Topic: 110 lap stint!

I was just poking around on MyLaps and just for shits and giggled I thought I would see how far other teams went on stint.  We usually make it around 40 laps.  To my surprise the winners in a Nissan Sentra went the first 105 laps without a driver change,  Holy stints batman! So more poking around and it seems like Volvos with powerful V8 engines are the fuel economy masters lap 36-146 without a stop.  That is like 330 miles.  That thing must have comfortable a seat!

Re: 110 lap stint!

Wow! I haven't checked mylaps, but simple math puts our longest stint somewhere around 46 laps. The starship was NOT good for our fuel economy...

Re: 110 lap stint!

When I first saw that form eye level I thought you had lost it.  But after seeing it from the top of my trailer it all made sense.  Not a perfect wing but probably a bit of down force. Pity about the drag penalty, but awesome job on the starship.  Camera position was good too!  BTW we are at 4.5 PSI boost and she keeps goin! 15 psi of stock boost was not so reliable.

its not that great. and a big fuel cell let us do that too

Re: 110 lap stint!

Wow... even with a 24 gallon fuel cell that means you're getting about 14 miles per gallon which under race conditions is remarkable!

Our 3600lb (without driver or fuel) V-12 Jaguar burned half a gallon or gas per lap. So to do 105 laps we'd need a 50 gallon fuel cell... too bad Jay won't let us install a monster like that.

Re: 110 lap stint!

The Death Cab's longest stint was less than hour and 45 minutes, which is what, 41-45 laps?  Which volvo with a V8 went 110?  That seems absolutely impossible to me.

Wow
I thought running that big of a car would be Cool.  But the fuel cost alone would kill the budget.  Looking the the Volvo it seems the V8 does a bit better. Maybe a v8 swap?

Sure we could swap a V8 and probably gain reliability, economy and maybe even gain some power.

But... this is Lemons... it's about overcoming absurd challenges... like getting a $500 british car complete with a V-12 and Lucas EFI system to complete an endurance race.

I agree, to the point of the spirit of the race. But I also like to spend more time driving than working on the car. BTW ,I really love the look of your car with the Large tires.

Our team is also going Low tech. We will be trading in the BMW E30 for a chopped 69 VW bug for the Dec FL event.  But we are going Low HP and No weight, we hope to have the car down to 1200 lbs.

How many drivers do you have? We have 5 and realize this isn't ideal if we want to win, but frankly we're doing this for fun and have had the same group of drivers for several races. I'm not willing to screw any of my drivers out of a stint they've paid for. Having said that, our longest stints were about 45 laps too.

Re: 110 lap stint!

We have a 5 gal fuel cell in the Angry Hamster Z600 and can do about 12 laps on a tank. Makes for a lot of driver changes and little or no chance of being competitive in the overall.

Having said that it really didn't matter until recently since we typically break down before we run out of fuel. Coming in to Goin' for Broken we were struggling to string together 10 laps without a mechanical failure

At least we are having fun!

Re: 110 lap stint!

maybe the rulemakers should set the number of pitstops/driver changes per race , that would take gas mileage out of the picture.   ralph

a better idea is a limit to 20 gal of fuel, if upgrading to a fuel cell.

the limit is already set at 24 gallons otherwise I'd install a 42 gallon tank

Re: 110 lap stint!

I don't think there were 2 Volvos with V8's at Thunderhill.  The death cab of course.  I am just going by the mylaps lap times.  According to that database the first stint was 36 laps (sounds about right) and the next time a pit stop looking lap  (6+ minutes) was on lap 146.  Maybe I just missed it or there is a glitch with the data.

I digress. This time a question.  When pitting....You go in the pits and do whatever. When you go back out down the hot pits and pass the start finish line, (wait for it, here comes the question) do you get scored for the lap or not until next time around?

Question #2.  Is it legal to put a fuel cell to feed the stock tank?  Like a supplimental fuel tank or a reserve tank?

Thanks

Re: 110 lap stint!

I heard that one of our drivers got in the car at 11:00am on Saturday and got out at 6:00pm.  That's what I heard...

A guy did the whole 25 Hours of Thunderhill solo - took him a couple of attempts as the first time he got such back sores from the seat he had to quit

But the vehicle I want to race comes stock with a 27 gallon tank.  Does this mean I'll be forced to swap it out?

If it is a safe, stock tank, just forget what the exact tank size is during tech.

Fill it with ping pong balls to bring it to the required size.

Which Volvo was running stints this long?

How can you view individual results?  All I can find on mylaps is overall results.

Re: 110 lap stint!

I you go to mylaps and register your transponder, you can get all your lap times. There is a little pulldown that allows you to compare your lap times with any onter car and it highlights the difference in red (if slower) and green if faster.  Kinda cool.  If you look through the row of lap times it is pretty easy to see a pit stop lat, it does not start with 2:xx   more like a 9:xx.

Re: 110 lap stint!

Thanks...that's what I figured.  I don't have a transponder though.

Re: 110 lap stint!

There were two volvos with V8's.  One was the Death Cab and the other was a chevy powered Volvo that caught fire early on Saturday but was back running on Sunday, again...

I see what you mean in the mylaps results, but that sure doesn't correspond with reality.  I don't understand why the pit stops are "under-reported".  We did 5 driver changes (and refuelings) on Saturday and 4 on Sunday, no stint longer than 1:45-1:50.

The actual timing loop is under the checkered start/finish line (not in front of the start/finish flag stand) which is AFTER pit out.  So, to answer your question, you are scored for EVERY lap - it doesn't skip one when you pit.  However, the way pit exit/entrance was set up at Buttonwillow last year, you DID miss a lap every time you pitted (when you rolled through the paddock, you missed the timing loop) which made frequent stops a big penalty.  Infineon has a timing loop through the hot pit at Start/Finish, so you don't miss a lap there, either.

Cheers,

Dean
