Topic: Tyres for MSR event

Hello to all of you......we are a very Rookie team but have been accepted for our first event at the MSR race in Houston in September......would anybody mind telling us just how many rims and tyres you would advise us to take.....assuming we actually last the distance......4 on the car with 8 spares???  Is there a rule of thumb?
Thanks

Re: Tyres for MSR event

Our big heavy SHO can do 2 full races at MSRH on a set of Dunlops. We bring 4 spares just in case. MSRH is easy on tires.

Re: Tyres for MSR event

Thanks Sergio....thats re-assuring.....we have a fairly lightweght BMW so hopefully we'll manage on a spare set!

See you there I hope

Re: Tyres for MSR event

I'm setting the over/under for Mulry to appear in a Houston tire-related tread to be... 35 minutes.  GO!

PS He'll recommend the Falken Azenis RT-615 or the new RT-615K ymmv kthxbai

What car / tyres are you using?

Formerly Lemonade Time Racing.

Re: Tyres for MSR event

Sorry to disappoint, Stevo. Had a doctor's appt. this morning, fortunately it wasn't the kind where he goes all exploratory with the index finger while the patient sings Moon River.

But, um, yeah. A lot of folks there will run either the Falken Azenis RT-615k (which is the new compound) or the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec.

In terms of how many you will need for the race, MSR-Houston isn't hard on tires in a lightweight car. If you start the race on 4 new tires you'll likely have those last the entire race, although if you're experiencing heavy wear on one axle you might swap them front-to-back overnight. If you have a new set of tires on the car and a set of 4 spares you will be quite well equipped, any more that that is just wasting money. If you wanted to save a little cash, you could bring just 2 spares and you'd probably be fine. Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies guys....

We have 6 brand new tyres right now, all Khumho Ecsta I think....the car is BMW 325is but we have lightened it a fair bit and we have some very new drivers and the team guidance is to take it easy and finish!!!

Looking forward to the event!!!

Make sure your alignment is right so the tires wear right.

Good luck trying to take it easy.......

Re: Tyres for MSR event

Lol......it was worth a try!!!

Alignment is on the list, once we find a welder who can help us with the cage!!!

Re: Tyres for MSR event

We generally try to start on new(ish) tires and have a full set of slightly older tires for spares.  That'll do ya at MSR... unless you have a particularly heavy-on-the-tires driver.  Then two full sets of new tires would be prudent.

If you're going to New Orleans in November, double your tire count.  That place kills tires.  Dead.  Like doornails.

Re: Tyres for MSR event

We are trying to find more rims now.....I can't believe its so hard to find crappy old 14" rims for an 87 BMW 4 bolt pattern!!!

New Orleans.....thats would be an adventure.......lets get MSR under our belts first!!!

Re: Tyres for MSR event

Mark,

I'd suggest you look for 15" wheels.

The tire options are marginally better than 14s.

Re: Tyres for MSR event

Also, make sure your offset is correct. I was dumb and managed to buy 2 sets of rims that had the wrong offset for our e30. You can buy spacers, but they aren't cheap.

Thanks guys....didn't realise VW was 4 x 100....

Agree about offset, its a real pain!

Will go and scour craigslist yet again!

Re: Tyres for MSR event

If you decide to run the practice day (I strong suggest doing so), I would have 2 sets of wheels and tires ready to roll. We come with 10 wheels/tires. A used set to practice on and 6 good/new tires to race on for the weekend. MSR is easy on tires. Unless you over-drive the tires or your alignment is shite, you'll be fine. If you come out to CGB in Louisiana, plan on more. The surface is rough on tires and you'll eat through front (mostly front left) tires quickly.

Re: Tyres for MSR event

Honda s are also 4 x 100  and there are aftermarket wheels that have the Ford mustang and Escort pattern and the 4x100 pattern. I have scored a set of 15 and 16s from the junkyard by looking in the ford area.  the fronts still needed 1/4 inch spacers, But the generic non hub centric spacers are $5 each at the local tire shop.
We ran a E30 at MSR last year.  The Khumos were great in the dry, but the 2nd day when it rained we couldnt get any traction.  That is one slippery track after cars have been leaking oil on it.
We are getting ready to run Sebring with the Chump series and will be using the Star Specs. They seem to be one of the best wet - dry tires.
