Topic: What are you guys doing to keep your car's motor cooler at TH?

I just hacked the cowl out from under the windshield and the hood bracing, too.

The idea is to promote air flow over the top of the motor and out of the hood opening.
Also added some washers to raise the hood a little higher off the hinges.

We've never had any heat issues, so this is 'just in case'.

Re: What are you guys doing to keep your car's motor cooler at TH?

We added 2 reverse scoops in the hood. Spec Miata site has a good article on airflow and cooling.
Here is what I did.  it took the temp down about 25%. The bigger scoop is on the exhaust side so get the really hot air out fast.
We were having some issues at CMP when pushing the car hard.

Re: What are you guys doing to keep your car's motor cooler at TH?

Do the ghetto airflow test before cutting holes to vent the hood.

It's also known as a 'tuft test'.

Get a ball of good contrasting yarn ( not the same color as your car ) or old cassette tape and cut a bunch of 2" pieces.   Tape then onto the car from the front edge to the windshield and up partway so you can see if there is stagnation, reverse flow of good flow.

Re: What are you guys doing to keep your car's motor cooler at TH?

You probably have a high pressure area at your cowl, so raising the hood or cutting out the cowl won't help. Grassroots Motorsports had a great aerodynamics article a couple of months ago and they recommended putting cooling vents close behind the radiator.

Are you guys seriously worrying/complaining about the heat b/c it's supposed to be, what, in the upper 80's?

That's a high pressure zone, you have probably exacerbated your problem, now you're stacking up air behind your radiator.  The low pressure zone is usually 7-14" back from the leading edge of the hood, that's where you make your 'chimneys'

Re: What are you guys doing to keep your car's motor cooler at TH?

Our car has a nice splitter and plenty of airflow through the grill and valance.
With the cowl in place all the air had to 'complete' with the motor and trans and find it way out the bottom of the car.

Now, I'm hoping the fasting moving air over the hood will draw the air under the hood up and over the roof.

It will... if you use a vent like described above.  The base of the windshield/cowl is a high pressure area.  It won't draw any air out, it will force air in.

Re: What are you guys doing to keep your car's motor cooler at TH?

We're going to add a 3/4" Gurney at the trailing edge of the hood and do some aero testing with video tomorrow afternoon.

I've got a lonely country road all picked out...

Naw, 80's would be jacket weather,
try more like the mid 90's

Re: What are you guys doing to keep your car's motor cooler at TH?

I ran the car up into 3 rd gear with video.
Not very interesting.

The yarn strings go over the trailing edge and drape into the cowl area...But then just sit there.
Kind of a dead air zone. They don't wiggle and flutter like when I put the fan along the hood aim at them.

I think the air flow is much higher than on that part of the hood.
I expected the yarn to be moving wildly, as if in a 60 mph wind-stream. ( it was )
Either up and over or into the cowl. They just hung limp after the initial slow wind as I started moving.

My conclusion: no change.

I wanted to put one of these on our e30's roof last year to extract heat over the driver for Buttonwillow but my teammates vetoed the idea.  Some nonsense about safety and aerodynamics, kill joys!

Safety and aerodynamics?  Really?  Have these guys ever seen a Lemons race???

Seriously though, I'm glad it's looking to be in the 90s - if this weren't such a cool summer, it wouldn't be out of the question to see temps above 110 up there in august.  Looks like that worry is gone...  If I didn't just jinx it...

Re: What are you guys doing to keep your car's motor cooler at TH?

I keep seeing all of these modifications to this "hood" concept that you keep talking about.  Why are you still running with one of these "hood" contraptions.  They just lock in heat and provide one more barrier to getting at your engine when something goes boom.

Total success. Car ran very cool the entire weekend.
The needle on the temp gauge was alway below mid way.
I believe the electric cooling fan never came on.

We had a bitchin' Cadillac hood ornament that I liked to point at apexes.

Wouldn't no hood kill the aerodynamics?

You guys cut a slot in the hood? That's what we have and never have any water temp problems.
