Topic: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

So I'm just gonna start posting our updates and stuff in this forum, instead of the newcomer thread.

We've taken the car drifting a lot lately, and will post about that, but in other breaking news I stumbled upon this little thread about an hour ago, and will have about $10 well spent here shortly.

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

Little updatez;

So last event out we broke our muffler tubing lemons-spec driveshaft in half.  Derrick fabbed up another one and I got it put in last night.

Quality stuff.  Fired it up to make sure the transmission and everything still worked, and also got all the bugs outta the shop.  Twas awesome.

Also got to work on the family's farm truck that sat for 6 years my cousin is turning into a tow vehicle for his toys.  I would'nt be doing my patriotic duty if I didn't post this awesome-mobile.  12v Cummins, has been sitting at the farm for 6+ years.  Runs like a champ.

'Merica.

Also an event popped up that so far has 3k in prizes. I'll probably get stomped on because I'll be in the brat but it should be pretty awesome, and it'll be my 1st competition in almost three years.  It'll be located out at Mineral Wells Airpark on the huge pavement area at the end of Columbia Street and is only $5 to watch!.

If you have any more questions about coming to watch, or if you wanna drive you can find anything out you wanna know at FabricatedMotorsports.com or you can email AaronLosey@mac.com

This'll be a pretty awesome event to check out and have some fun.

I got some more updates I'll post soon.

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

Got to have a little fun today at the shop, my cuzzzz picked up a blower for his Plum Crazy SRT-8 Charger, and we started installing it.

Was a used kit with no instructions, and I'm not gonna lie, I was trying to figure out the oddball design on the "Crank pulley adapter" and need to get a different bolt for it, and we also needed to get some other little tiny things, and I didn't feel like doing all the wiring tonight, so we didn't get it done, but it was a pretty fun/cool project we got to start on late tonight.

Pulled it in around 4'oclock to get started, waited on it to cool off a little bit, and we got some food and stuff, and farted around, and got a decent bit done.  Since its not a racecar we had to spend like an hour taking all the silly factory clips off and a bunch of jib-jab, but made a dent in it pretty well.  All we have left is the wiring and intercooler stuffs after we get a new crank bolt.

Can't wait to finish this, and my cousin is super excited as he's been saving up for this for a while.  It's not a Magnuson but its still pretty cool, we got it used from a shop called Fastlane in Houston, Magnuson is still working on CARB legal stuff and this popped up now, so my cousin jumped on it.  Pretty cool kit although the company went outta business.  Should throw down about 530rwhp when done, with A/C, 4 seats, should be a cool cruiser.  He already has the KW coilovers and other mopar stuff, pretty cool car.  Gotta get the DriveShaftShop axles next so we can take it to the drag strip, but its nice workin on something cool at the shop.

Also got the Brat running again.  Woowoo.

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

So I was at the shop doing something besides organizing today.  Recently me and some friends got the shop next door as well, so now were at 2,000 sq feet.  Been re-arranging and cleaning a lot.

Not today.

Well today, for about 3-4 hours.  Built a ghetto wood tire rack, and organized the new shop.

Then to the American Icon in the making.

Over the last couple days and about 6-8 hours worth of work this is what has happened.

About 3-4 Days ago.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs016.ash2/34140_10100319592505934_8356319_65451585_4531260_n.jpgp

Then i dedided to glance at the rearend, remove the wheels, and gander at it.  I bought a steering wheel at Game Stop from my awesome girlfriend, and it was twofer Tuesday at Double Daves, so needless to say, motivation to work on Camaro wasn't really there.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs127.snc4/36716_10100319643528684_8356319_65453872_2638062_n.jpg

Then today.  Met Derrick up at the shop early evening, and after my friend Jonathan helped clean up the other shop (it is finally all organized mostly, yay) he headed home, and I decided to start cracking on the Camaro.  Removed the front clip, more body stuff, chassis harnesses (which are actually in decent shape and I like the simplicity of the connectors, may reuse) and the glass (40 year old glass is a lot easier to cut out!).  Rust really isn't as bad as I thought.  Still a bit sketchy but not a big deal.  Was able to benchbuild and get a lot of ideas having the car down this far though, pretty stoked about it.

This is how I left it tonight after about 4 hours of on/off working on it.  Most I've done so far.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs126.snc4/36679_10100322061238574_8356319_65537593_670960_n.jpg

I'm excited about this.

As soon as it quits raining the Brat will finally have jumpseats again.

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

Little update on the Camaro, not anything huge yet, still stripping down.

Had to use the plasma cutter (which is soooo awesome) to cut an access hole to get to the subframe washer/bolt dealie, then got that off.  Just been bench-building, and did a 60k service on my friends truck today.

Was tryin to shave some weight, and will be using an OEM Aluminum spindle with some custom control arms, gonna start playing with that tomorrow, as well as the rearend setup a little as well.

This rust is becoming a huge pain, finding all of it is annoying, also looking to take the tub somewhere to have it blasted, am extremely open to suggestions here.

Some pictarz, but not any huge progress.

Mostly bare tub:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs170.snc4/37838_10100324911985654_8356319_65644031_615826_n.jpg

Subframe, with rusted non removable bolts I have to cut out:

Will hopefully get some more progress made tomorrow.  'Tis coming along though.

This is Lemons, not the $200X Challenge. Paint over the rust. We did.

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

If the Camaro is Lemons bound, leave it yellow and make it a Gumball Rally Z28.  Just dress up like Gary Busey and scream constantly.

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

The Camaro is ABSOLUTELY NOT a Lemons car.

Crap-Can racing.  Small back window 2nd gens are Awesome, and hella-expensive.  New Drifting/Street car.

Just another fun project of mine I'm posting updates on.

Didn't get much done today.

Went to Woodlands with my friend Garrett, wound up doing this:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs180.snc4/38344_10100326724523314_8356319_65710133_1405051_n.jpg

I got to take the controls a couple seconds after this picture, and I really wanna learn how to fly.  Its friggin cool.

Spent the hour I was at the shop trying to remove 3 bolts that were stuck in the LCA's.  Big hammer?  Nope.  Sawzall?  Nope.  Had to get pretty creative but eventually got the bolts out of the way and got the LCA's off.  Gotta be up early in the morning so called it a night pretty early.  Madman Derrick is still at the shop working on his super-overcomplicated headers for his silly little woman car.

Derrick is awesome, and had these laying around, which will wind up on the Camaro.  OEM Aluminum Spindles, win.  These are everything I could want designwise, and they're an OEM application.  Win!
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs040.snc4/34374_10100326716264864_8356319_65709858_5468335_n.jpg

Gonna redrille the Vette hubs to 5x114 so I can fit my large quantity of Foose wheels off the 240 on here since they're awesome and free, then we're gonna start mocking up suspension stuffs.  Plan is to run a 18x8 with a 225/235 up front and absolutely no smaller than a 275 out back.  I'd like to run a 235/305+ stagger but theres no way I could afford tires for the thing as is, so I'll just run 275's for now.

Small progress. Not much, but progress none the less.

I also ate steak fingers at Wings N More today.  +20 American points for me.  STEAK FINGERS.

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

Got some progress made tonight.

Cut rust out with the plasma, now to get it blasted, and start patching.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs199.snc4/38307_10100336846423944_8356319_66079404_2692446_n.jpg

Also had to cut some access panels to get the front leaf braket's locknuts, which were just spinning inside the unibody.  Finally got it out, check out this cutting edge technology right here. 40 Year old rusty nuts kept getting caught in my sockets though was kinda annoying

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs083.ash2/37481_10100336828719424_8356319_66078495_3023487_n.jpg

And here's where we're at.  Not one bolt left on the unibody.  Need to blast/prime this thing, kinda wanna dip it but don't know where to go.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs115.ash2/39067_10100336843045714_8356319_66079277_1677694_n.jpg

40 Year old rusty nuts

Hey! I'm only 38!

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

Haha, you're younger than my Camaro!

The Brat's been chillin, but finally found a BUNCH of spare stuff for it for a killer deal last night, so will have some updated on that soon, and finally a tranny to put in.

Said goodbye to the Camaro today for about a week.  They said they wanted to wait till the weather was perfect to do everyting so I just dropped it and told them I wasn't in a hurry.

Re: Rust in the Wind Subaru Brat Updates/Other stuff

Sew, a needle pulling thread, been pretty eventful last couple days, here are highlights and some pics.

- Finished notching the floorboards on the s13.  I can now turn my head all the way around, look every direction, move as much as possible and still fit my hand between the helmet and cage.  It is awesome.  I tried to make it more asthetically smooth but then decided that it is a racecar, and I don't care.  Interior is done until cage is installed, which is awesome.

- Started redoing my S13 dash, had one that was cracked really bad, so i removed all the fake leather stuff, and added America's favorite material for quality body work, BONDO on it, sanded most of it off today and it filled in 99% of the stuff, so I'm gonna plaster some more on and then sand that off and it should be ready for a super professional spray paint job, because this car is only getting the best.

- Needed to buy some trailer locks, stumbled upon this recently opened trailer place in town near my house, and noticed they had jeep style trailer fenders...20 bux later I had the beginnings of our DTM aero/fender flares for the brat.

- Car topped out at 140 today, so I went to Harry's Speed Shop and got some NOS.

- Helper springs (Airbags) for the truck came in today, so need to throw those on.

- Got my Ingersoll 231c PATRIOT EDITION in couple days ago, its heavy, and solid metal the way America should be.

- Got a new sound system from my friend Jonathan, so now I can listen to loud music with quality

- Got the trailer mostly de-stickered

- Unloaded the FC I picked up and now have three spare engines for the Brat, and two spare transmissions.

- Got a sandblaster, its awesome, and makes a huge mess.

I think thats about it.  Been working on random cars a lot so had some money to spend which was nice, although I'd rather be at school this semester.

Here are some random pics of crap I've done in the last week:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs353.ash2/63346_414920142608_178649057608_4265810_8268674_n.jpg

Still need a LOT of trimming/fitment and have to build some stuff for them and cut the back off, but this is this basic idea.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs693.snc4/63346_414920127608_178649057608_4265807_609720_n.jpg

Dash how I left it last night, now its all flat again, hopefully one more bondo plastering will do the trick.

42' Pace Shadow GT, 2003 model.  It is awesome, and I'm super lucky to have it.

I'm 26, and attempting to have a heart attack before I'm 40.  The American Dream.

If you're still reading this you're probably thinking a couple things:

- Mike is all over the place
- Mike is never going to get anything done

Probably accurate.

So two days ago my friend Jonathan showed me a Camaro he found while looking for his own project.  Derrick was offered an e36 project to build for our friend Aaron for the upcoming Fabricated Motorsports 2011 Texas Drifting Series, both were in Dallas, and I have a two-car trailer.

So at 5am Sunday I got home.  Got back to the shop around 3pm and this is what we got.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs125.ash2/39599_10100396259175314_8356319_67925859_2994420_n.jpg

The guy I picked this Camaro up from was a ultra-nice guy.  Check this out, he bought it to build for is SON IN LAW.  Talk about awesome.

Story on the car was a friend of his located it after a local owner of a salvage yard died in Nowhereville, West Texas, an estate sale was had, and this Camaro was supposedly in a building he had for projects that were his own, and it just sat for about 20 years.  It honestly has no rust on it.  The guy told me over the phone that the 1st person who actually saw the car would buy it, and he was 100% honest.  There is a little bit of bondo in some random places but the car is super solid.  Its also a 70 so has the lower floorpans on the rear seat.

This will get me by since the other Camaro is tied up with the BS the sandblasting place tried to pull, so now I can just take them to court and use the legal system to give them the running into the ground they deserve on my time, since I'm in no hurry to get the Camaro back from them now.

Basically its like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhahJVkehUc

Anyways, heres the gameplan.  Found out I'm super lucky and get to go to SEMA this year, as well as XDC Phoenix.  So I'm going to attempt to do these things before SEMA.

-Finish the new LS1 S13 suspension, and fabrication, and attach all body parts to where it just needs a cage, and drivetrain.  Push outside, install car cover.

-Strip parts off of Rx7 I picked up for donor engines for the Brat, then sell.

Post SEMA:
  - Get Camaro to status of just needing a drivetrain and rollcage
  - Build engine that runs on both rotors for the Brat

Want to get all this done by December, then I'll go from there depending on how much work I can do to earn some money between now and then.  We've also got an e36 LS1 project for the 2011 Texas Series, and some other new stuff that will be popping up.  My friend Jonathan also FINALLY got a project car, went with him tonight and we picked up an 85 mustang GT that is now chillin at the shop, gonna help him build that up, which I'm also excited about because I've always wanted to play with building up a Fox, and he is pretty excited about doing it.  Plus its always fun to help one your friends get into cars.

On a side note, my new trailer tows AWESOME with the gooseneck and 3 axles.

So if you're still reading, heres what you're probably thinking now
