Topic: Gingerman: A Subaru's Perspective
Spirits were high and the overall expectations were even higher. Friday morning's testing proved the car to be fast and well sorted.
Then we went through BS Inspection. 35 lap penalty.
So we go back to our pit space all worked up and disappointed in ourselves and once we cooled down we decided to go back out on track to focus on the race. The last driver went out at the end of the day and ended up having to be towed in because the car was smoking profusely. With the car back in pit we discovered that all of the head bolts had stripped out of the block and caused the heads to lift off the block creating a massive oil and water leak (and cracked radiator). This was the end of our decent 2.2L engine and the start of the 1.8L engine that we brought as a spare. The 1.8L has close to 200k on it and we weren't really happy about having to swap it in but in hindsight it worked out really well.
We started the race way in the back of the pack at 69th and at the checkers on Sunday we finished at 26th. Not bad and we will take it with pride. The Save the Ta-Tas #34 Subaru Impreza wants to thank all the teams that stopped by Friday night with words of encouragement. Race to Failure, Team Fiery Death, Team Reynolds Style, and Team Cardorks were all very helpful and made the weekend very enjoyable. Can't wait to race again in Chicago and see just how far we can get with our little 1.8L.
