Topic: Team Member RANT thread

This is the thread where you bitch about team members. You know...let it out.

Member 1: My brother, so you know how that goes. NEVER listens. I usually have to redo or fix whatever he does, such as the light wiring he cut for no reason. Never wants to pay for anything because he thinks sponsors are chomping at the bit to throw money into our pile of purple poop.

Member 2: Good at standing around talking. Has no mechanical ability. Is always too broke to contribute money. When I say "it's time to buy tires", I guess it's a sign for him to buy another Toyota that doesn't run and never will.

Member 3: Same as above, but with more money and connections. He is Mr. Popular and is never around.

Member 4: Seems OK, but due to bad luck, never seems to be around when I need him.

Member 5: Couldn't ask for more from this guy, but he lives 80 miles away.

Member 6: Also, I am an asshole.

For the Craptation we have four committed guys who all wrench and pay their bills on time.  I couldn't be happier.   Oh wait, I posted this in the wrong thread.  tongue

Really good team members on dysfunctional teams tend to get stolen by teams who have their shit together, so do what you can to keep the valuable guys/gals happy!

Re: Team Member RANT thread

My only team member problem is driver 4 keeps moving out of state, losing job, exploding, getting amnesia and not knowing how to drive, or thinking we were joking and made up this whole Lemons thing.

Re: Team Member RANT thread

Schumacher Taxi has 4 car owners and about 15 drivers.  Everyone has thier moments.

I wish I were joking but we have a car owner who disappears (no phone, email, forum posts, nothing) for months on end.

We have a driver who doesn't drink.

One of our drivers disappears whenever it's time to work on the car - either prepping the car or at the race when we're broke.

I'm an asshole - I like the hurry up and wait approach to car prep while other like to do things "just in time."

The one thing that keeps the team happy is that we don't have money issues.  Everyone is paid up (including car prep, transportation, race gas, and entry fee) once we are accepted to a race.

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

We had the same thing: One driver would show up at the track late leave early and disappear after his turn at the wheel. Drove me nuts when he would show back up and ask me if I needed him! We don't need him anymore. He never showed up to work on the car, (wait once for an hour) which is pretty funny cause he got out of the car at Sears and asked where the oil pressure gauge was. (Ummm.. where we left it.... on the dash!)

I'm an asshole too - I ask $500.00 per driver to drive and pay the rest out of my own pocket because I really want to race. Try getting that out of anybody when it comes time to pay up.

I have to admit it is really nice when a driver pulls out money and asks what can I do to help.

Re: Team Member RANT thread

Key problem is most "car guys" and wanna-bes are cheap lazy pricks. Its amazing how fast folks disappear when its time to write the check too. I had my first work day with my new team a few weeks ago, and it was a revelation. Couple quick ideas then everybody dug in and "got er done".. Was a refreshing change - I have nothing to complain about smile

If I can find a cage fabber that wants to drive my prepped Lex, I'll have another car ready to go too smile

Re: Team Member RANT thread

My rant for last year's team is that out of 5 drivers, only 3 of us were around to build the car.  The other 2 lived 2500 miles away and flew in for the race.  That didn't leave us much manpower to build a 35 year old shitpile barn find that needed every component to be repaired.  Luckily, we picked up a crew member who helped us out a lot.  He lives in Canada, so crossing the boarder for a few hours after work wasn't worth the trouble, so he only came on weekends.  He had never worked on a car before, but the extra set of hands was a big boost.  The other problem is that all of us have similar skills.  The perfect team would have an electrical whiz, a fabricator/welder, a team manager, and a few good wrenchers.  We had three wrenchers and a green helper with no tow rig and no trailer.   No trailer really sucks!

The two guys who flew in for the race never got their hands dirty and left right after the race without as much as helping us tear down the awnings or loading the tools.  Needless to say, they are not on the 2010 team.

Our noob has rejoined us a driver this year and we will go with a 4 man team unless we find a fabricator with a truck and trailer who has lots of spare time and money.  big_smile

The 2 guys who flew in for our Infineon race were awesome, helped out tons. We'd have them back in a heartbeat, if they could swing it.

One of the two was a really good guy and tried hard to "get it".  The other whined all weekend and left in a huff.  We slept at Nelson Ledges in a skanky 80's camper with no heat.  They stayed at a bed & breakfast 30 minutes from the track.

The team captain of "Pendejo Engineering" has the fabrication skills of a 2nd grader, poor driving ability and is entirely unclear in his orders to the rest of the team. This results in a state of general disorder and a poor race finishing position. Team captain then gets drunk and beats the team members for their poor performance.

I shall model my captaincy after this great man!!!

My brother (team member #2) just went on tour w/ a couple of bands.  I won't see him much for the next 12 months.

Team members 3+4-  I sent an email last week asking for 500 +250 total/peoples curse damage deposit and have heard crickets chirping ever since.  I'm waiting patiently for another week or so as #3 runs a race shop and also is running the Subaru continental cup team, so he may be insanely busy.  I never met #4, but he runs w/ #3.

Sounds like me!  I have zero mechanical ability.  I have trouble replacing the bag in my vacuum cleaner.

I admit it: my role is "the guy with the truck."  And someone else has a truck this round.  I'm doomed...

Re: Team Member RANT thread

Wow I am really lucky. The only issue I had was with the car build 2 years ago. There were different ideas on how the car would be used when not running Lemons races. But it was solved when I put more $$ into the car than the others.

As far as drivers, all the drivers I have had have been great. Cautious making sure that every one gets their turn driving. Helping out at the track and at the garage. We do have a few drivers that are more mechanically inclined than the others, but still every one helped.
Since we are running more races this year due to the other crap can race I actually have 2 drivers on rotation. ( finances are the main concern, I have always been paid for the events. If they cant afford 1 race they sit it out) I am really lucky that I actually have drivers waiting to join our team.  But then I also make sure they are going to get what they signed up for. We do our best to make sure the car is prepped. Bring out tons or spare parts so that we can fix anything but a blown engine. I feel we are a well prepared team, and because of this the drivers want to be on the team.  Not that I am implying that any one else is not prepared.
I dont have my brother on my team but I do have my wife. She has driven in all 4 of the past events. Yea things can get stressful but having her buy in is great. I dont need to justify work on the car, she gets it.

Like some of the other teams I am getting a 2nd car ready. However I dont plan to run 2 cars at one event. I want to have a spare in case we toast on car we dont have to rush to get it fixed for the next race. We just take the other car out and use it. Plus the 2nd car is a chopped 69 Bug.. so we are going more for the IOE than the win.. Its for fun. a top 10 finish would be nice. But the time behind the wheel is why we are there.

my 2 cents.

EuroTrash E30 - Lemons South 08 (cooling probs) 24th /CMP  Spring 09 (fuel tank damage) one day on track 69th /Lemons South 09 (Hit by an Escort) 27th

Re: Team Member RANT thread

Team members actually pay their share somewhere? Hmmm. I got my brother to pay his 1/4 of the driver's and car entry fee, but the rest ended up on me for the schitroen. And last year when we ran the mini with our club members, I fronted the entry money and even the money for his fire gear so this one kid could run with us. Then another team member paid for his entry fee (reimbursed me) and another member gave the kid the money for the fire gear to give to me. In exchange, he was to work it off by doing stuff around that guy's house. Well, he took the money, worked of the debt to the guy who gave him the money, and never gave said money to me. He still has no job, has made no effort to me, yet has a new cell phone, can afford to take his girlfriend out, pay for gas and insurance... yet he won't even let me repossess" his unpaid-for fire gear to sell off and reclaim some of my money...

The last drivers of the Team Bean mini, though, paid up when I asked and paid for their share of the transport. Now THAT's what I like.
