Topic: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

I'll be your intrepid reporter, reporting intrepidly, for at least part of the day today (Saturday) before I have to leave.

Dawn broke very foggy at MSR-Houston this morning with temps in what I'm guessing are the upper 50's or lower 60's. The front gates have just opened up and the folks who slept not in campers, trailers, Kia Sorrento's, or in the bevy of Class A RV's that seem to haunt the Gulf Coast Region races like the curse of Jay Lamm's past, are now pouring into the track. A lot of folks are going to wish that they were carrying the rally lights that they took off their cars after Nelson Ledges.

The official festivities kick off this morning at 9:00 central time, with the mandatory drivers meeting at 8:15. I'm just hoping to get in a cup of coffee before then, as the concession stand isn't open yet. That's not so bad, since I forgot to hit the ATM on the way in and I'm guessing it's mostly cash and carry.

I took some foggy morning photos but need to work on posting them, as I haven't loaded GIMP onto my laptop yet and don't want to post up a bunch of giant megapixel images.

The circus is in town! Now if we can just keep the elephant from shitting on everything, it'll be a good day. I'll report back more later. Cheers all.

About 20 minutes in & we have our first major incident. 4 cars got together coming out of Sugar & Spice. The teal Gremlin looks done & the 83 black Escort fiipped twice outside the track. Driver is ok & got out of car on his own. I think he's going to walk it off.

The number zero Le Car is totally covered in carpet or something. It's a Pepe LePew theme & it's awesome.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

All the fog has burned off. Broken clouds but the sun is breaking out, temps in the mid-60's. It's turning out to be a beautiful racing day.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

This race is woefully short of effluent cars. I think the oldest ride is a 72 MGB. For all the crapcans in Texas that get posted on our boards, none of them are showing up for this race today.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

Racing today seems overall better & cleaner than I remember from races past. But being at this race & not racing feels kind of like being a lion tamer watching the circus from the grandstands: still enjoyable but its just not the same.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

I'll give the Hour 6 scoring update in a bit. The clouds have started rolling in again and many teams' hopes are falling faster than the ambient temperatures. Some teams have already given up hope & are packing it in, while others are making plans for late-evening parts store runs. Just saw a team get Saran wrapped to their car. I bet there is a kink for out there somewhere that would pay good money for those photos...

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

Packing it in less than 6 hours into the race?  WTF?  Unless they were DQ'd due to a rollover,  the car is burned beyond recognition or there are no spare parts within a 10 hour drive, they should be laying under their cars wrenching away.  They should be ashamed of themselves.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

The Prancing Donkeys Integra are leading after 6 hours, followed by the nudists SHO (no, I'm not joking). Somehow, 2 SHO's are in the top 6, but there are 26 cars within 10 laps of the leader, so it's still really anybody's ball game.

8th hour scoring update shortly. Car 111, Toyota Celica GT,  just blew up on track. Looks like driver got out fine. Another lesson in don't skimp on your fire gear. See the new issue of Grassroots Motorsport mag for another chilling story along those same lines.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

Almost out of battery so the Hour 8 update will be short. Red Rocket SHO is somehow inconcievably in first place. 23 teams are still within 20 laps of first; 13 teams within 7 laps of first place. Gotta catch my flight home. Cheers guys.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

Any word on what is to be done over the SR20 powered SE-R. I know they received 9200 penalty laps but will they leave with the keys? Sweet car nonetheless.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

I read all the Jalopnik posts demanding that Jay should claim it, but I don't see the need.  They are assured a last place finish due to the 9200 BS laps, and they risk more costly damage than the legal Lemons cars, and from the sounds of it, they did try to build a Lemons car, but didn't complete it.  Building a Lemons racer takes a ton of time and isn't cheap once all the safety gear and race fees are paid.  Rather than not show up at all, I applaud this team for trying to salvage their weekend.

If they drive like asshats, then all bets are off and they could lose their SE-R to the curse or to Jay, but the car alone shouldn't cause them to lose a ton of money.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

I fully agree with the thought of trying to salvage some form of a weekend of racing, but I have to ask where do you draw the line. I hate to see anyone be made an example of or anyone lose their vehicle that they put a lot of time and money into. Even though they can't win the race, how is this not made into a common occurrence and will be discouraged for bringing in ringers just for some seat time. I love the concept of the race and hope to see it's original intent held true.

I look at it as you don't bring a car and come party or you run what you brung and put it on the chopping block for the almighty and the crowd to judge. If it falls to the peril of the curse or claimed then so be it but if not you get a weekend of racing in a superior car.

To the almighty above, it is left at your feet to do with what you shall.

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

I'm just wondering how it's doing.  Is the mightyB13 all that?

Re: Gator-o-Rama 2010 Update Post

The SHO won the actual race.

Troy got the IoE award. (!!!)

We landed at 23rd - a team best for us.

The whole weekend ruled.

I'm so tired that the thought of unload #2, truck edition, makes me want to cry.

Wow, I saw it was a Z.  Didn't know it was Troy.  Congrats Troy!
