Topic: Themes that should NEVER be done?

What themes should be absolutely off limits due to extreme poor taste/global offensiveness?

Will the organizers ever turn away a car in tech? ( have they? )
Telling them to re-theme?

Re: Themes that should NEVER be done?

I've seen the judges send teams to re-theme cars that could have been seen as "hateful" toward a particular race or religion, as well as a lot of cars with themes they're just plain tired of seeing.

I think "political" is okay, but don't let the notion stray into racism or hate for any particular social group.

Don't show up with a camo job.  Don't show up with a tank.  Don't show up with Gulf or any other over-done paint scheme.  Don't show up with an overtly sexual theme that would offend any parents in attendance with their children.

I'm sure there are others.

Be original, be creative, and be full of FUN rather than hate.  That ought to do it.

Well, they had to re-theme the whole Miami race. Does that count?

Ok, I might as well just put this out there.  Its only a matter of time until I convince my team to let me build this.

Do something virulently anti-semitic. I'm certain it would go over quite well.

Has anyone done the John F. Kennedy presidential limo complete with simulated brains and a secret service agent hanging on to the back bumper?

Or do a Ted Kennedy car - making it look like it's been under water or filled with water.

Re: Themes that should NEVER be done?

poor taste or over the top is nearly required...BUT there is a "line".....  Of course only the judges can say what that line is.....I would guess it also varies based on where the race is too....  something that offends racers in the deep south, might not in liberal CA....then again your chances of getting a pit beat down are probably higher in some areas of the country too

Just use the British Top Gear trip through Alabama as an example

Re: Themes that should NEVER be done?

Political is really good if it involves scandal.   The City of Bell police car at Buttonwillow is a great example -- "To Serve And Protect The Highest Paid Politicians".   It had the (former) city manager Rizzo in chains and an orange jumpsuit in the passenger seat.   I loved it!

Nixon and either of the Clintons are good targets.   Whoever is currently in the White House is almost always fair game.   Whoever we are currently (or likely to be) at war with is usually a safe bet.   Listen to some songs from the Capitol Steps http://capsteps.com/ for more ideas.

I was disappointed at how much heat the Cajun Jihad team got. I thought they were great, but it turns out the many Lemons fans have deep prejudices that can't be easily overcome. That music still haunts me.

Ok, I might be overreacting a bit here, but I thought this theme from CMP was a bit out of line.

i agree that highly racist, prejudice against religion(s), and overtly sexual themes need to be left on the table. you could probably get away with a PG-13 variant of Ron Jeremy or "Debbie Does" stuff but stay the hell away from nazi germany and KKK themes.

What is it is against religion, but not prejudiced? Besides, "religion" is a broad brush. I'd love to see a Flying Spaghetti Monster theme and I think a beer volcano and stripper factory (FSM's version of heaven) would be welcomed in the paddock, after the track is cold. An Invisible Pink Unicorn theme would be nice, too. (How do you know it is pink if it is invisible? Faith!) Scientology is always available for a good roasting. Or what about that Christian sect that believed the Earth was hollow and we we living on the inside, or that other one that forbade sex and after the then current members died off there was no one left and the religion vanished. Haley's comet and Nike sneakers rings a religious bell. And of course current main stream religions, like politicians, are fair game. Just be funny, maybe critical, but not ugly. Poor taste would probably be OK if the theme has some redeeming qualities.

Or how about a Westboro Baptist Church theme? Depending on how it is done, you could get booted, even shot.

A serial killer them could be done well, or badly, and perhaps get rethemed.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell? I guess it depends on which track you are at.

Re: Themes that should NEVER be done?

I think the Ted Kennedy theme is pure genius!!!
