn enough (or some combination of the 3), your car will rotate to the left as the water slows that left front tire, and you're seconds away from a nasty impact with the wall on the left.  In one 3 hour rain enduro I saw 5 (five!!!) cars spin and hit that wall in front of me.  On the straight!!

Three options to make it through safely:

1 - slow down
2 - move way over to the right where the river is more perpendicular to the track
3 - follow in the tracks of the car ahead of you (my personal favorite)

I hope it rains, but then again, I'm a sadist.

Good luck.

Dean

Actually, I was thinking more Dwight Holly-style rubber hose filled with BBs type justice.

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

Frankly I'd be quite happy if it's not wet. I've watched some in-car videos of driving Sears in the rain and they either involved tip-toeing or hitting some unforgiving stationary object, neither of which look fun to me. I'd much prefer a dry race with as little contact with solid objects as possible, thank you very much.

Re: Sears Pointless Track Config Published

Rain = the great equalizer, I'm with you I hate the friggen rain. In an enduro there is just too much time (for everyone) to mess-up and crash or get black flagged. Generally in early March in Nor Cal it won't rain for the entire time so some of the most difficult driving conditions are in the changing times from rain to dry, n a "drying track" as you try to go faster and push harder as the track dry's. It is actually during these conditions when drivers get into trouble.
