Topic: This time FX16 + MR2

This weekend a friend gave me a horrible, rusty, leaky, automatic, 86 MR2. Bender and I had this conversation that started on the topic of fixing and selling the MR2 as quickly as possible, but in just minutes, somehow devolved into a mad decision to build another twin engine racer. The plan this time is to stuff the rear end and center tunnel of the MR2 under the whole skin of the FX16.

We are targeting the March 2013 24 Hours Of Lemons at Sear Point to be race ready.

Re: This time FX16 + MR2

Here is the MR2 my buddy "gifted" me:

Re: This time FX16 + MR2

Of the three FX's at my house, my current daily has the worst body. So it will be the primary donor:

I know someone's going to call cheater on this car, but I looked up the transaction and I paid $160 for it. The engine I received with it will go back in it for racing. Right now it does have a nicish small port I paid $500 for, but I'm yanking it for my new daily. Otherwise the only upgrade this car has had is some Rustoleum. This is what it looked like when I bought it:

I'm excited that this car is registered through April so we can road test it, maybe even drive it to the race.

Re: This time FX16 + MR2

Stupid but fair question: why? What improvement does the planned new chassis have over the old one?

Also, I've still got that silvertop that Paul and I talked about if you guys want it for this project. smile Flipped transmission, lots of spares included. Just need to figure out a convenient way to get it all up to you guys.

I believe the plan is to run both.

Re: This time FX16 + MR2

Yeah, both cars are to run, pretty much because race car. Some one gave us a rusted out unregistered MR2, and there are two too many hatchbacks in my yard, and Bender and I heard the same psychotic voices in our heads. I have far more reasons NOT to, but here we are.

I don't think there will be any advantage other than application and refinement of what we have learned the hard way with the MRolla. I think weight/balance differences will be negligible. We'll preserve the FX wheelbase, which I speculate is an inch or two shorter than the MRolla. Cage clearances may be a bit more generous. The profile will be higher. The MRolla's handling would be a challenge to improve on. It really is an incredible car.

We'll take a different construction approach, inserting a cut-away MR2 rear and center tunnel into a hatchback body, as opposed to just splicing two cars, but the key geometry will be the same. The key construction point of the MRolla was mating the MR2 center tunnel to the Corolla's firewall, and the rest of the structure followed. With the new project we will match the FX16 wheel base, but coincidentally it looks like that will put the MR2 center tunnel right against front firewall again, same as the MRolla. We'll know more when we start cutting.

Re: This time FX16 + MR2

Stripping the MR2 commences today, but we need to do some engine work before we really cut into it. We got it running and I drove it to Bender's shop. Dog slow. Feels like a notch off on the timing belt.

hang four bikes off the back end and connect the pedals to the drive axles via a bunch of reduction. it can be a penalty powered judge mobile.

Chopping the car is fun and easy. Keeping the wiring intact is more detailed.

Re: This time FX16 + MR2

Earlier this week Jay gave us value approval.

We ran our construction plan past Evil John (would have been smart to do so before we started cutting). He warned our welding will be strictly scrutinized, and our OEM fuel tank and filler must not be altered, but gave us the go-ahead to proceed. Based on our previous cars, he did not expect any problem at safety inspection.

This weekend we got the rest of the dash and climate accessories out and moved seriously into fitment phase.  Another day and we should have them tacked together. Looks like things are aligning as expected.

Re: This time FX16 + MR2

I wear my MRolla T-shirt pretty regularly. I get a lot of questions about it. When I explain the "double the suck" part, I get that "You crazy!" look, even though I had nothing to do with building that monstrosity.

Re: This time FX16 + MR2

Progress today. We spend most of the day fitting and cleaning the weld surfaces. It's tacked together sitting on its wheels tonight, ready for welding to begin.
