Topic: I want to build your Air Cooled VW based Roll Cage/ Chasis in DFW area

I need some money and would love to build someone a new car.  Not in a position to do it myself but would love to take lessons learned from my car and help someone build a new car.  Drop me a line if there is any interest or if anyone just wants some advice.

Re: I want to build your Air Cooled VW based Roll Cage/ Chasis in DFW area

We have started a VW bug here in FL for the FL events.
The only thing we have not been able to solve is how to do a cage around the engine that is strong yet can come off quickly should we need to work on or swap the engine.

We are thinking about running a Bar over the transmission to each shock mount. Then use plates off the lower trans mount.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks

Look at how cages are built for Baja bugs, the rear "engine cage" bolts to the main cage so it can be removed for engine access.

It will be hard to fit under stock bodywork if that is your goal.

We are having to design something similar to protect our engine but we have a bit more room to work with.

Get a rear solid motor mount then have the cage bolt to that.  The EMPI or Bug Pack brands have a bolt hole for the rear cage.  We did not have a solid mount for the first race so I built some custom brackets that bolted to the rear horns at the 36mm bolts and then used tube steel to build out from there.  I tied the bottom of my cage to this so it would be easy to remove.  As for the top your gonna have to give up some sheet metal and tie it through the fire wall.  We used flat plates with four bolt pattern so we had a plate on either side that we could tighten the fire wall between the plates.
