Topic: Surrendering to the Obvious

It's time I face a few simple facts.  First, I've exhausted my personal supply of Concours d'Lemons cars (yup, both of 'em).  Second, the entire weekend at Sears Pointless was heaps of fun.  Third, this has been the view out my front door for the last couple of years:

Sorry about the glare; I should probably wash that window.  And no, I'm not married-- how'd you guess?

Anyway, in light of all this I've decided to cram a cage into the '67 SAAB 96 and have a go at this racing thingy.  I got the car several years ago from the president of the local SAAB club after he dragged it from a farmer's field before coming to his senses.  In many ways it's in okay shape (nicer paint than the house...):

but it is in need of some engine work at this point:

Since I've never built a race car, put together a team, or raced before, I assume everything will go quickly, smoothly, and most importantly, well under budget.

I'll probably be pestering people in the Puget Sound area for advice on matters such as caging (Hi, there, Surrender Monkeys!) and so forth, but thought I'd mention the whole thing here in case there are any lurking two-stroke SAAB fanatics around.  Also, be warned that any discussion of engine swapping might very well generate amusement, but I'm firmly committed to keeping the Mighty Three.  And the roof rack.  Definitely the roof rack.

That is bucketloads of awesomeness topped with a cherry!  A Saab triple should be allowed to run straight pipes.

Doug Chase of Chase Race built our beautiful cage.  He's not just a Surrender Monkey, he's also a rally car builder of notable repute.  Anyone who looks at our Peugeot's cage comes away impressed.

Good luck!  More Saabs need to be in Lemons.

There is a Saab 96 specialist in your backyard...well under the flight path of SEATAC.  Call JVAB Imports and ask for John: 1-206-431-9696.  He might be a little groggy since he just got out of the hospital from a knee replacement last week.

Head over to www.rallyanarchy.com and look for Seattle based Robert Gobright who just bought a 96 for rally this year along with Jason who rallies one out of TX: http://www.rallyanarchy.com/phorum/read … 045,page=1 Both are great guys who would be happy to help you.  For the cage in your area I would go with Dave Clark Motorsports.

Thanks!  The thing on top's actually an upside-down surplus arctic survival sledge, though, not a cherry.

The stock two-stroke exhaust is not much different.

Thanks for the tips, and to squirrelly_z600, too-- I had not heard of JVAB Imports.  So far these all seem to be V4 people, but I'd guess there's a fair amount of overlap.

John has a v-4 in his car but was a professional motorcross rider in Europe for years so he knows 2-stroke well.  He has encyclopedic knowledge of obscure Swedish crap that nobody else cares about anymore wink  Ya gotta call him, and he will talk your ear off with old stories, but it's worth it.

Well, yeah, that 38 hp has to come from somewhere, after all.  Besides, the torque figures are legendary....
