Maybe someone here can explain this, but it seems like every MIT grad I've ever met proudly claims to have memorized pi to X (useless) places.
I've never experienced this with scientists or engineers from anywhere else. Is there some kind of depraved brainwashing that happens during freshman orientation? Are there any Lemons racers willing to admit they attended and explain this bizarre obsession to me?
I graduated from RPI, and I can honestly say that the following is completely from memory:
3.14159265358979323846264338
That's as far as I know it. Maybe it was from attending a school in roughly the same geographic location as MIT.

WPI nerd myself. 3.14159 is all i cared to ever memorize, never used more than 3.14 in my work.
In some places, irrational numbers are against the law. Take note, π= 3.2

"My PI is bigger than yours." That's about it. Also 355/113 is a better approximation. Also 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399 is all I could ever remember. I have a math degree, but not from a school anyone's heard of.
