Topic: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

PICTURES UPDATED

- we have no affiliation with S&W, were just your average idiots entering Lemons.

Hi, so this is our first Lemons build and my first cage install.  We got the Lemons cage in DOM from S & W race cars and i thought some people might want to see what the Lemons kit looks like.  The bends are really clean, and at least one end of everything that needed to be was fish mouthed. Everything was perfect, however i might have chosen a different bend for the front down tubes if i was able to. With that said it really is a nice kit to start with. I did buy a tube notcher, but the rest was basic hand tools and a good welder.

Any comments from the Good fellas in charge of Tech would be welcome.

Your harness bar is too low if that seat is mounted properly..

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

Remember to go with your tallest driver in the seat, measure from their shoulder, the belt holes might be located wrong. In that case you might have to relocate the holes. John made me aware of this also.

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

If you haven't finish-welded the a-pillar bars, here's a tip. The closer that you can get those downbars to the a-pillar the better. Then you can go back later and weld a piece of plate to the downbars and to the a-pillar, which will stiffen up the car a good bit. It's how all the big boys do their a-pillar bars in sports car racing.

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

I added pics of the basically done cage.

Harness bar.........

After checking Jon was right and the one on the main hoop is 20 or so.. does this one between the down tubes work?  Look ok? - it is just tacked. could always add one above the one on the main hoop but this looks better to me.

Due to the bend of the a pillar tubes they are as close as i could get them.

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

I'm not sure I'd want to anchor the shoulder belts that far back. Nylon is actually pretty stretchy stuff, and the longer the nylon web, the more it can stretch for a given force. The more the belt stretches, the more likely you'll hit something inside the car.

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

doesn't the main hoop diagonal have to be one-piece?   looks like you made the harness bar one-piece, and split the diagonal.

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

Diagonal can still be 2-piece, but the fabrication has to be that much better to ensure it's a straight run end to end.

I'd want a definite go/no-go on the distance from the upper end of that diagonal to the 'corner' of the hoop (refer second pic in orig. post).

Yes.  But they have been passing split diagonal cages as long as the diagonal is in a straight line - and this one is.

Diagonal is prefered to be 1 piece, but this is an acceptable method. I would have liked to see the diagonal closer to the corner.
As for the harness bar, it is too far from the seat. you are better off cutting it to fit between the main hoop and the diagonal at the bottom of the seat harness hole.

SCCA allows that diagonal to attach as little as 50% of the width and 75% of the height.  That bar looks like it is about 60-75% of the width.

Thanks, i really appreciate everyones input,  the diagonal was moved to the right a little so there would be no helmet interference issues, the engineer at S & W suggested it.  moving the harness bar back to the main hoop is definitely a possibility, its simply pressure fit right now. I'll put it wherever Jon or the tech guys tell me too! smile

I thought i had seen harnesses mounted like that in wrc rally cars, which i assumed were fia spec which i assumed would fly

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

The SW cage diagonal in our car is one continuous piece. I think you may have gotten some of your bars mixed up, which is why you're having problems. It was a little confusing when we unwrapped ours, as none of the tubing is labled.

Can you lower your seat brackets enough to make it work?

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

I also suggest cutting out the rearmounted harness bar, then cut that piece down so it just fits within the main hoop, and mount it 1-2" above the current cross bar.  (make sure you allow enough space to get a full weld around the new tube).

Then you will have an "adjustable" shoulder harness mounting height.  Wrap it on the bottom bar for a short driver in a short seat, wrap on the top bar for a tall driver in a higher mounted seat.

Now thats an engine swap!

The diagonal, and the harness bar were both one piece from s & w, but the harness bar was precut and fishmouthed already to fit in the main hoop.  I cut the diagonal, fishmouthed it and welded it in as seen.

The seat ain't moving down.

Our main horizontal bar was too low as designed so we just welded in a separate harness bar higher to make the attachment for the shoulder belt angle correct.

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

The bar between the rear stays is too far back.       You need to raise your harness bar and attach there.

A one piece diagonal is preferred, but not required.   What is required is a straight diagonal, if it is offset though the harness bar you are opening yourself up to failing tech.

Those super long harness attachments are old-tech and are not (or should not be) used any more,  those belts will stop you after you go through the windshield.

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

Thanks John, Just to be clear is mounting a short piece of tube between the main hoop and the diagonal above the portion that is to low (like team magnum pu)  acceptable?

yes it is. it only has to go from main tube to diagonal. it doesn't have to span the entire main hoop.

Re: S & W Race cars Lemons cage install.

After changing seat mounts, it was easier to just put in a bar higher and leave the old one in too.  This way, if we go back to the lower seat mount, we'll be covered.
