Topic: *My custom tool* for my '90 Miata; timing belt / water pump and...?

[Edit: pics of the holding tool I made in a new post 03/22]

A leak started under the water pump / thermostat area, right in the center front. So I got the water pump / timing belt kit, and I'm finally getting to it after two years daily driving it - never revving over 5k rpm, though.

WHILE I'm in there, any suggestions as to _other_ favorite routine maintenance jobs that might get missed with a limited kit like that?

I bqusted the two bolt heads off of the bolts holding the thermostat housing together; that delayed me completing this. My tools are not organized, so I wound up buying more tools I already had, but couldn't find. Temp sensor was corroded, and broke with almost no effort when I removed the connector; there's a lot of corrosion in that area.

When I took off the top timing belt cover the belt looks new. No wear I can see, either on the ribs or the edges of the belt, and no cracks. But I have no idea how old it is, either; so I'm replacing it.

More background:
I'm second owner, manual, A/C (needs recharge, at least), no hard top, clear title. Probably sat for most of 5 years, with only about 500 miles over that time. Originally had 12 and 14 year old tires, so I've been babying it.

When sold to me, 3 miles more than previous year's inspection sticker showed, and had just had an oil change - totally clean oil on the stick. So I think the previous owner took care of it.

Rusty rockers behind the door on both sides, and door bottoms, and there are repair attempts that show; this isn't a concourse Miata.

Upper radiator house still has a label on it. The other hoses look in decent condition; no leaks I can see other than the one I mentioned, and no cracks. Screw-type house clamps on the upper _and_ lower radiator hoses. The smaller hoses have what look like original spring clamps on them.

Oil mist residue under the hood; looks like it's coming from the plug thingy on the valve cover (EGR?). Generally clean in the engine compartment otherwise; never any oil drips where I've parked it.

Adding a cup of coolant a month for so long eventually turned into a pint (an hour / 40 mi.), which was manageable; until the one day the coolant (what was by then just distilled water) just constantly dribbled out as it sat, until it was more than a gallon low. That's when I parked it.

In case you didn't already know:  look up crank pulley issue on that year.  I forget the details but I think you need to loctite the keyway or something when reassembling.  I think there nay be a TSB.

(Oh, crap!) THANK YOU!!! I DIDN'T know about that. And I'm _SO_ glad I asked.

I was anticipating something like 'grab this little $20 connector, make / buy this bracket, get this $4 tube of something, and move this over here; it'll be easier, more reliable, and save you money' (which was actually a thing - different vehicle). Not something as important as you mentioned.

Time to pick a Miata forum, and go further down the rabbit hole (I'll start with the newcomer section).

I already have a lot to look at when the rain stops, to see what has already been done, if anything. And probably a few more things to buy.

Conveniently: it's nighttime now; and, it's raining.

Thanks again!

Get one of these, it makes it so much easier to keep timing: https://flyinmiata.com/products/flyin-m … generation

The car will probably need plugs and wires, the wires are a regular wear item.  Stick with NGKs for both.

If I still have it 60k mi. from now, that looks like a good purchase.
Sounds like NGK juice for Miata is like:

OEM ignition coil for Honda Civic.

That's more like what I was expecting.

I'll be looking at the woodruff key area closely; serial number is below 108,xxx.

Should I replace the camshaft seals, or is this a reasonable and expected amount of grunge after 157k?

Gonna charge the A/C system this year and see if this works:

Some of the debris from the thermostat bolts (that'll be gone before putting together again) :https://i.postimg.cc/TYC7cKy7/20240312-175021.jpg

But it's still finished here ;-)

Re: *My custom tool* for my '90 Miata; timing belt / water pump and...?

New gasket for this(?):

Re: *My custom tool* for my '90 Miata; timing belt / water pump and...?

It doesn't look too bad, for sitting for probably 5 years. I've put - I think - 8k miles on it since purchase.

Any other suggestions? [snip]

Flying Miata is out of stock of their crankshaft holding tool:

, so I made my own, which I think is an improvement on the original; but then again, I only have the one NA type:

Found this pic on Facebook - that washer-and-bolt assembly is a great idea.

Re: *My custom tool* for my '90 Miata; timing belt / water pump and...?

I had a problem getting the crankshaft pulley off; I didn't think it would be something like 'sintered' aluminum, and as soft as it was. So, since I cracked the back lip of the pulley, can I just round it out (since I can't find one online - the dealer is next tomorrow morning)?

So, just how 'boned' am I (if I can't find another) [Partsgeek is the 4th site I looked at, and they had it - the 'crankshaft _gear_'] :

Less importantly, I think I need new spark plugs:
