Topic: Send me your tech failure pix!

Hey guys--

We're working on a PDF tech guide with a bunch of images of common tech failures.

I'm looking for images of bad cages, improperly wrapped belts, hooptie exhausts, etc. Anything that has or would fail Lemons tech. Post in this thread or email them directly to me: nick at 24hoursoflemons dot com.

Thanks much!

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

Its already fixed..  But the holes in the firewall after the heater hoses are removed. They must be covered with a metal plate.  I can send you a photo of the fixed area?

EuroTrash E30 - Lemons South 08 (cooling probs) 24th /CMP  Spring 09 (fuel tank damage) one day on track 69th /Lemons South 09 (Hit by an Escort) 27th
MSR Tx, 10 2oth, no issues other than rain. /CHump Homestead Miami 10- 2nd place.

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

Yeah, "fixed" stuff is good too--we're aiming for a pretty clear "bad vs good" layout--something that's a little easier to digest than reading the rulebook.

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

At the CMP race last weekend, the most common tech failure was a misplaced harness bar.  We loaned our welder to 4 or 5 teams to fix that.  The big thing is the belts should come off your shoulders and be between horizontal or 15 degrees below horizontal.  There were a lot of teams that had their harness bar way too low.  I've seen a good illustration somewhere but can't seem to track it down.

I'm making a cage this weekend.  I'll see if I can take pictures of good and bad harness bar locations.  Bonus - It's the Wartburg.

We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

Yeah, our seat isnt mounted yet so I guess I'll bring it along so we have a general idea.  smile

It's one of the requirements that I sent you for the cage specifically for this (crossbar height) reason.

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

The infamous SVX cage.  It was my first Lemons and my team assured me it would pass tech.  I'm pretty sure they were trying to kill me.  This was AFTER we "fixed it".  Jay wasn't digging it so much.

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

Here's some nice ones for ya.

Crappy welds.

Two piece diagonal bar going over the passenger side for some unknown reason.

And bends in the rear diagonal bars with no backing plates.

While I can see the bend, I also see something that looks like a backing plate too.

It looks like it, but it's not, that's directly on the sheet metal.

This is also good example of a harness bar that's much too low.

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

I should Point out that the cage pictured by Mr. bass has passed tech 3 times without any issues.

The bends on the backstays are traditionally a no-no but after involving the cagebuilder with Jay & Dan the cage got a pass. I have the emails to prove it.

I've had people in tech (especially the extra strict gingerman personnel) as well as other teams comment that the quality of those welds are excellent when observed in person.

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

It got past tech with a waiver, something you shouldn't need when it comes to safety, and it still stands as a prime example of how not to build a cage for Lemons.

They don't look that bad in the photos either.  I figured that it was a photo thing...

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

We had issues with our Auto Power bolt in cage this past weekend.  Eventually it was given the green light.  To avoid this issue next time we are just going to weld the damn thing in.

how can you tell that with no seat mounted in it? i am working on a car now for the july 10th race in colorado and the harness is about there (maybe a little higher but not much) and it crossed right in the harness opening on the seat.

Re: Send me your tech failure pix!

Because the cross bar is lower than the door sills.  If your seat is that low, you are going to have a probelm seeing over the dash.

i guess to me it doesn't look that low. looks about even,or maybe a little lower than the door.  i bet if the seat were in that pic it would be about right. if the doors are that high to you, you must be a short guy....lol

Look at it in relation to the steering wheel.  The bar looks like it is about even with the middle of the wheel.

A pillow from Walmart had to be placed in the seat.
