why don't we have a Lemons carnage thread... I mean with the relative ease that we break stuff someone should be keeping track of trashed parts.

Ill start!

Re: Everybody Love Carnage.....

Though I don't have pictures yet, out transmission from T-hil 08 which had only 1.5 gears left has a cracked/raised case above the pinon section.

We lost all tranny fluid on that Saturday-- fixed the problem, but the damage was done.  I was able to drive ~ 10 laps on Sunday with only 2nd/5th gear--- then Fecond (first & second) showed up to play-- a different ratio unlike 1st or 2nd, a tag below 3rd ratio wise, but located in the area between 1st and 2nd-- thus Fecond.

It sounded like I was throwing silverwear, nuts/bolts into a garbaged disposal!

I believe that thing should be bronzed and sitting on the mantle, no matter what the wifey has to say about it.  That is quite a feat that you have accomplished.

Re: Everybody Love Carnage.....

That's a nice clean break...

Love the piston rods... almost as good as my buddies ProStreet that ate it's self.

The No budget racing pinion gear should be made into the carnage trophy. That thing looks great and has a torch style to it.

Re: Everybody Love Carnage.....

We sent the twisted rod to Lemons HQ so hopefully someone will be seeing it soon in a trophy lol

Re: Everybody Love Carnage.....

You want to see carnage? Wait until you see what happens to brake hardware at Buttonwillow! Hey, maybe Car-Freshner can make a That Burning Brake Smell air freshener!

Re: Everybody Love Carnage.....

I don't have any cool pics but I can make a list of stuff we've killed.

We seized our motor in practice two weeks before the second race due to incorrect bearing installation.  Working on the car late at night may lead to some boo boos.  We replaced the 1 sieved rod bearing, replaced the crank with one from a free motor I got and swapped the rod and piston.  We saved the motor for like $50-60.

Our most common issue we have had has been clutches!  Our first clutch died as the lining material left the disc in chunks.  It was off our parts car and came as no surprise when it died.  The second clutch on the other hand was unexpected and looked like cat hair in the pressure plate.  It died after the transmission got screwed.

We bent the roll pins on our 4 speed causing us to lose 4th gear in race #2.  In race #3 something happened to the 5 speed and it vibrates the car, don't know what happened yet just that the vibration is from the transmission.

Our battery hold down somehow grounded the battery.  This smoked the positive battery cable and caused the battery to melt around the hold down.  Miraculously, the battery and alternator lived through the whole thing.

We've had miscellaneous issues but nothing as cool as adding air cooling to a water cooled VW motor.

Re: Everybody Love Carnage.....

Troy, don't you know that you are supposed to reverse the battery orientation in a Z?  For some unknown reason, Nissan thought it was a good idea to position the positive battery terminal on the outboard side in very close proximity to the fender.  The negative terminal, on the other hand, is in wide open space where it can't touch anything.

Simply find a battery with the poles reversed and wire the leads so they reach.  Most Z cars have chunks of the fender support missing where the battery has tried to weld itself to the car.

Re: Everybody Love Carnage.....

Our first Lemons (or race, for that matter) is just a few days away so haven't had any breakdowns quite yet, but plenty of carnage while building:

Right thumb (lost part of nail early on and as it was growing out, hit the end with a 4-1/2" cutoff wheel right down the top of the digit!

Well, I guess we have s-o-m-e carnage, but it's the piston that was in the motor we're using (and went back in!)

Re: Everybody Love Carnage.....

Spank, when you button up the bottom end, DO NOT re-use the tin rod-bolt locking tabs....either get new ones or Loctite them....and check the crank oil galleries...I've seen some A-Series where they barely line up at both rods and mains. I used to chamfer the holes slightly with a Dremel tool.....good luck out there...it would be great to see a Mini go the distance
