Anyone wanting to "skimp" or "whine" about safety needs to watch that like 100 times.  Glad everyone was ok

Would you say that the Escort got ifb_moled by the Miata?

It does seem a bit unsafe and kinda against the "must have fenders" rules, huh?

I read this being discussed some other places, so out of pure curiosity i'll open this can of worms.

after seeing this, and the car on lid = done for season rule, will it still stand without a small clause?

the zx2 was completely victim of a NDA move by Franco in the "whatsa behind me is notta importante" miata punting him into other car, which resulted in AWESOME TO WATCH flip.

if you are the sole-proprietor in a lid-skidding endeavor, you have no business being on a track, but this guy i don't know if i would say didn't have business being on a track.

Every accident is a combination of various mistakes

Mistake #1 Passing between two cars with no out (Escort)
Mistake #2 Lack of vehicular awareness in heavy traffic (Miata)
Mistake #3 Not widening the fenders when new wheels extend past fender (Gremlin)

If any rule was to change it would be to make sure all cars have fenders flared enough to possibly prevent this particular oddity from happening again (atleast on a straight), but the Flip and Done rule should not change.

Both the Gremlin and Escort had wider wheels. The Escort were at least 30% of the tread exposed. The Gremlin was maybe 10%.

I had BBQ with the Gremlin team and looking at the damage on the car , it appears the Escort hit the Gremlin in the front of the door then made contact with its front tire. The Gremlin would of been turning slightly to the right exposing the back of its tire.  The Escorts tire hit the Gremlins tires and off it went..

Watching a couple of the in-cars now, I have to wonder that even if the miata hadn't moved over if the Escort wouldn't have still hit the Gremlin, or the MG that was already in the kink when the Escort was attempting the pass.  As it is, the Escort hit the MG in the rear quarter while on his roof... had he been trying to make the turn, I think he'd have tagged the front fender.

I think the least-fault (as in none) goes to the Gremlin, you can tell he's so far to the inside, he couldn't have been more out of the way.  He was ahead of the Escort at a point close enough to the kerbing that it'd be foolish (imho, of course) to attempt an outside pass right there on him... an Escort pass there would've resulted in either a chop of the Gremlin, or an impact with the MG I think.

Maybe if there's in-car from the Escort my thoughts will change though.   Not every video gives the complete story... this is just how I currently see it... ymmv of course

Just to clarify a bit:

6.3: Why Am I Upside-Down? Rule: You're upside-down because you have no business being out on a racetrack. Any driver who puts a car on its roof is out for the rest of the season, beginning immediately. Any car that rolls during a race will be removed from the race.

Though I'm lobbying hard to get this changed. I really think it should be called, "Why Am I On my Roof? Rule."

I have an Escort ZX2...

I now has tires that stick out past the fenderwells.

I have time to make flares.
I also have 6 stock rims with good Falkens mounted...
