Topic: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to say Hola. I raced a couple of times in '16 & '17 with a team out of Fort Collins, CO called the Furious Four. In an old '81 Toyota Ceilca known as the Gashole. We ended up winning the IoE one of the years, which was pretty cool. Anyway, that team owner kinda bowed out due to life. I attempted to buy the car but to no avail.

So, I started looking and picked up a 176,000 miles 2003 Subaru WRX in early 2023 and started disassembling it in May. Car had been totaled due to hail damage and had a tree limb fall on the hood. And, with all Subaru's, it came with a plethora of goodies.  We are prepping this car to debut at the BFE in June '24.

My new team will be a family affair. With my wife, daughters, brother and possibly my dad driving along with me.

I've been taking pics all along the way of the build and would love to do a build thread as soon as I figure out how to post pics.

Thanks,
Keith

You'll need at least two posts.

I use 'postimages.org'; and, I've created a free account so that I may control the pics after uploading. As a 'guest', I wasn't able to find out how to delete them after uploading.

On that site, when you select a pic for posting, they have several options to copy code to direct people to that image.

I use their "Hotlinks for Forums" button. There's also an option for 'thumbnails', but for me, they're a little small for phone access.

When you're logged in, you can copy other posts' text.

If you search this forum for pics, and you find a user who uses your hosting provider, you'll see the code used, and you can use that as a guide to post yours.

Nah is turbo more likely to throw a rod or have turbo failure.  2.0 doesn’t blow headgaskets often. Also oiling issues.  That year has a shitty oil pan and pickup, starves in hard cornering and burns oil.  Would benefit from 2006+ oil pan and pickup.

We completely friction welded a rod to the crank only 1/2 qt below full dot on our na.  Swapped to 06 pan and added an audible oil alarm.  We don't hit the alarm until 1.5 it's low with the new pan but just try and pit early for oil.

That's a lot of mileage for a wrx, best of luck!  At least the 2.0 seems to outlast the 2.5.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

Yep. I pulled the trigger before I realized that the WRX's of this year has oiling , cooling, fueling, blow by and transmission issues. I've done my best to ignore those things.

Standard Subaru procedure in place.

Bring an engine hoist, a head gasket set, and a set of rosary beads.

Maybe research swapping to a non-turbo, base-model engine for scientific purposes.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

Car was not great but not terrible(at this point). Car came packed with all types of stuff. Previous owner started buying stuff to fix the car but ended up buying a newer STI and never got this one back together. Car has a Colorado, Virginia and Florida history. That'll come into play a little later.

This is appx. Feb/March 2023

So lets unpack. We'll start inside the car.

You can also edit your own posts, including the subject; though I'll say: it's not always straightforward. Sometimes for me, I'll try to submit the edit, and my display flashes and fails to upload. Sometimes it works - dunno.

The edit date/timestamp shows, but the post keeps its position in the order originally posted - it doesn't refresh the thread into the 'Active topics' list.

Here is the interior after it was unloaded. Normal wear and tear for it's age.

Now lets move on to the trunk where the rest of the spares are.

On top is a beat to crap used intercooler. This and the hood scoop were purchased by the previous owner after the tree limb fell on the hood and scoop. It cracked the hood scoop and punctured the original intercooler.

The other 2 Rota wheels are in the trunk. Also, super cheap F&R strut tower braces and some STI chassis brace/bar.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

March/April I got the car registered and drove it for a month just to verify the car had minimal issues. I had to rebleed the clutch as it was dragging. It ran and drove well, no major issues and I ended up putting about 1,000 miles on it.

Next up, Disassembly! Lets build a racecar...
