Topic: Best tire for 225/60-16 cadillac, ordering tomorrow, need help

Hey,

I am debating which tires to buy for a 94 cadillac.  The tire size is 225/60-16.  Figure after all the stripping out the car is probably down to 3200 pounds.

What tires do you guys think would be the best for a race?  Need to order them tomorrow so I have them by Friday.

I was just searching tire rack.  The 4 cheapest choices are:

Fuzion HRi Serv Desc 98H UTQG 400
Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 Serv Desc 98v UTQG 480
Sumitomo HTR Z II Serv Desc 98w UTQG 360
Firestone Firehawk GT Serv Desc 97H UTQG 460

I would go with a lower profile tire. 225/50-16. You'll lower the car about 3/4" while not loosing suspension travel and get a little better gearing for driving out of the turns. Steering response should be better too. The tire in that size would be a Dunlop Star Spec Z1. Works great on our 3100lb  nose heavySHO.

Would I have switch off the factory rims to go with a lower tire?

Those dunlops are too rich for my blood

Don't expect the Fuzions to last more than 8 hours or so.  We had great luck with the HTR ZII at Nelson Ledges AND CMP - about 32 hours of racing on those before they were toast.

Our car's about 800lbs lighter than yours, though...

I was surprised the hankook or kumho didn't make a tire in that size.

Did you find tirerack had the best deals on the HTR's?

I don't think so. They should fit on a 6 to 8.5" rim. A wider rim is better, to a point.

no biggie....get the dunlop direeza star spec Z1 in 225/50-16....cheap at $116 per tire from tire rack and work great in our 3100lb 928....  sure its slightly lower profile, so your speedo won't be accurate (like it works anyway right).....

The 225/50-16 gives you many more options for tires....take a look

really  $116 is too steep...hard to get anything decent for close to that price....

Keep in mind the SHO Sergio is speaking of WON a Lemons race earlier this year AND placed 2nd in another.....  Our 928 never placed "high"....but got around the track pretty good....we both use the exact same tires in similar weight-power vehicles......that is money well spent....  it cost me $775 or something for 6 tires...DONE...that I still run!!!!    For the $30 per tire you save you'll burn through twice as many and spend MORE.....or loose so much grip your sliding all over the track....

I agree, the 'good' tires I got for the Lincoln went greasy so fast it was amusing to watch us go around the track at 90mph sideways in the dry...

+1 on the Star Specs. 1 full race @ MSRH on them in a 2800lb car and they still look brand new. They handled extremely well too.

Yeah - we've found that the higher performance tires have a MUCH higher life expectancy.  We get about 8 hours out of the nearly new parts car street tires that we use.  The Hankook RS2s that I bought last year go for at least 48 hours, if not more.  We haven't killed a set of them yet.

+1 on the Hankook RS2's also consider the Dunlop SP8000....lower wear rating (200) but worked out great.

Oh, and is tirerack the cheapest place going for dunlop's or do you negotiate with a local guy.  If it were michelins I would just go to costco.

I think Tirerack is the sole distributor of the Star Specs. Discount Tire couldn't get them for me. DZ101 or SP 2000E I know nothing.

On heavy cars I've also had good luck with the Goodyear Eagle GS3 - but they are not cheap.

+2 for the star specs.  We have a 4100 pound car with driver and gas and we can normally get 1.5 races out of a set.
