Re: Follow the adventure

I think I've already mentioned this, but yeah, we gave the car to the right guy.

I'm happy to hear that because part of me thinks that perhaps this isnt wierd enough or over the top enough.

I think I hang out with the GRM crowd too much, nothing seems weird anymore.  Heck Bryce over there build his own damn hybrid fiero for $2000.  A FUNCTIONAL HYBRID for $2k!!  Seriously, Detroit is hiring the wrong type of people.

it's not too late to stuff a jaguar V12 in the back with zoomies and one cheap turbo muffler per cylinder!

You seriously overestimate the size of this car, a Jag V12 is bigger smile

nah, I'm just properly estimating the amount of insanity that needs to be injected to make it a proper stand-out amongst your GRM buddys big_smile

Re: Follow the adventure

Maybe Im just tired but it appears another little piece fell into place (almost literally) on the Wartburg build tonite.

One thing bugging me about the Porsche front susupension is it was going to be narrower since we are mounting the a-arms to the Wartburg frame so the factory swaybar was way too wide.

So I've been holding a bunch of parts I picked up for a friend from a local guy and he came to get them tonite.  As we are loading up the parts I spy a swaybar and grab it for some quick eyeball engineering.  It appears to be the right width, thickness and shape to fit perfectly with the stock porsche a-arm mounts when they are in their new spots.   And its a lovely obscure piece so it was pure chance we found it.  My buddy let me keep it since I picked up all the parts for him and stored them for a month.

So we can now add Triumph Herald as one of the donors to this project.   Go figger.

You should get the United Nations to sponsor you. Maybe paint all your driver's helmets that pale blue color that UN peacekeepers wear... smile

LOL...great idea!  Now it's starting to make it more of a quest to get different parts used from different countries, but Im trying to make it purposeful, not just tossing parts on for the heck of it.

Re: Follow the adventure

Big MTR work weekend coming up.  Hoping to get the body off the frame and mock up the front suspension.
Since I had the day off I decided to get a head start on things and lighten the load a bit.

Will do, should finally be some big visual progress this weekend.  If there was a way to post pictures of all the designs I would but they are all stuck in my head right now.   Currently working on trying to design a steering setup for it, this is a sticking point right now.  I have some general ideas but I'm hoping for an epiphany.  The angle on the steering column is crap because the stock R&P was mounted high in the body.  The new steering (most likely still R&P) will be mounted lower and much further forward so I'll have to rework the column.

Dont mind me....just thinking outloud smile

Re: Follow the adventure

Long work day so alot of updates for everyone.

Started my morning by building a quick body dolly.
http://wartburg.misfittoysracing.com/images/bodydolly.jpg

Then Chris and Jim W came by and we finished removing all removable body panels.  The hood, trunk and rear fenders were removed to finish lightening the load. The body mount bolts were broken off and we rolled her outside.  Chris came up with the good idea to put the rear of the body on the lift and then using a board for leverage he lifted the front of the body while Jim and I put some jack stands under it.  We then rolled the chassis out from under her and rolled the body dolly under the body.  Tarped it all up and rolled it out for later.

The chassis was brought back in and stripped of all the suspension components so now we just have a bare frame to start working with.

One of these things is not like the other. Seems the eye of the rear leaf spring on the passenger side has returned to the earth. Thankfully we wont be reusing this part.

Then back outside (in the snow) for a little clean up

We ended the day with a little work on the front suspension mock up.  Needed a little forward progress after all the tear down. Yes ladies and gentlemen, that is a porsche 944 suspension bolted into a Wartburg. Kinda looks like it was meant to be there.

Re: Follow the adventure

Man, the level of these projects keeps going up! I'm jealous of this one.... That car has pretty nice sheet metal. One of these days I'll do something crafty, but drive is already full..

"Don't mess with Lexas!" LS400. We survived another one! See website link for build details.
