Topic: PRO teams

It would certainly help with "exposure", but does having teams with unlimited resources, huge, experienced crews, and uber-transporters ultimately help or hurt the series?

Yeah baby!
#47 Impreza:  2009 Lamest Day; 3rd / 2010 Capital Offense; 4th (with a blown head gasket) / 2010 New England something or another; 60 somethingth, f'n wheel bearing / 2010 Lemons Fall South 77th out a 101 - all 10 feet shot off! Then there was Miami...

Re: PRO teams

No, I think it's cool.  They still have to get through BS inspection.  As long as they "get it", they are welcome in my book.

I assume you are referring to a certain NASCAR team at this weekend's ChumpCar race?

Re: PRO teams

It doesn't matter.

Everyone still has $500 to work with.  If they go over, they have to face the same judges that we all do and they have a keen nose for ferreting out cheating.  Chump has Tony Steward running at VIR this weekend - and reports from the track are that both thier cars have lost engines.

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

Re: PRO teams

Yeah... "real" race drivers tend to forget that you can't push a Lemons car 100%... they need to think back really far when they raced junkers... if they ever did that is...

Oh crap, that would be too funny! He would have a cow trying to race with all of us. It would be interesting to see what he has to say after a few hours behind the wheel.

Re: PRO teams

IF a bunch of Nascar guys show up to a Lemons race......it would be VERY interesting to see how many penalties they get....  I would venture a guess that nascars "rubbing is racing" theory would not translate well to Lemons.....  Perhaps a new record for black flags?

Re: PRO teams

Depends... If the "Pro" team is fully funding and supporting it as opposed to just people from a pro team just participating, yeah, they'll kick your ass most likely. Even on the same budget, somebody that knows what they are doing with the machine and how to run a team will get up front pretty easy.

Rob,

My best freind was (is? )a frat brother of Dave.  they got together recently, I forget why.  Jim tells me he's a really nice guy.

On another note, I'm looking at buying a mister 2 and would like to pick your brain, or what you may have left of it...

I'm guessing that by your response on the forum that you were not able to participate this weekend?

Not a bunch but one is coming to Buttonwillow....maybe more than 1 if those other guys had fun this weekend.

Re: PRO teams

Re: PRO teams

I expect some of their contracts may prohibit participating in other races, to avoid injury that would keep them out of their regular races. Somewhat like actors when a production's insurance prohibits things like riding a motorcycle until the shoot is done. Do you remember Dale Jr's fire at Infineon a few years back?

Re: PRO teams

what would a big $$ team have to gain beating a bunch of idiots with $500 crapcans

i think its AWESOME and i know exactly why they are there

you ready for this, its revolutionary i know!!

fun with cars!!!

you cant imagine half the rings you jump thru at pro level stuff, i bet crapcan racing becomes a new instant vacation for them and will probably pick up steam for these guys. who are just like us but have talent.

Re: PRO teams

We rented VIR several years ago for a media launch and when we arrived, the NASCAR teams were all there finishing up their testing for  the upcoming Sears Point race.  We chatted with quite a few of them and they were all great guys.  The majority of them are car guys like the rest of us and were just as excited to see what cool toys we brought as we were to see theirs.

I could totally see a few more NASCAR guys coming out to play with the crapcan racers.  Kenny Schrader, like Tony Stewart, will race anything, anywhere if he has the time.

Re: PRO teams

I like the idea of top-level racers coming to dice it up with us!  I think it brings exposure that is good for all of us.  Plus, how awesome is it to race against (and potentially pass and beat) the guys who get paid to do this?!

With that said, I don't think that just having pro drivers does anything for your team except guarantee that Judge Jonny and Phil are going to scrutinize the living hell out of your car.  Remember the Channel 4 News team at ThunderHill '09?  All drivers were professional drifters.  They ended up with several penalty laps and finally had to put it on the trailer before the end of the race, which brings me to my second reason that pros won't come in and dominate.

Lemons racing is different from top-level racing (duh, but hear me out).  It requires a different skill set, not entirely, but you need a few more tools in your box.  Guys at the apex of motorsports pretty much all drive the same: really really well, with clearly interpretable intentions that allot for clean driving at 10/10ths.  Us?  Not so much.  You can't just throw a guy who always knows what the driver in front will do (silly things like hitting apexes and such) against a pack full of parade floats and nimrods who have never been on a track before and expect him to do well.  He'll no doubt be quick, but my crystal ball shows something black and rectangular waving at him.

Lemons is its own form of "racing" (in theory).....its mostly an excuse to get out for the weekend and hang out at the track, driving a car (when it runs) and having fun....

I also think "Pro" drivers will have LOTS of problems...& I would imagine the whining in the penalty box will go to a whole new level....its bad enough with amateur SCCA-NASA-PCA guys...imagine a "PRO" athlete attitude...  Personally I would love to see an ego-centric driver like Danica or Marco that are clearly full of themselves have to "explain" why they hit the weinermobile in the penalty box...it would be HILARIOUS...so just like most new to Lemons drivers with previous "race" experience there would be a learning curve....some figure it out and "get it" others get pissed and get sent home....

But it would be cool to see a real NASCAR crew do a pit stop on some $500 yank tank.....

those guys showed up to have fun and party, and chose to go home after they got what they feel was picked on, and hearing their side of the story as well i feel they may have been singled out.  they really did show up to have fun and their car was a pos built from a trash pile of parts they collected off of a forum.

in the context of ''pro teams that wanna show up and dominate'' they do not fit that bill.  all of them have 18wheelers and they specifically wanted to just hang out and party, and thus didnt bring that stuff.

not trying to beat a dead horse, but dont lump them in that pile.

I have yet to see a pit crew of 7+ guys all wearing identical outfits rip off a pit stop in under 20 seconds.....

But it would be hard to get the driver out in time too!!!

I am quite proud of our pit team.....we get it done....good enough for Lemons anyway....

Re: PRO teams

Jay Leno was at the first Lemons with a fiero and blew it up .

As for the pros .
there has been a bunch of desert racers who have won Baja 500 and 1000 .

The Faustest team is the mechanics for Tanner Faust, drift and Rally champ.

I think all the Pro drivers are nothing to worry about because they will blow up .

If they get  blackflagged the judges will have them out forever .

We all get it done.  My point is that you may have seen a NASCAR crew (or at least guys who work on a NASCAR crew) over the wall and never known it.  As you point out, if you have to get the driver out to refuel, then the stop is going to take longer.  And without the dry break rigs that are using on PRO cars, you aren't going to see gallons dumped in in under 20seconds.
