Topic: What Bodywork Will Tech Allow

We have picked up an E30 and plan on turning it into a crustacean, complete with appendages.  my question is will we be able to pass tech if we have say... 8 ft antennae mounted to the hood sweeping back? and how about a few legs hanging off the car?

It's questions like this that really make me glad I discovered Lemons!   :-)   :-)

Re: What Bodywork Will Tech Allow

The safe bet is to keep anything that might bust off in a collision up above the normal collision zones. Tentacles coming off the roof and upward and outward would probably be fine, but ones that could bust off in side-to-side contact might be a problem. Stuff on top of the car never seems to be a problem.

Just don't hit any bridges or overhead canopies.

Re: What Bodywork Will Tech Allow

I'd try to keep it kinda narrow.  Stuff that goes up and over your car isn't a problem as long as it's secure.  Wide appendages are more likely to get knocked off.

Of course, there was the orange BMW with really wide fender flares at CMP once.  They were made of corrugated plastic sheet, as I recall... and they completed the race mostly intact because they looked like in integral part of the car that you'd get dinged for "contact" if you hit.  Big dangley crab claws probably wouldn't be viewed the same way, though.

Tech is mostly concerned with your "body parts" being secure and non-lethal.  They don't want stuff falling off onto the track if they can avoid it, and they don't want the stuff that does happen to fall off to kill anyone!

At Sears Pointless we asked Jay about contact with the Wienermobile, and he said that it didn't count if it was just bun.

Insert wiener/bun jokes here.

Heh, I said "insert".

I think that the message from experienced lemoners is as follows:  Put it on the car -- bring a sawzall so that you can remove it if tech says so.

Re: What Bodywork Will Tech Allow

As long as it won't fall off the car when rubbin's racin', you're fine.

Our quills were all made of super flexible and unbreakable foam.

We take each construct on its own merits... If we don't like it, we'll make you take it off.  Do a safe and durable job of it and it can stay...    Look at Santa Claus at Gingerman, very well done.

Re: What Bodywork Will Tech Allow

Just tow with an open trailer.  If it doesn't fall off on the highway it's fine.

You are only entitled to the space you occupy.

Re: What Bodywork Will Tech Allow

If you're serious about keeping it on, then put real effort into making it secure.

When we brought the Wienermobile to Sears Pointless we had to promise that NOTHING would fall off the car or else face a 1-hour penalty.  With that promise made, we spent probably 7 hours overall welding that crap back into place before and during the race.

Mostly because Judge Jonny threatened us with a 500 lap penalty if we took anything off.

In short - DO IT!  PLEASE!
