Topic: B-Pillar Removal

Our car is a 4-door and the driver's window is pretty tight to squirm through, especially wearing a HANS device.   We're wondering if we'll catch any heat for cutting the Stock B-Pillar out to make exiting the car easier.  We're building a really strong DOM cage and the main hoop is just about 6 inches back from where the B-Pillar is anyway, and we have the car's stock roof tied into it with some steel tabs.

Any thoughts?  I've seen cars with NO tops and just cages, so I'm guessing it will be okay.  I just want to make sure before we do any cutting since UN-cutting tends to suck.

Thanks
Tom

Cut away.  There is nothing stopping you.  Just make sure you leave no sharp edges that could rip a suit.

Re: B-Pillar Removal

I had a similar question regarding the RCC cage design and the need to notch the B pillar to accommodate the NASCAR door bars. here is the meat of my exchange with Jay on the topic:

Hello Jay

I spoke to Jim Whitley at Roll Cage Components about a cage for our 240SX. He told me that in order to accommodate the NASCAR style door bar that we would have to notch the B pillar on the drivers side a bit. He told me that he had discussed this with your organization (and the Chump guys) and that this was approved. Just wanted to confirm this, and also see if this is a potential area where the rules may change in the future. I prefer the NASCAR style bars to provide more space between the occupant and whatever he is driving into, but obviously I want to ensure compliance with the rules and would change to a different style cage if necessary. Thanks Jay

Hey, John: That's fine, as long as the pillar has most of its structure intact it'll pass tech--a little notching is not a problem.--JL

It sounded to me like he wanted the B pillar intact.

Re: B-Pillar Removal

It sounds like you are talking about the B pillar below the beltline and the OP is talking about above the beltline.  I can see why you'd need the pillar intact where the door latches, but I still think that the upper half *shouldn't* need to be there assuming the door closure area is still structurally sound.  You might need to tie the lower half into your cage hoop to keep it strong.

Best to ask Nick or Jay to get a certain answer.  Send pics with the email.

This car has passed tech twice.

The B pillars are cut at the windowline and welded to the cage. No C pillars. Or doors. Or roof. Or trunk. Or fenders. Or hood...

Re: B-Pillar Removal

Yes, we will leave the pillar intact up to the bottom of the window opening.  Plus, we are tying the lower half of the B-Pillar into the Nascar style door bars for extra support and the main hoop is not far behind where the pillar is and is tied in to the roof.  We only want to remove the upper portion because the window opening on a 4-door Chevette is tiny and after flaming bits of poorly designed mechanical components set the cockpit ablaze, we want to be able to exit with ease.

It sounds like it's probably acceptable,  but I'll wait for a little more input before we turn the sawzall loose.

Don't pick on the Chevette.  It's had a rough life.

Re: B-Pillar Removal

Four-door, hard-tops, don't have b-pillars.
