Topic: Dye and Nomex

We have a team member wanting to dye their racing suit due to the fade and the fact he can't stand the stripes.

Yay or Nay?

Re: Dye and Nomex

I say nay, it would kind of suck to be enveloped in a roaring jet tower of flame because it turned out the dye was flammable or somehow reduced the fireproofing qualities of the suit.

Re: Dye and Nomex

I would nay the idea.  Why don't you just tie dye a set of painters overalls and wear them on top of your race suit?

Re: Dye and Nomex

Nay, it will fail tech.   The dye could subvert the fire-resistance of the Nomex...

If it doesn't change the chemical composition of the suit then I don't see how it would change it. Especially water based dyes.

The fabric had to get dyed initially or it would be a dull yellow color.  Fabric dyes are typically metal or organo-metallic salts.  Non-flammable in their own right BUT any modifications to the suit that are not approved might fail tech.

Section 5.1.4 deals with dying Nomex and the types of Cationic dyes that work.

Thank you... We have nomex thread so we can always remove the patches and re-attach them after the dying process.

Re: Dye and Nomex

As an aside, I may have left a black driving glove in when I washed my gear, and I may have ended up with a pink lining in my suit and pink nomex...but I can't confirm on deny that...so you could try that tongue
