Topic: Fuel guage ideas?

Hey guys, we ended up tearing out every wire that started life in our 1987 RX7.... By doing so, we have no way to use the factory fuel level guage.  Does anyone have an easy way to keep track of fuel?  So far, the car has driven about 10 miles so we have no way to estimate milage.... Any help would be cool.

Wooden stick.

Use it like a dip stick.

Re: Fuel guage ideas?

Assuming you still have the factory fuel level sender in the tank, it's pretty easy to rig up a fuel gauge to it- just one wire from sender to gauge, then power and ground at the gauge. Speaker wire works fine.

Re: Fuel guage ideas?

love it....... Sounds like three great ideas!

Re: Fuel guage ideas?

Everything I know, I learned from Calvin and Hobbes:

Calvin:     How do they know the load limit on bridges, Dad?
Dad:        They drive bigger and bigger trucks over the bridge until it breaks. Then they weigh the last truck and rebuild the bridge.

So, just enter your first race and drive until you run out.  Refill the tank and run one less lap before refuelling.

What could possibly go wrong?

do it sport bike style:

Get a 1 gallon fuel cell and a valve. when your car studders and begins to stall, open the valve to the small fuel cell, and take the next pit stop.

Gator-O-Rama 2012 "Organizers Choice" -2 laps 1 trophy, but i still finished ahead of an E30
Yee-Haw 2013 No trophy -26 laps, I think I see a pattern here

LOL... that is actually a good idea... A small reserve cell.

Re: Fuel guage ideas?

Rotate the float until it's at the desired low fuel reading and check the resistance with a VOM....then set up an LED or two with resistors as needed to make a low fuel warning light...maybe three bucks worth of parts..

Re: Fuel guage ideas?

Actually, since this is road racing, the car will sputter in the turns long before you run out. Run till first sputter then come in...  No need for a guage at all. Probably want to change drivers more frequently than that anyway.

Wiring in these cars is a mess, we just taped it all up in a bundle and forgot it.

At least 15 lbs of wire still in that car!

This is Lemons, most cars sputter all the time smile

Re: Fuel guage ideas?

all you need to do is find out the impedence range of the stock sender (assuming it works)....they tend to vary...some are infinte ohms full other are empty....some have ranges....just find out what your is (you could test it empty and then test it full if you can't find the data) then find a gauge that has the proper range and your set!!

we have a surge tank for our big cell, and will have a light that comes on when big cell has no fuel pressure, leaving us surge tank to get to pits

i got lucky there......

Re: Fuel guage ideas?

I had a customer that didn't want to run any gauges in his truck, had a smoothed out dash. So I put a sight gauge in his fuel cell with clear fuel line.

If you dont mind sharing I'd love some more information on how you are doing this.  What are you using to determine the no pressure situation from the main tank?  Just a pressure switch inline in the fuel line or am I overthinking this?

Eh, it was what he asked for. I tried to talk him into a $30 sending unit and just hiding a gauge somewhere.

That may not be but the OP is asking for a race car...

Therefor you gave a suggestion for a race car that won't work for a race car... where's the logic in that?!
